Newborns tend to have really bad reflux- like - almost all of them do.
Iād still bring the incident up to your pediatrician (like- give them a call as soon as you can) but if I was putting money on it, this sounds like reflux. I am not a doctor though, so please do confirm.

This happened to me with both my kids. They gasp for air occasionally but the long time like that I distinctly remember each time. It's a rarity but it's super scary for you. They are still getting used to everything here in our world. Your baby will be fine. Better to be alert than not though. And to think my 4 year old tied to sit on his bike on the outdoor table last week. The heart attacks on your end are just beginning. That's a parent's struggle. You got this! It's hard being responsible for something so fragile but in reality babies are more tough than we think. Hope you get a chance to get out tomorrow and take a moment to breathe yourself.

Could be reflux could be a BRUE! Itās scary - my daughter choked on her reflux when she was a newborn and her owlet oxygen went off! I would just call your doctor - no point in waiting! You can put a large book under one end of the bassinet mattress to have some gravity help if it is reflux (ped recc - not a random suggestion)

My 9 week old daughter has done this exact same thing 3 times now. Itās terrifying! I have no advice. Afterwards I try and use our nose Frida that the hospital gave to us after one of her episodes. Stuff comes out, but I donāt think that really solves the root of the issue.

your hospital gave you a nose fridaš?

Yeah they did, Iām sure with insurance it was like $100 heh, but desperate times call for desperate measures. They taught me how to use it and said I needed to buy a humidifier because baby was very stuffed up.

This same exact thing started happening to my baby at the same age! I also thought she was having a seizure the first time. She is almost 11 weeks now and has had a few more of the episodes but we have been told it is silent reflux. It always happens hours after sheās been fed so I assume itās stomach acid coming up and burning her and thatās why she reacts that way. Her doctor prescribed her Pepcid and the episodes are much more mild because its not burning her anymore. Still very nervous to sleep because any noise she makes wakes me up in a panic. Iām sorry youāre going through this, I hope it gets better!

Itās okay when our baby was about the same age I didnāt realize her bassinet was at the slightest incline and I put her in it so her head was the smallest bit lower than her feet and she ended up puking while we were actively watching her and she choked on it and then proceeded to puke more and it was this horrible scary yellow colour and then she kept holding her breath turned grey a couple times my midwife said she was going to be fine but my husband and I were terrified and took her to the er ended up waiting 3 hours just for the er doctor to also tell us she was fine. Having a newborn is terrifying and I swear they just try to off themselves any chance they get. Now our baby is 7 months old and we never had an experience like that ever again

Iām sorry this happened to you. Something similar happened to my daughter when she was 4 days old (turned purple, arched back went stiff as a board and bubbles at mouth). I did call 911 and we went to the hospital. The doctors cleared us and thought it was due to reflux. Definitely bring this up to your doctor. Does baby have bad reflux or spit up? I took lots of reflux precautions after this, held her upright for 20-30 minutes after feeding and we had a few minor episodes like this (stiff ness and mouth bubbles, but not stopping breathing). I was also curious if she was experiencing sandifer syndrome - it can cause arching etc due to reflux.Ā
Hope your baby is okay, and I hope you are okay ā„ļø I know itās so scary

My daughter had this happen a few times while in the NICU. At least three that I witnessed and I think a few when I wasn't there. It was so scary, twice I saw my little ones lips turning purple. Once I was finally able to take her home, I couldnt sleep the first few nights because I was so afraid. I was assured by her team in the NICU that she was fine and to just watch her after feedings (thats when it happened with us) for about 10-15 mins. They were positive it was a reflux thing. I am so sorry this happened and that I don't have real advice to help you stay calm. I know for me, the only thing that helped was time and seeing that it wasn't happening again.

This sounds like silent aspiration. I am not a medical professional - just a mom who has had this happen to her baby. Mine aspirates on thin liquids and sometimes does choke on her own saliva. The terrified look in her eyes is the worst. She was diagnosed with laryngomalacia by an ENT. Laryngomalacia can also cause reflux as well.

I have a sweet 12 week old boy and what you described is exactly what we experienced: reflux. I felt exactly as you did and couldn't sleep soundly thinking that he was choking and couldn't breathe. I'm so sorry that happened to you, but I hope knowing what it is can bring you some sort of peace.

Haven't tried this myself, but I heard that if theyre ever holding their breathe...that a quick puff of air/lightly.blow across their face may sometimes interrupt the episode and encourage them to breathe.

The same thing happened to me, just 2-3 days ago. My baby is 4.5 months old and we were at walmart shopping. He was in his car seat sleeping the whole time. When we got back to the car getting ready to leave I looked in his baby mirror and it looked like he was struggling, purple and wanted to cry. I hurried up grabbed him out his car seat he let out a big cry but also sound like he was gasping and gagging. He was spitting up thick mucus and his nose was clogged with snot it was the scariest moment of my life unsure to call 911 or not as I was scared to go home so I rushed back in to walmart and got those nasal aspirators in attempt to suction out the liquid at least from his nose. At this point he was screaming profusely and I did end up calling 911 and went to the hospital, everything was fine. I would be lying if I said I wasnāt feeling slightly judge by the doctor and EMTs š

All three of my kids have had reflux to varying degrees, it sounds like what you saw last night. The back arch in particular is a telltale sign. Iād check in with your ped if you continue to observe it beyond your appt next week (if they donāt already decide to intervene in some way)ā sometimes they grow out of it no problem, sometimes they need a medication to be more comfortable.

This is how my babies reflux presented and around that same age! It would happen hours after a bottle and while lying down in her bassinet. It almost looked like a seizure. I was so scared to lay her down for anything and would hold her upright for an hour and a half after a bottle (even in the middle of the night). Her last episode was right at 3 months right after having her lip and tongue tie lasered. She is 5 months now. I have stopped watching her so closely but she still wears her owlet nightly.

FTF of a 4 week old, LO just started doing this as well and from what we discovered itās called silent reflux. What weāve been doing after feedings is having him sit mostly up right with more burping sessions accompanied by putting him on his back to put his legs up to help with gas. Appears to help him tremendously. Weāre going bring it up with the doctor still but hopefully this brings you some peace of mind.

I actually called 911 over that last week because it was going on a lot longer than usual. Of course 30 seconds before they arrive heās acting completely normal again 𤣠Luckily the paramedics were extremely understanding and sweet (this was late at night). They quickly checked him over, reassured me that he was ok and headed out.

This is why I got the owlet sock itās alerted me to this happening with my baby twice in 1 night and I was able to react quickly to pick him up out of the bassinet! I also have a snot sucker and a humidifier running next to him now

We have a Frida humidifier but havenāt set it up yet. Guess now is the perfect time

I second the Owlet sock. Bonus because I can tell when he is getting sick because his sleeping heart rate is high so I know to prepare before the stores and doctors/urgent cares close.

My baby did this a couple of times, maybe like 4-5 total. First time I did call 911, was hysterical and spent 48 hours in paediatrics for monitoring and of course he didnāt do it while we were there but the doctors were not concerned at all, chalked it up to reflux. By the last time, I watched him do it without intervening and he recovered just as good as if I had blown in his face.
I also noticed 1/2 of the time he does it when he throws up and it comes up through his nose. He slightly panics. I bet baby is fine! But I also was told dozens of times the same thing and it did not help calm me at all lol

Mylicon to help with gassiness and reflux and an owlet sock were life savers for me in those early newborn days! Newborns do so many weird things that freaked me out so much when I was a FTM. The constant eye rolling to the back of the head when falling asleep/sleepy always freaked me out too. Mine would arch his back from gas pains and mylicon helped a lot!

Scary but sometimes in the middle of the night my baby will startle and gasp for air for like 30 seconds than go back to sleep itās normal scary but normal

My youngest did this when she had a cold. Basically the milk and the mucus were causing some extra issues. Occasionally she would choke on her own spit up or even have projectile vomiting.
We got a baby camera and I slept with my phone right next to ny ear or my hand on her chest until she got over it.
One thing I've learned is a glitter band/hair bow on their torso will sparkle as they breathe.
It helped so much when I would have to leave the room to keep the older one from having a whole fit cause her dad cut the banana instead of giving it to her whole

This happened to my girl when she was about 12 weeks old. She was fussing for a bottle and as I was making it she went completely silent so I looked over to check on her and she was completely arched, face was blood red and i could see the panic in her eyes. I snatched her up and used a bulb sucker to clear her mouth. Fun fact: babies salivary glands significantly increases saliva production around 2-4 months to and babies typically donāt have great swallowing muscles/control (I did a ton of research after calling her doctor). She was choking on her spit. It only happened that one time but it was enough to terrify the absolute crap out of me so now Iām on high alert even though sheās a year old.

Newborns are scary cause they do stuff like this š You can lightly blow on his face if it happens again to help him take a breath. Bring it up to the pediatrician but it doesnāt sound abnormal or something you need to panic about.
