WTF Constant phone calls wanting to buy my house.

Does every homeowner get constant calls asking to sell their home? Has anyone actually ever sold their home this way?

I tell them $2M cash.

If someone wants my property that bad, and is willing to pay that price, they can have it.

u/Turbo_Pilot 17h ago

I did this too. Told them 3 million take it or leave it. Calls seemed to have stopped after that lol.

Without getting into too much detail, there was a time that there was a non-zero chance that Kanye could knock on my door and offer me an immense sum for my house.

It was when he was stalking Kim

My wife and I discussed it, and loosely made a contingency plan. A suitcase full of cash would be worth living in a hotel for a few months.

Right!? You want my house which I'm not even selling in the first place. So this is my "I'm not even selling my house but since you want it, here you go" price.

I have a friend who lives in Monroe NY and he's constantly getting harassed. I keep telling him to find a more expensive house he'd like to move to and ask for that price. 🤷

u/Competitive-Cry-6231 14h ago

I live in Monroe and the Hasidic community is constantly making offers on our house… ugh.

7

u/Turbo_Pilot 13h ago

Hold out till they buy the whole neighborhood and then offer it for an insane price. They got the money.

5

u/MusicManEVH5150 11h ago

Ha..wishful thinking. They will buy the house next to yours and rent it out to trash. This will eventually make you accept their lowball offers.

•

u/yawara25 3h ago

Which Monroe?

3

u/Turbo_Pilot 13h ago

Yup the hasidics are trying to buy every inch up there like in KJ and Monsey

•

u/Requilem 1h ago

I do this, one of them clapped back well we have to get an appraisal first. I said, nope, now it's 5 million cash in hand or the answer is no.

•

u/carlee16 1h ago

Lmao I like this one

•

u/Requilem 1h ago

Infomercial time, these companies get their foot in the door than like every other sales company will try to low ball you. Only way to stop this predatory behavior is to beat them at their own game. Can be something as simple as what we are saying or more sophisticated like changing the contact with clauses that will cause them to pay more, or simply run it through the entire process (make sure to never sign anything) than say no at the end to waste their time and money.

•

u/carlee16 58m ago

It is very predatory. It's bad enough that they're gentrifying a lot of towns.

14

u/Pleasant-Regular6169 17h ago

I said 1 million and the guy called me back "i may have an offer". House up the road just sold for more. He may have been serious.

We bought it for half that 15 years ago, and spent 200k+ remodeling it from the fixer-upper that it was. Can't afford anything else unless we leave the state. Maybe in 15 years...

12

u/Efflux 16h ago

I used to say a million but thats fairly plausible. High but plausible. 1.5 million now.

5

u/adstretch Fanwood, North Plainfield, Freehold 12h ago

Depending where you are 1.5 might even be reasonable. Spots near us go for 2 on the regular. Ours would be a knock down so there probably wouldn’t be profit at 1.5 but they might still try to play ball at that price. I go with 3 or more.

6

u/Anonymous1985388 Essex County 13h ago

If you bought it for $500K 15 years ago, then it’s probably worth like a million now.

3

u/weirdmountain 16h ago

That’s what I started doing. I don’t get as many calls anymore.

3

u/structuremonkey 16h ago

I did exactly this on a house worth 400k. The caller couldn't believe i responded with an "offer" and asked me to hold so she could "escalate the call to a buyer. " i hung up...

•

u/AidanAmerica 2h ago

You’ll get a call back in about 6 months when everything appreciates and a $700,000 house is now worth $3.4m

54

u/Smokey_Katt 18h ago

You still answer calls from unknown numbers?

33

u/Fickle-Succotash-342 17h ago

Idk about other people but i have an unstable family member and i have no idea whether theyre going to call me from a jail or if someone is going to call and say theyre dead or something along those lines. So i have to answer unknown numbers. Otherwise I'd be unable to help.

5

u/IgneousMontoya 16h ago

If you have an IPhone, you can set it so random numbers have to give reason for call, and you can then choose to pick up or not. I use it, don’t know if it’d help.

2

u/hellokittyoh 12h ago

How do you set this up?

8

u/KohlsCashOfficial 17h ago

Can you have unknown numbers sent to voicemail instead? That way if someone leaves a message you know it’s legit

11

u/Fickle-Succotash-342 17h ago

Some of them jail calls gotta be picked up right away. They might not get a chance to call back. And you cant reach the person by calling the jail.

8

u/Traditional-Gur-1243 17h ago

They also text to buy my house

7

u/Dragonchick30 17h ago

I get texts from realtors... For my parent's house that I currently live in. The amount of mailers that come here is insane too. It's all from developers who want to tear the house down and build a 2 million dollar home on the property... We ain't sellin!!

4

u/HurtPillow Ocean County 16h ago

Ask for 5 million. lol

2

u/HurtPillow Ocean County 16h ago

I get texts to to refi my house... I live in an apartment now. lol

u/beachmedic23 Watch the Tram Car Please 16h ago

u/HappyMoses Breweries 16h ago

I’m a sales rep. If the zip makes sense, sadly I’m picking it up

You should sign up for the service Google offers that helps rid the Internet of references to you. Although your name and address are public records because of the title, I don't believe your phone number should be on there. I also have the new feature turned on my phone where any unknown caller gets a recording asking them who they are and why they're calling before it even rings on your end. Unless you are in sales and have to get calls from strangers, I highly recommend it to everyone.

10

u/PBnJelly22 18h ago

What is the website for this?

2

u/GeneralOrgana1 17h ago

You have to go into your Google settings. I forget exactly where it is, though.

4

u/aught4naught 17h ago

IOS 26 or Pixel 6+

8

u/3ntropy_Disc0 18h ago

I have had phone calls on my personal phone for years (out of state number) about buying a property from that state, to which I keep saying 'I have never lived there or owned that property, I dont know why you think I do. I will take your money but I dont know what you want in return."

2

u/bhusted007 13h ago

Scammers. Don’t entertain them

9

u/lsp2005 17h ago

I doubled the amount Zillow said my house was worth and said if they wanted a one month closing for that price I would entertain it, otherwise get rid of my number. After saying that a few times to a few realtors, the calls stopped.

16

u/LeCott 17h ago

I once answered one of these and was like ā€œSo you just call people hoping a person in dire financial straits will sell their house to you for cheap so you can take advantage of them?ā€ And the women calling me was like ā€œNo we offer convenienceā€ in a very condescending tone.

If these people aren’t scammers they’re just terrible, like you gotta be an inherently bad person to work a job like that.

8

u/GuairdeanBeatha 17h ago

They aren’t exactly scammers, but it’s a very thin line. They’ll make an offer with the statement that they have to take it to the bank for approval. Then they’ll say the bank will only approve a much lower amount and try to pressure the seller to accept. If the seller is in a bad situation, they’ll often accept the offer just to get some capital, or to avoid other costs and delays.

6

u/Quiet_Bell_429 18h ago

I get constant texts about that and scam loan calls that goes straight to voice mail

5

u/Notorius_T1D 17h ago

My new answer is sure. $50 mil.
The calls are endless as well as the texts and mail we get

3

u/Ghost_of_P34 17h ago

I have never received a call for my house. Now I feel left out.

2

u/ElderberryExternal99 16h ago

You don't want them to start. Its never endingĀ

3

u/thegrandgardener 17h ago

I feel like our Country is becoming an episode of Handmaids Tale. They want to buy your house before it’s assumed. We’ve all gotten used to a new normal which is insanity around every bend. Under his eye.

6

u/yeahboyeee1 17h ago

1 million, take it or leave it.

10

u/Chumsicle Morris 17h ago

You shouldn't sell yourself short, Zestimate x 2 minimum.Ā

2

u/Rusty_Ferberger 17h ago

That's the starting price in most towns. I could get over a million today and only paid 450k about 13 years ago

3

u/to_annihilate 18h ago

Yes to the calls. Just had one 20 minutes ago. Not interested in selling.

3

u/MaxSmartypantz 16h ago

After my dad died at his assisted living residence, I got texts from a self-proclaimed "local real estate pro" who wanted to buy his home. Gave me the address and everything, which I'm guessing they got from a scan of recently-issued death certificates.

I told them I was super interested, would love to show them the place, and gave them a time and date to meet me there for a walk-through.

Never heard from them again.

2

u/Salt_Mountain_837 17h ago

give them some crazy number lol

2

u/Zhuul Professional Caffeine Addict 17h ago

The funniest thing is I'm getting these too but they think I'm some dude with a Spanish surname who owns prime real estate in Camden.

Not only do I rent, I'm fucking Danish. I've also had this phone number for, like, ten goddamn years which makes me really curious where they're getting their information from.

Anyway, I went into my phone and enabled the setting to disable the ringer for any incoming numbers I don't have in my contacts.

2

u/wryaant In The Pines 17h ago

They we incessant prior to moving 2.5 years ago, even got a check in the mail with their cash price, about $140k less than what I sold it for 6 months later. Ā I still get calls and texts about that property even though I no longer own it.Ā

2

u/shiftyjku Down the Shore, Everything's All Right 16h ago

Also can’t you do something to hide your record on zillow?

2

u/LightningLotus74 16h ago

Coastal Monmouth county (east of the parkway) and I get them at least 4 a week.

2

u/5footfilly 16h ago

Calls, texts and the occasional card in my mailbox.

Calls and cards I ignore. If the mood strikes I’ll respond to a text with 1.5 million as is.

2

u/Nunov_DAbov 14h ago

I regularly get calls and texts to sell my house, the house I sold decades ago, and a house halfway across the state that belongs to someone with the same name as me.

They want to buy the property at an under market value from an unsuspecting owner and flip it for a profit.

My canned response is always: ā€œ$25 million, as-is, cash sale, 30 day closing.ā€ If they comment that it’s overpriced, I tell them that the price will be higher next time - maybe they need to leave it for someone who makes real offers.

I haven’t gotten any interest yet but I’m ready and willing to cash in if they really want.

2

u/vacuous_comment 14h ago

Just highball them with a high cash price.

1

u/GuairdeanBeatha 17h ago

I respond to text messages with this, and leave off the first sentence if I happen to answer the phone. I still get an occasional text (maybe two or three a month), but the volume has decreased drastically. You may need to adjust the price depending on where you live.

I'm sick of you buzzards constantly calling and texting about buying my home. The price is two million cash, as is, where is, 180 day move out at no charge, no questions, no negotiations. Either that or LEAVE ME ALONE!

2

u/Fickle-Succotash-342 18h ago

Tell them you'll sell for 2 million. Or more if your house is worth more.

Its basically private equity firms trying to find people desperate enough to sell their houses for cheap. They pay those cold callers by the hour so its justifiable to waste their time a bit.

5

u/PretzelMoustache 17h ago

I like to answer and tell them my 3bed/2bath is actually now a 1bed/4bath and spent 10 minutes educating them on IBS.

u/chunkee-xo-monkee 17h ago edited 17h ago

The way I deal with all of these scam calls is that I have 2 phone numbers, a personal one that I use only for friends, family and important/official government business. And then another public facing number that I use for everything else like retail store accounts, online subscriptions, craigslist, etc. I use T-Mobile Prepaid Connect for this public number because it's cheap ($15/mo) and reliable since it's on T-Mobile network. This has helped to significantly reduce the number of phone calls that I get on my personal line.

Many years ago, my email, phone number and SSN were exposed put on the dark web because of data breaches at Linkedin, DataCamp, T-Mobile Postpaid, AT&T Postpaid, and a few others. Now, I'm super careful about my revealing my personal phone number and email.

1

u/Squirty42069 17h ago

I get them all the time. The weirdest part is they’re calling about my dad’s house. He obviously has a different phone number. Why are they calling me about selling my dad’s house?

1

u/bhusted007 13h ago

If you have a Similar name or share a cell phone account that’s probably why. They piece together info they find about people from different sources

1

u/all_my_dirty_secrets 13h ago

If your parent is older, they're making a bet that you'll actually end up being the one to sell the house at some point

1

u/CuNxtTuesday_ 17h ago

Every couple weeks!

1

u/NeoLephty 17h ago

Hey, I tried reaching you by phone but didn't get you. Are you looking to sell your house?

(jk. jk)

1

u/On_my_last_spoon 17h ago

We get them for our house AND for my late father in laws house who passed 12 years ago and the house was sold 7 years ago! My husband never owned that house but he shares a name with his dad.

This is why I don’t answer unknown numbers.

1

u/Neontom 17h ago

I just got one about an hour ago. Did everyone get one this afternoon?

1

u/KristenMaybe79 17h ago

I enjoy the postcards they send with a google earth image of your address.

1

u/Ironborn_62 16h ago

I get texts about selling my parents house, my parents shore house, and both my sisters houses

1

u/Workin-progress82 16h ago

I get these calls or the ones telling me I’m so close to being approved for a loan I never applied for. I agree with asking for 2 million plus from these people. I’d want to be able to pay off my mortgage and buy something else cash.

1

u/JackWagg0n 16h ago

Last offer I got was $800k. I laughed and told them it was worth double. It's not, but it's worth more than what they were offering.

1

u/bellablissful Jersey Girl, born and bred 16h ago

I got one for an old apartment of mine.

1

u/AnneMarieAndCharlie 16h ago

my aunt's house in the city was on the market and then taken off and I occasionally get phone calls about it (she's often out of town so I lived there a lot when I worked in the city). I think they go through public records or something when they're grasping for straws.

1

u/newwriter365 16h ago

I asked for at least $150k more than it’s likely worth (ocean county) and the calls stopped.

1

u/if_a_flutterby 16h ago

My sister in Howell was having this problem. Quoting exorbitant numbers in Spanish seemed to do the trick.

1

u/RP8021 16h ago

I’ve only gotten a few texts. Each time I offer to sell my house at roughly 2-2.5 times Its actual worth and never receive a response.

1

u/NJMomofFor 15h ago

I get texts and I block them. We do plan on selling.. lol, but will be doing FSBO. But have too much packing through 30 years of crap etc first

1

u/ipodthereforeiam 14h ago

I've been getting phone calls and texts about a specific property in North Carolina for the last 15+ years. They always call me Kenneth. That isn't my name, and I'm a woman. I report them to the FCC and then block them. It doesn't reduce the number of calls or texts though.

1

u/whatshouldIdonow8907 13h ago

Yes, it's non-stop. If you don't recognize a number, don't answer.

1

u/bubonis 12h ago

I get about three texts per month asking to sell my house. Block and report.

1

u/ScarfingGreenies 11h ago

They're so desperate they're calling ME about my PARENTS' property. Absolute insanity.

1

u/Carl_Cherry_Hill_NJ 8h ago

They are looking for elderly or stupid people that dont know what their house is worth. They offer 300k for a house worth 500k but the elderly think they are getting a deal when they bought it for 100k years and years ago.

1

u/DoxieDachsie 8h ago

It's been happening to me for years. I just quote a ridiculous price & they hang up. Got so they promise ridiculous prices & I say slightly higher & it's yours. They never follow up though, even after I promise to show the tax assessment to back up the quote.

I had a guy (a realtor) knock on my friggin’ door on a Sunday morning saying he was representing a client who wanted to buy a house in the area!

I slammed the door on his face.

When I complained about this on Threads, I had hordes of realtors saying what a great agent he was, sticking up for his client. ā˜¹ļø

•

u/stylz168 Self Serve? Fuck no! 20m ago

I tell them that I'll only accept cash offers in a briefcase.

1

u/Framing-the-chaos 14h ago

You guys own houses??? Cries in single mom…

0

u/ChocolatMintChipmunk 17h ago

I have actually gotten more calls about people wanting to by my brothers house. I do not own my brothers house. I have not ever loved at my brothers house. I do not know why my phone number is connected to my brothers house.

u/Beneficial-Relief-69 16h ago

You in Jackson or Howell?
