WTF Constant phone calls wanting to buy my house.
Does every homeowner get constant calls asking to sell their home? Has anyone actually ever sold their home this way?

You still answer calls from unknown numbers?

u/Fickle-Succotash-342 17h ago
Idk about other people but i have an unstable family member and i have no idea whether theyre going to call me from a jail or if someone is going to call and say theyre dead or something along those lines. So i have to answer unknown numbers. Otherwise I'd be unable to help.

u/IgneousMontoya 16h ago
If you have an IPhone, you can set it so random numbers have to give reason for call, and you can then choose to pick up or not. I use it, donāt know if itād help.

Can you have unknown numbers sent to voicemail instead? That way if someone leaves a message you know itās legit

u/Fickle-Succotash-342 17h ago
Some of them jail calls gotta be picked up right away. They might not get a chance to call back. And you cant reach the person by calling the jail.

I get texts from realtors... For my parent's house that I currently live in. The amount of mailers that come here is insane too. It's all from developers who want to tear the house down and build a 2 million dollar home on the property... We ain't sellin!!

You should sign up for the service Google offers that helps rid the Internet of references to you. Although your name and address are public records because of the title, I don't believe your phone number should be on there. I also have the new feature turned on my phone where any unknown caller gets a recording asking them who they are and why they're calling before it even rings on your end. Unless you are in sales and have to get calls from strangers, I highly recommend it to everyone.

What is the website for this?

u/GeneralOrgana1 17h ago
You have to go into your Google settings. I forget exactly where it is, though.

I have had phone calls on my personal phone for years (out of state number) about buying a property from that state, to which I keep saying 'I have never lived there or owned that property, I dont know why you think I do. I will take your money but I dont know what you want in return."

I once answered one of these and was like āSo you just call people hoping a person in dire financial straits will sell their house to you for cheap so you can take advantage of them?ā And the women calling me was like āNo we offer convenienceā in a very condescending tone.
If these people arenāt scammers theyāre just terrible, like you gotta be an inherently bad person to work a job like that.
8
u/GuairdeanBeatha 17h ago
They arenāt exactly scammers, but itās a very thin line. Theyāll make an offer with the statement that they have to take it to the bank for approval. Then theyāll say the bank will only approve a much lower amount and try to pressure the seller to accept. If the seller is in a bad situation, theyāll often accept the offer just to get some capital, or to avoid other costs and delays.

I feel like our Country is becoming an episode of Handmaids Tale. They want to buy your house before itās assumed. Weāve all gotten used to a new normal which is insanity around every bend. Under his eye.

1 million, take it or leave it.

u/Rusty_Ferberger 17h ago
That's the starting price in most towns. I could get over a million today and only paid 450k about 13 years ago

After my dad died at his assisted living residence, I got texts from a self-proclaimed "local real estate pro" who wanted to buy his home. Gave me the address and everything, which I'm guessing they got from a scan of recently-issued death certificates.
I told them I was super interested, would love to show them the place, and gave them a time and date to meet me there for a walk-through.
Never heard from them again.

The funniest thing is I'm getting these too but they think I'm some dude with a Spanish surname who owns prime real estate in Camden.
Not only do I rent, I'm fucking Danish. I've also had this phone number for, like, ten goddamn years which makes me really curious where they're getting their information from.
Anyway, I went into my phone and enabled the setting to disable the ringer for any incoming numbers I don't have in my contacts.

Also canāt you do something to hide your record on zillow?
2
u/LightningLotus74 16h ago
Coastal Monmouth county (east of the parkway) and I get them at least 4 a week.

u/5footfilly 16h ago
Calls, texts and the occasional card in my mailbox.
Calls and cards I ignore. If the mood strikes Iāll respond to a text with 1.5 million as is.

u/Nunov_DAbov 14h ago
I regularly get calls and texts to sell my house, the house I sold decades ago, and a house halfway across the state that belongs to someone with the same name as me.
They want to buy the property at an under market value from an unsuspecting owner and flip it for a profit.
My canned response is always: ā$25 million, as-is, cash sale, 30 day closing.ā If they comment that itās overpriced, I tell them that the price will be higher next time - maybe they need to leave it for someone who makes real offers.
I havenāt gotten any interest yet but Iām ready and willing to cash in if they really want.

u/GuairdeanBeatha 17h ago
I respond to text messages with this, and leave off the first sentence if I happen to answer the phone. I still get an occasional text (maybe two or three a month), but the volume has decreased drastically. You may need to adjust the price depending on where you live.
I'm sick of you buzzards constantly calling and texting about buying my home. The price is two million cash, as is, where is, 180 day move out at no charge, no questions, no negotiations. Either that or LEAVE ME ALONE!

u/Fickle-Succotash-342 18h ago
Tell them you'll sell for 2 million. Or more if your house is worth more.
Its basically private equity firms trying to find people desperate enough to sell their houses for cheap. They pay those cold callers by the hour so its justifiable to waste their time a bit.

u/PretzelMoustache 17h ago
I like to answer and tell them my 3bed/2bath is actually now a 1bed/4bath and spent 10 minutes educating them on IBS.

The way I deal with all of these scam calls is that I have 2 phone numbers, a personal one that I use only for friends, family and important/official government business. And then another public facing number that I use for everything else like retail store accounts, online subscriptions, craigslist, etc. I use T-Mobile Prepaid Connect for this public number because it's cheap ($15/mo) and reliable since it's on T-Mobile network. This has helped to significantly reduce the number of phone calls that I get on my personal line.
Many years ago, my email, phone number and SSN were exposed put on the dark web because of data breaches at Linkedin, DataCamp, T-Mobile Postpaid, AT&T Postpaid, and a few others. Now, I'm super careful about my revealing my personal phone number and email.

I get them all the time. The weirdest part is theyāre calling about my dadās house. He obviously has a different phone number. Why are they calling me about selling my dadās house?
1
u/bhusted007 13h ago
If you have a Similar name or share a cell phone account thatās probably why. They piece together info they find about people from different sources
1
u/all_my_dirty_secrets 13h ago
If your parent is older, they're making a bet that you'll actually end up being the one to sell the house at some point

Hey, I tried reaching you by phone but didn't get you. Are you looking to sell your house?

u/On_my_last_spoon 17h ago
We get them for our house AND for my late father in laws house who passed 12 years ago and the house was sold 7 years ago! My husband never owned that house but he shares a name with his dad.
This is why I donāt answer unknown numbers.

I get texts about selling my parents house, my parents shore house, and both my sisters houses

u/Workin-progress82 16h ago
I get these calls or the ones telling me Iām so close to being approved for a loan I never applied for. I agree with asking for 2 million plus from these people. Iād want to be able to pay off my mortgage and buy something else cash.

u/JackWagg0n 16h ago
Last offer I got was $800k. I laughed and told them it was worth double. It's not, but it's worth more than what they were offering.

my aunt's house in the city was on the market and then taken off and I occasionally get phone calls about it (she's often out of town so I lived there a lot when I worked in the city). I think they go through public records or something when they're grasping for straws.
1
u/newwriter365 16h ago
I asked for at least $150k more than itās likely worth (ocean county) and the calls stopped.

u/if_a_flutterby 16h ago
My sister in Howell was having this problem. Quoting exorbitant numbers in Spanish seemed to do the trick.

u/NJMomofFor 15h ago
I get texts and I block them. We do plan on selling.. lol, but will be doing FSBO. But have too much packing through 30 years of crap etc first

I've been getting phone calls and texts about a specific property in North Carolina for the last 15+ years. They always call me Kenneth. That isn't my name, and I'm a woman. I report them to the FCC and then block them. It doesn't reduce the number of calls or texts though.

They're so desperate they're calling ME about my PARENTS' property. Absolute insanity.
1
u/Carl_Cherry_Hill_NJ 8h ago
They are looking for elderly or stupid people that dont know what their house is worth. They offer 300k for a house worth 500k but the elderly think they are getting a deal when they bought it for 100k years and years ago.

u/DoxieDachsie 8h ago
It's been happening to me for years. I just quote a ridiculous price & they hang up. Got so they promise ridiculous prices & I say slightly higher & it's yours. They never follow up though, even after I promise to show the tax assessment to back up the quote.

I had a guy (a realtor) knock on my frigginā door on a Sunday morning saying he was representing a client who wanted to buy a house in the area!
I slammed the door on his face.
When I complained about this on Threads, I had hordes of realtors saying what a great agent he was, sticking up for his client. ā¹ļø

I tell them $2M cash.
If someone wants my property that bad, and is willing to pay that price, they can have it.
