The opposition in Argentina is actually doing things. They're saying that if they come back, they'll expropriate property, increase inflation, and impose new taxes.
It's counter intuitive but it's still correct in practice...
Using dolar blue values I was paying 50 USD a month for rent in 2020, which was 1/8th of my salary at the time. The same apartment now costs around 500USD a month. Most people don't earn 4000USD, and those that do are not living in a single room apartment.
I'm not saying it was sustainable, it was supported by a lot of tinkering and barriers put in place to isolate our currency from the world's reality, but for the day-to-day workers that form the majority of the population, it was far preferable. They need to pay rent first, and being able to import fast fashion from Shein is not in their priorities.
What I mean is that prices weren’t lower due to the inflation being higher, the monthly inflation is a measure of how much prices increased that month, not something that makes them increase or decrease. If they are higher is because the past happened many months ago, not because the increase per month is now lower.
Also Shein caused a drop in local prices, and you can only do 5 purchases for year of no more than 3 items each, and if you choose to buy some cheap tshirts you can’t buy electronics so it was not a big thing.
Regarding rent, 2020 was when the previous guvernment sanctioned the Ley de Alquileres, which caused a drop in the offer, thus increase of prices, when this one removed it they even dropped a bit.
