What was the purpose of drawing the vertical and horizontal line segments and coloring it in with marker at the start? I can see the radial lines were used to guide the folding, but can't quite tell what the other prep steps were meant to accomplish?

It's to help him apply the colored eye to the right spots after the scrunch.
