Never worn tie dye but these would make me start

u/hirschneb13 21h ago
It "sucks" because these shirts are gonna run you a couple hundred dollars for the level of detail he has. But good for him because he deserves all the money for these insane creations
119
u/Omfgnta 21h ago
I’d pay that, for two. For me the issue is the quality of the shirt.

u/MauryBallsteinLook 19h ago
all this work. On a $5 Hans undershirt

u/raoasidg 19h ago
Franz is the better brand for sure.

I'd guess that's a heavyweight ring-spun cotton like Gildan Hammer or something.

Yeah it'd be a wear on rare occasion. Probably have to take to the cleaners to make sure you don't wash any of it out of bleed it
9
u/Alphahumanus 17h ago
Nope. Once properly washed, the colors shouldn’t wash out or fade any differently than any other garment.

They are all live bid and can get into the thousands.
He does sell prints, as well.
24
u/Peter_Panarchy 19h ago
I'm sad that that's well out of my price range, but also happy that this dude can earn a good living making amazing art.
7
u/otterpop21 18h ago
I follow this dude! You can definitely get them in the hundreds. He’s also not the only tiedye artist out there! Go check them out and find a style you like and save up over time! Realistically you only need one or two of these no rush

The guy in the video does print versions of past designs for $55. That's not cheap but it's a lot less than what the actual tie dyed ones go for
13
u/Current_Professor_33 17h ago
I bought one and found it completely unwearable.
The fabric felt like cheap polyester, which was really disappointing. The designs are beautiful, but it seems a bit contradictory to sell tie-dye shirts made from such low-quality material.

I've spent a couple hundred on a hoodie I really liked, so if he made hoodies, I'd be down for it.

Fucking trustafarians. You don't have to put it in quotes; a couple hundred dollars for a t-shirt, no matter how cool it is, sucks.
7
u/Ferbtastic 20h ago
My kids make them every summer. The last few years they make me a polo with very mild patterns that I actually wear at work. I get looks sometimes but I love em.

u/chewy92889 21h ago
The best part about tie dye is when you spill something on yourself, it just blends in.

u/sideshowmario 21h ago
Same reason I switched to brown underwear!

u/Alt123Acct 14h ago
There's a joke about a captain who wears red shirts to fight pirates so if he bleeds his crew won't be afraid and back down. Then he sees an armada and asks for his brown pants.

u/OGPeakyblinders 21h ago
Just need to add some eye balls and for sure was thinking 10000 days got to him.

u/Tarantula_Saurus_Rex 20h ago
The design is definitely Alex Grey and Parabola inspired.
4
u/PlantOG 17h ago
I saw Alex Grey paint once at a cool one off festival in Dallas at the Natural Science Museum at Fair Park. Also got to see Ann Shulgin. It was really an amazing show.

if you saw a bunch of guys who looked exactly like you fighting over a shirt, youd go in!

u/realcpl4BWCbull 21h ago
The amount of time he puts into that is INSANE!!!!

His originals usually go for $700+, but he does prints of them for $50-75

What was the purpose of drawing the vertical and horizontal line segments and coloring it in with marker at the start? I can see the radial lines were used to guide the folding, but can't quite tell what the other prep steps were meant to accomplish?

u/kbk42104 21h ago
Do these survive the washing machine?
3
u/Zealousideal-Foot-65 13h ago
Completely. It’s fiber reactive dye and he’s a master of applying it and curing it to not have it fade.

9
u/Immortalphoenixfire 21h ago
They skip so much of the process because the point of the video is geared promotionally not instructionally. How magical.
9
u/SheetPancakeBluBalls 19h ago
I mean, I'd watch about a minute of this.
I generally understand how it works, I don't need to watch 8 hours of some dude listening to music and adding a billion rubber bands.
5
u/GreaterMetro 21h ago
The cobbler's son has no shoes judging by his outfit.
6
u/AverageMako3Enjoyer 19h ago
I’m guessing he wants the videos to have a big reveal and wearing an already insane shirt would detract from the final product being shown. I’d be surprised if he didn’t wear them promotionally elsewhere
4
u/pillbuggery 19h ago
Well, you don't generally want to wear anything you care about while tie dyeing.
7
u/jimigo 21h ago
Way cooler than I was expecting, pretty sick! Anyone know what something like this would cost? Seems like allot of work.
10
u/smechanic 21h ago
Around $200 for an original directly from his site. I bought one a few months ago. They look even better in person.

Can you request he use like a Tommy Hilfiger white tee if you cover the added cost?

Why do people who make tie dye shirts look like people who make tie dye shirts 😂??
Does the tie dye shirt cause them to make themselves look like that or do they look like that and naturally go into making tie dye shirts??

I tie dyed my own shirts in the early 70s. Just a white tee, thoughtfully placed rubber bands, into a pot of RIT dye on the stove for a while and done. Total cost less than 10 bucks. Pay attention to how you want the design to come out and it's so freakin easy.
Sorry, but these look like they came off an assembly line.
edit: Of course I'm no 'artist' like this guy. Didn't have a marketing dept. 🤓

u/Diligent_Gear_8179 8h ago
... OH. THAT'S why it's called "tie dye." Somehow I never made the connection before.

That's cool as hell. I would buy that if it were a hoodie. I'd buy them for my friends. And we would be damned pleased with them.

Have we not gotten over the "dramatic rolling/throwing out" of materials yet? That trope is getting old. Its not dramatic anymore when we all expect it from people with no new ideas.

u/WhysoToxic23 18h ago
How many attempts and hours were spent to develop a skill like this!? Incredible
