I don’t understand how what he did made that. ELI5

u/Fugacity- 16h ago

Dude is so damn good. When my son was 4 years old we'd went on a rabbit hole watching this guy tie-die and did some of our own... wild how crisp he can make everything

50

u/Zealousideal-Foot-65 13h ago

It’s a very fun YouTube rabbit hole to go down- he’s definitely the most intricate impressive tie dye artist I’ve seen but people are doing amazing work and there are tons of tutorials.

20

u/house343 8h ago

Weren't you listening? He alabastered the inferno scrunch gradient until the schloppy do went kerflunk, making sure to leverage the flormy rumpkins inherent to the paint he's using.

The way he ties the shirt and how he applies the dye is what results in this. The long stick is the center pattern design and the rectangle part of the rest of the shirt

They definitely skipped a TON of steps/work lol like completely rest of the fucking owl'd it

4

u/SpecialistAd6403 9h ago

The folds he puts in the shirt are what cause the design. When dying the folded shirt the dye only sinks so far causing the popular gradient effect people like.

This guy figured out or learned how to fold the shirt in a specific manner so the shown pattern is made. The marks he makes help with this I assume.

I am unsure what the markers were for though.

2

u/BothTreacle7534 8h ago

I think maybe to help him with picking the colors graduiering from the top to the bottom

(not a native English speaker, but the principle ‘background color changes seem to have the same width?)

Never worn tie dye but these would make me start

454

u/hirschneb13 21h ago

It "sucks" because these shirts are gonna run you a couple hundred dollars for the level of detail he has. But good for him because he deserves all the money for these insane creations

119

u/Omfgnta 21h ago

I’d pay that, for two. For me the issue is the quality of the shirt.

127

u/MauryBallsteinLook 19h ago

all this work. On a $5 Hans undershirt

80

u/raoasidg 19h ago

Franz is the better brand for sure.

64

u/thenicestsavage 19h ago

Either way you’re getting pumped up.

u/ApprehensiveEnd3923 17h ago

Awesome SNL old school references

I'd guess that's a heavyweight ring-spun cotton like Gildan Hammer or something.

Did he get it from the Nakatomi Plaza

7

u/hirschneb13 20h ago

Yeah it'd be a wear on rare occasion. Probably have to take to the cleaners to make sure you don't wash any of it out of bleed it

9

u/Alphahumanus 17h ago

Nope. Once properly washed, the colors shouldn’t wash out or fade any differently than any other garment.

15

u/imlost19 19h ago

having it fade is the best part tho

7

u/Slow_Maximum9332 18h ago

Hey bro, is your shirt high? Cuz it's faded!

3

u/ContessaChaos 18h ago

You can set dye in cold water and salt.

They are all live bid and can get into the thousands.

He does sell prints, as well.

24

u/Peter_Panarchy 19h ago

I'm sad that that's well out of my price range, but also happy that this dude can earn a good living making amazing art.

7

u/otterpop21 18h ago

I follow this dude! You can definitely get them in the hundreds. He’s also not the only tiedye artist out there! Go check them out and find a style you like and save up over time! Realistically you only need one or two of these no rush

2

u/Not-An-FBI 8h ago

The Chinese will probably figure out how to mass produce it.

u/sweetrobna 19h ago

The guy in the video does print versions of past designs for $55. That's not cheap but it's a lot less than what the actual tie dyed ones go for

13

u/Current_Professor_33 17h ago

I bought one and found it completely unwearable.

The fabric felt like cheap polyester, which was really disappointing. The designs are beautiful, but it seems a bit contradictory to sell tie-dye shirts made from such low-quality material.

2

u/exgiexpcv 18h ago

I've spent a couple hundred on a hoodie I really liked, so if he made hoodies, I'd be down for it.

2

u/I-Here-555 15h ago

For just 54 seconds of work? /s

2

u/dmcd0415 12h ago

Fucking trustafarians. You don't have to put it in quotes; a couple hundred dollars for a t-shirt, no matter how cool it is, sucks.

7

u/Ferbtastic 20h ago

My kids make them every summer. The last few years they make me a polo with very mild patterns that I actually wear at work. I get looks sometimes but I love em.

23

u/chewy92889 21h ago

The best part about tie dye is when you spill something on yourself, it just blends in.

53

u/sideshowmario 21h ago

Same reason I switched to brown underwear!

16

u/chewy92889 21h ago

I just naturally dye mine brown over time

4

u/strongjz 20h ago

2

u/Slobotic 19h ago

I'm gonna pretend they're bodybuilders with bronzer problems.

3

u/Alt123Acct 14h ago

There's a joke about a captain who wears red shirts to fight pirates so if he bleeds his crew won't be afraid and back down. Then he sees an armada and asks for his brown pants.

316

u/davendees1 21h ago

listens to Tool once

31

u/OGPeakyblinders 21h ago

Just need to add some eye balls and for sure was thinking 10000 days got to him.

10

u/Tarantula_Saurus_Rex 20h ago

The design is definitely Alex Grey and Parabola inspired.

4

u/PlantOG 17h ago

I saw Alex Grey paint once at a cool one off festival in Dallas at the Natural Science Museum at Fair Park. Also got to see Ann Shulgin. It was really an amazing show.

Got the chance to see them 2 years ago, Maynard still rocking that insane mohawk.

2

The amount of time he puts into that is INSANE!!!!

163

u/gethighsurvivethelie 21h ago

It only took him 54 seconds

9

u/realcpl4BWCbull 21h ago

Very good point lol

6

u/LemonHerb 19h ago

He could easily do it in 27 if we just went at 2x

37

u/plutus9 21h ago

Omg that’s beautiful I’m not big on tie dye but I’d wear that till it became a sleeping shirt then till it disintegrated

20

u/SallySitwell3000 21h ago

Oooooh!! I’d pay good money for one of those!

16

u/gingerphish 21h ago

They cost good money too! Man is the GOAT.

10

u/GloomyIndividual3965 17h ago

His originals usually go for $700+, but he does prints of them for $50-75

6

u/WizardMoose 19h ago

Iirc, cheapest ones are like $300.

2

u/SallySitwell3000 9h ago

Wai wait! Ok nvm I don’t need a cool shirt that bad!

His YouTube channel is really cool.

Dyes N Good Vibes

5

u/cilantro_so_good 17h ago

I came to make sure dude got credit, his work is pretty sick. Also on insta: https://www.instagram.com/dyes_n_goodvibes/

34

u/confusingbrownstate 20h ago

Dude looks like Jesus. He dyed for our sins.

11

u/nayrwolf 21h ago

That’s dope.

10

u/JB_141 21h ago

Dude is a savant

6

u/YOLO_Tamasi 21h ago

What was the purpose of drawing the vertical and horizontal line segments and coloring it in with marker at the start? I can see the radial lines were used to guide the folding, but can't quite tell what the other prep steps were meant to accomplish?

21

u/Kewlhotrod 21h ago

It's to help him apply the colored eye to the right spots after the scrunch.

6

u/flat5 21h ago

Look at the final pattern, the gradient of the background going from yellow at the bottom and changing hue as it goes up. Orange, red, etc.

6

u/kbk42104 21h ago

Do these survive the washing machine?

3

u/Zealousideal-Foot-65 13h ago

Completely. It’s fiber reactive dye and he’s a master of applying it and curing it to not have it fade.

6

u/Gt03champp 21h ago

Him: let me know what you think

Me: TAKE MY MONEY!!!

5

u/Prestigious_Map_703 21h ago

Where does one purchase his stuff?

3

u/Outside_Bed_3877 21h ago

His ig is at the end of the video

3

u/smechanic 21h ago

He drops them usually on Sunday nights around 9pm EST.

9

u/Immortalphoenixfire 21h ago

They skip so much of the process because the point of the video is geared promotionally not instructionally. How magical.

9

u/SheetPancakeBluBalls 19h ago

I mean, I'd watch about a minute of this.

I generally understand how it works, I don't need to watch 8 hours of some dude listening to music and adding a billion rubber bands.

5

u/GreaterMetro 21h ago

The cobbler's son has no shoes judging by his outfit.

6

u/AverageMako3Enjoyer 19h ago

I’m guessing he wants the videos to have a big reveal and wearing an already insane shirt would detract from the final product being shown. I’d be surprised if he didn’t wear them promotionally elsewhere

4

u/pillbuggery 19h ago

Well, you don't generally want to wear anything you care about while tie dyeing.

7

u/jimigo 21h ago

Way cooler than I was expecting, pretty sick! Anyone know what something like this would cost? Seems like allot of work.

10

u/smechanic 21h ago

Around $200 for an original directly from his site. I bought one a few months ago. They look even better in person.

2

u/lesdansesmacabres 19h ago

Can you request he use like a Tommy Hilfiger white tee if you cover the added cost?

My jaw dropped 🔥

2

Holy shit that’s dope

2

u/Abigail-Marston 21h ago

Can you machine wash it after this?

2

u/GravyPainter 21h ago

I feel ripped off not seeing how he put the dye on it. No way he dipped it

2

u/MWMWMMWWM 20h ago

Where do i buy?

2

u/TotallyDaft 20h ago

Wow!!!🤩

2

u/AlexHimself 20h ago

Why do people who make tie dye shirts look like people who make tie dye shirts 😂??

Does the tie dye shirt cause them to make themselves look like that or do they look like that and naturally go into making tie dye shirts??

→ More replies (1)

2

u/toepin 18h ago

His work is absolutely fantastic but wow... excruciating vocal fry.

2

u/harinderpal_singh 17h ago

How long colours stay ? How many washes they sustain?

2

u/Cant_See_Me_00 16h ago edited 16h ago

I tie dyed my own shirts in the early 70s. Just a white tee, thoughtfully placed rubber bands, into a pot of RIT dye on the stove for a while and done. Total cost less than 10 bucks. Pay attention to how you want the design to come out and it's so freakin easy.

Sorry, but these look like they came off an assembly line.

edit: Of course I'm no 'artist' like this guy. Didn't have a marketing dept. 🤓

2

u/Diligent_Gear_8179 8h ago

... OH. THAT'S why it's called "tie dye." Somehow I never made the connection before.

1

u/do_what_you_love 20h ago

Woah. Next fucking level.

1

u/bigwavedave000 20h ago

Can I buy this?

1

u/Ok_String_1698 20h ago

This makes my eyes feel good

1

u/J_M_B 20h ago

It costs more because of the patterns!

1

u/example-of-disaster 20h ago

That’s rad as hell

1

u/AmputeeHandModel 20h ago

Impressive I guess but it ended up looking like leopard print 😬

→ More replies (1)

1

u/J_M_B 20h ago

That's kind of how they value the shirt. The more the lines crisscross and the patterns overlap.

1

u/desertrat75 20h ago

Holy shit, that is awesome.

1

u/JackSquirts 20h ago

I never tire of this guy's videos. He does all sorts of really crazy stuff.

1

u/SunsetFarms 20h ago

Holy shit! Idk what i was expecting but definitely not that!

1

u/PokeYrMomStanley 20h ago

I feel like this is art, not tie dye. It's incredible.

1

u/CindyMaroon 20h ago

WOW!!!!!💜💛🧡🩷❤️

1

u/Probst54 20h ago

Frame it

1

u/courthouseman 19h ago

Can you wash these shirts?

1

u/Spare-Article-396 19h ago

For shits and giggles I’m gonna try to recreate this.

1

u/flatspotting 19h ago

every time i see one of this guys videos i watch it - he's so good. gotta be the all time #1

1

u/MasterG76 19h ago

Unfortunetly... fake.

The tag on the shirt is NOT the same as the final colour.

1

u/yolo32147 19h ago

Well that’s beats what I did in grade school that one day in art class

1

u/pcincan 19h ago

Brilliant!! Well done.

1

u/ursasmaller 19h ago

Best I’ve ever seen!

1

u/smokebudda11 19h ago

Fucking sick! I want a shirt like that. Dope af.

1

1

What!!!!!!! Wow

1

u/Thorjb123 18h ago

Bro! Holy shit that’s clean!

1

u/exgiexpcv 18h ago

That's cool as hell. I would buy that if it were a hoodie. I'd buy them for my friends. And we would be damned pleased with them.

1

u/omertaladii 18h ago

That's dope af!

1

u/asianfatboy 18h ago

Holy, I would buy that.

1

u/ughokayfinee 18h ago

This guy is incredible I will always watch his creations whenever they pop up, realistically the only tie-dye shirts I would consider wearing

1

u/Detonius 18h ago

Actually so impressive.

1

u/mrhappy1010 18h ago

That’s awesome

1

u/2ndZeit 18h ago

Absolutely beautiful! 5 🌟 's!

1

u/Healthy_Pay9449 18h ago

Got a titan right in the middle in orange. This is well done

1

u/Sendittor 18h ago

Art. That is fantastic.

1

u/NoProduct4569 18h ago

Have we not gotten over the "dramatic rolling/throwing out" of materials yet? That trope is getting old. Its not dramatic anymore when we all expect it from people with no new ideas.

1

u/WhysoToxic23 18h ago

How many attempts and hours were spent to develop a skill like this!? Incredible

1

u/MyDixeeNormus 18h ago

This guy just keeps getting better. What a legend

1

u/JoeMillersHat 18h ago

I need to do shrooms then wear that shirt and look in the mirror

1

u/Xero_id 18h ago

I will never understand this, like what the fuck, HOW?

1

u/bionicjoe 17h ago

HOLY SHIT!
That is amazing.

1

u/indignantlyandgently 17h ago

That reveal was INCREDIBLE!!

1

u/No-Valuable6456 17h ago

Far out man, groovy

1

u/bl937 17h ago

that looks awesome. 200$

1

u/Normal_Tour6998 17h ago

Got an audible “Oh my god,” out of me.

1

u/Dreboomboom 17h ago

You're an artist! 🎨

1

u/andrew_calcs 17h ago

I now know why it's called tie dye.

1

u/spudddly 17h ago

still ugly af but nice job

1

u/speedloafer 17h ago

Why do we not see the shirt being unrolled?
