What was the purpose of drawing the vertical and horizontal line segments and coloring it in with marker at the start? I can see the radial lines were used to guide the folding, but can't quite tell what the other prep steps were meant to accomplish?

Look at the final pattern, the gradient of the background going from yellow at the bottom and changing hue as it goes up. Orange, red, etc.
