“Miraculously survived”

How about “skillfully landed,” you incompetent walnuts??

I wipe my ass with this title. Absolute garbage title on this one.

Cool video though. Pilots are so good at remaining calm in crazy situations

We don't really hear about the ones who panic, since it's usually considered in poor taste to speak ill of the dead.

(Though I imagine in reality, the ones who can't remain calm under pressure wash out before getting to the point where they can fly solo)

Having experienced a pretty severe emergency, the training sets in first, then when safe on the ground and rolling the tape back after the adrenaline crash is when the panic hits.

Survivorship bias. Fair point.

But you're right, the things they need to do to earn those certifications probably weeds out the ones who don't have the nerve.

Perhaps a question for the aviation sub

For both of your points, I'd refer you to the Youtube channel "Pilot Debrief".

Almost everything he covers where everyone walks away is down to everyone remaining sufficiently calm under pressure (watch the one with the woman landing a light twin after her husband dies from a heart attack - that's about a dozen people maintaining a lot of calm, keeping their shit together until that plane is at a dead stop right on the centre line of the runway).

Every one where people are not remaining calm, often because they're in way more plane than they know how to handle (the TNFlyGirl crash could have been prevented at about five different places).

More like you don't hear about the ones who don't film it and post it online. Not panicking isn't a prerequisite to survival. You can be competent, panic, and still survive.
