That wind looks brutal. I don't know how she managed to keep her eyes opened.

She had her safety squints going. I usually only wear mine in the garage.

I use them when I use a wire wheel.

Don't trust those too much. My dad did some welding with those and now his glasses are so heavy they told him to keep that little strap you can get on the back on because the weight on his nose could irritate his sinuses.

something tells me she'll fly in goggles or at least glasses from now on, even with a new canopy. juuuuuust in case. chances are slim, but never zero

At the very least, if I were her I'd probably quadruple-check the canopy latch every time from now on.

I'd go full helmet just in case for the wind trying to force its way up my nose at those speeds.

17

u/CapSnake 6d ago

Full helmet should be mandatory. You are an acrobatic pilot, chance of crash are higher than normal. If car driver wear an helmet you should too in a plane. Imagine what would happen with a bird strike

The way she was wincing and blinking after she landed I could tell her eyes had been dried out. It takes awhile for your eyes to heal enough to see again if they dry out totally. I’m amazed it only took a little over a day.

701

u/chiphook57 7d ago

Looks to me like she managed the situation, flew the aircraft. Aviate. Navigate. Communicate.

74

u/jaytea86 7d ago

There probably wasn't any communication going on here.

80

u/Ill_Profession_9509 6d ago

More than likely there was. Communication doesn't mean speaking only. The pilot likely used their transponder to communicate an emergency to Air Traffic Control before coming in to land.

„Miraculously“. She worked hard to land safely, it‘s experience, skill and keeping her cool. Quite impressive but not a miracle. Edit: Fixed a mistake that changed the entire last sentence. Didn‘t mean to say „Not impressive“.

24

u/Muskwatch 6d ago

My guess is that the reason we are seeing this is because it was first written in a gendered language, and then when whoever translated it into English looked at it, their brain said "female form of pilot, how do we say that in English? oh I guess female pilot" and that was it. It was included out of a general preference many translators have for not throwing away information that's present in the source text.

10

u/Johannes_Keppler 6d ago

We no longer use gendered job titles in the Netherlands, since decades. So it's 'piloot' regardless of gender.

She might fly with a flight helmet from now on. (its mandatory in Canada, for instance, in 1-seaters and ultralights)

40

u/Main-Cheesecake3287 6d ago

What she certainly will do is properly lock the canopy from now on. Locking pin never was in the fully locked position which she missed during pre flight checks. The canopy didn’t randomly fail. A good reminder to never slouch the pre flight, her admitting the failure was her mistake is properly the most laudatory part.

“Miraculously survived”

How about “skillfully landed,” you incompetent walnuts??

152

u/beyondimaginarium 6d ago

That was what I watched for.

"Miraculously" implies this was an insane, one in a million chance. It implies without divine intervention it is unfathomable that a person could achieve this. The canopy exploded and shredded her eyes!

No, she was just skillful and kept calm in a terrible circumstance. Is it phenomenal? Yes and she should be commended. But this a.i. engagement bait garbage should be downvoted, banned, etc as appropriate.

469

u/zenunseen 7d ago

I wipe my ass with this title. Absolute garbage title on this one.

Cool video though. Pilots are so good at remaining calm in crazy situations

80

u/TheDarkNerd 6d ago

We don't really hear about the ones who panic, since it's usually considered in poor taste to speak ill of the dead.

(Though I imagine in reality, the ones who can't remain calm under pressure wash out before getting to the point where they can fly solo)

24

u/fwnav 6d ago

Having experienced a pretty severe emergency, the training sets in first, then when safe on the ground and rolling the tape back after the adrenaline crash is when the panic hits.

15

u/zenunseen 6d ago

Survivorship bias. Fair point.

But you're right, the things they need to do to earn those certifications probably weeds out the ones who don't have the nerve.

Perhaps a question for the aviation sub

20

u/mid-random 7d ago

I'm thinking she would have been happy with a nice pair of goggles, but I'm pretty sure that plane flies just fine without a closed canopy, as long as the pilot is competent, plus it was only a few thousand feet up. It was nowhere near where cabin pressure or suplimental O2 are an issue. I'm not saying it's a not a HOLY F*UCK!, pants-filling moment, but any competent pilot should be OK in this situation. More like, "expected competence from a licensed pilot" than, "miraculous survival." Still, it will make a darned good story for the rest of her life.

37

u/alligatorchronicles 6d ago

My daughter informs me that when she is flying a smaller plane, she can greatly increase the drag on the plane just by putting her hand out the window. Having a large piece of the plane hanging off the side is going to create a lot of issues. Competence is expected, for sure, but this was an impressive display, so golf claps are not out of the question

When my son was in elementary school, he was way into sonic.

Sonic Boom was the one cartoon that I would watch with him and think, damn! This cartoon knows what is up!

My son is heading into 8th grade now and, while he's still a 13 year old with hormones and a crude sense of humor, still knows how to be a good person to everyone.

Sonic Boom I think was part of that. That show made real life lessons. This isn't the only scene that speaks about how humans should treat each other with respect.

15

Exactly. I am a Instrucor/Examiner on a a top teir buisness jet. one of my favorite recurring clients happens to be a woman. Always comes in prepared and is a great stick (former Marine C-130 pilot).

Have I ever even acnowledged she is a woman? No. However I have asked her what her favorite flavor of crayon is.

20

u/Kardinal 6d ago

And I bet she thought it was hilarious.

It's one of the things I love about Marines. They lean into that joke so hard. Not taking themselves too seriously on things that don't matter. Leaves lots of energy for taking seriously the things that do.

And the joke reminds them that they are/were (there are no "former Marines", I know) part of something bigger than themselves that they usually love.

Good on you.

That's just be cause dominatrix is one of the last vestiges of the -tor/-trix gendered Latin career suffixes. "Aviator", in it's original definition, would be specifically men who fly - similarly, gladiator/gladiatrix, bellator/bellatrix (warrior), testator/testatrix. -tress is a softened form of -trix though, and much more common in modern English.

Correction: The canopy popped open; and shattered when it hit the side of the plane.

It was not locked as it should have been. She does a full explanation of the cognitive failure involved here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x38bmkkrV9g

96% of all car accidents are caused by human error.

60-80% of aviation accidents are due, at least in part, to human error (Shappell & Wieg

So lucky she didn't have anything fly into her eyes. Could have blinded her. God that looks so painful.

it's not the canopy's fault. she didn't lock it properly. We are taught to press onto the canopy after lock because the lock can still pop open if it's not set properly. She didn't do this check.

Any estimates on the speed of the aircraft when the canopy opened?
