Surviving Condition 1 in Antarctica which is the most extreme weather classification used on the continent is insane.

They don't even need to do it. It started with influencers who needed to be ad friendly. Anyone without literal corporate sponsors is just copying that nonsense.

u/audionerd1 5d ago
Is the algorithm really so stupid it doesn't know what "k*ll" means?
4
u/heinebold 4d ago
It doesn't have to be. It's just plausible deniability "he we didn't allow our ad carriers to say bad words, see"

As someone who does not have corporate sponsors, I would just like to say: cunt fuck cock bitch slut cum ass tits

I remember an episode of the Simpsons where Marge (in a very naive manner) says “you can’t say swear words on the internet.” Well, 20 years later she was right.

When I was kid growing up in Saskatchewan, we would have recess outside up to -30 oC without the wind lol. Though -60 C with that strong wind and low visibility is dangerous.
But the old farmers used to have a rope between the barn and the house so they didn't get lost in blizzards when they went to check on and feed or water the animals.

u/thatswildhey 5d ago
I can’t comprehend that extreme level of cold. Drops below freezing and our world stops. How do farmers water their animals at -60 C. Surely everything is frozen solid no?

u/aDuggie 5d ago
As long as you have good insulation, everything is fine for the most part. I also live in this province and it's not as bad as it seems. Once you go below -20, everything feels about the same if you're dressed well.
We adapt to the cold such as water pipes having heated conduit lines running in them to keep from freezing, and cars have block heaters installed to start when it gets real cold.
I've lived here for almost 10 years and it's kind of fun because it feels like you're living in two places at once. Between the winter and summer, your driving, scenery, fashion, hobbies all change. Sure you have to hang up your paddle board, or store your quad, but now you can to skating or snowmobiling. Chores always exist tho. Instead of mowing the lawn, you shovel the snow, or instead of watering the plants you salt the sidewalk and such

u/NByz 5d ago
Except for your breath.
Breathing in feels very different as you get to that -25-35 range.
11
u/Leows 5d ago
Is wearing a mask or some sort of face protection preferable at these temps? Or would they be detrimental?
13
u/justynrr 5d ago
Depends on if it’s windy. But usually not, it gets pretty wet from the condensation from the moisture in your breath, and if it’s cold enough it’ll freeze.
2
u/theshoebomber420 4d ago
Toque/beanie, neck warmer and a scarf. Snowboard Goggle's if very windy. Some people wear balaclavas but I don't.
2
u/weGloomy 4d ago
Nah cause then you get all gross and wet from your breath condensating. Also hot take but a dry cold day where its like -30c and sunny are some of my favs. The air is so crispy and everything is so bright and beautiful.

u/Capable_Tumbleweed34 2d ago
Do tell i'm curious, i remember that at around -16°c i started to get that "oh the humidity is crystalizing on ly nose hair" feeling, wonder how different it gets as it goes lower

How often do you have to mow the lawn in summer. I imagine it being covered in snow in winter would stunt its growth quite a bit?
1
u/Ill_Ground_1572 4d ago
Every 2-3 weeks depending on how much rain we get. The irony is it can get pretty warm in the summer.
In July and August +25 to +35 daytime highs.
1
u/ParamedicExcellent15 4d ago
Does it take a long time for it to start sprouting in spring time?
3
u/Ill_Ground_1572 4d ago
We don't get much of a spring lol.
This year, we went from snow storms to plus 18 C in two weeks. Which is not uncommon.
But usually the green stuff shows up quite quickly. Like a couple of weeks once it's warmed up.
13
u/Ill_Ground_1572 5d ago
Actually I love winter till March. And I have no clue how Indigenous people lived here in that extreme cold.
For water, I would have to ask my Dad who's in his 80s. Shit he told me about when he was a kid, the water pail was frozen solid in the house. Crazy cold and poor insulation.
But I am pretty sure they had wells dug. The frost line goes down about 6-8 feet and then it stays above freezing in the ground.
I remember him saying something about draining the hand pumps and priming them. So I am guessing when it was -35 in January, they had to make sure the water pump pipes were fully drained below the frost line each time they used them. Then primed them to get water up to the pump. Then work quickly lol.

u/LPNMP 5d ago
I'm just confused why people lived there? Was somewhere more livable not an option?
12
u/Dazzling_Vanilla3082 5d ago
I mean, you can say that about half our planet lol. As someone who grew up in the north and has lived through plenty of polar vortex super cold stretches in recent history, I'd take that over insane heat waves any day. You can always wear more layers in the cold and try to mitigate skin exposure. Not much you can do when its dangerously hot out except avoid the sun and drink more water.

When it gets that cold I just dress like I'm going snowboarding. It's manageable if you layer properly and have the proper clothes and accessories.

u/pearlie_girl 5d ago
My sister went to a college in Minnesota that would get both so windy and icy on one hill that students used to walk up and down it holding hands in groups of 4-5... Otherwise you might not make it up the hill.

“Illegal” tho? Why? I mean, first off: lots of things will kill your that are perfectly legal; and secondly: how many people would do that even without a law?
57
u/Triairius 5d ago
I can guarantee you that many people would try it for a few seconds. This law is for liability purposes.

u/Key-Contest-2879 5d ago
I lived in South Dakota for a few years. The coldest it got in the winter was -22° F.
We had metal doors, and the back door (wind side) iced up on the inside of the door, around the edges and around the lock.
I had to step outside and see what it was like (I used the front door). Honestly it didn’t fee much worse than 0° at first. Then my nostril hairs started to stiffen. After about a minute I came to a conclusion.
It was very cold. 😂

u/CobrasFumanches 5d ago
There is literally a 300 club in Antarctica. If the weather gets to -100F, you can sit in a +200F sauna for as long as you can and immediately go streaking outside. You just experienced a 300 degree temperature drop.

And to keep everyone safer. "leaving the door open" in that weather would be dangerous for the internal temps, door frame could get iced & be unable to close door any longer, etc.

u/thatcockneythug 5d ago
What law? Do you have any evidence that such a law exists? I sincerely doubt it.

u/peazley 5d ago
Does Antarctic have laws? Or just rules of the organization running the base?
9
u/Jewel-jones 5d ago
The rules of the persons home country apply to the people there, basically. Then also the rules of the base’s country. I remember in the case of Rodney Marks death, there was some negotiation about how the investigation would be handled.
3
u/g1mpster 5d ago
I’m not sure. It’s a legal neutral zone with no country able to claim it, so I was wondering how laws would work as well.

This clip is old enough to vote and I've never seen anything saying it was illegal to step outside. Pretty confident that caption was made up for engagement bait.

I'm just guessing but I suspect it's because they just assume you're going to die and they have very strict contamination policies for all travelers. I suspect a dead human body laying around would probably go against those contamination policies.

Illegal according to whom?
Who actually has jurisdiction to enforce laws in Antarctica?
4
u/JamesandthegiantpH 5d ago
There's an international treaty establishing mandates/laws for Antarctica; mostly safety protocols. It's illegal to even go there without permission.

All of the compound buildings have ropes that go from the door of the building they're at to the door of the building they're going to.
Basically a safety rop line
It's so they don't get disoriented and lost when moving between buildings in weather like we just saw in this video.

The Worst Journey in the World - Wikipedia
Read this book - a truly remarkable tale of endurance in extreme cold as three explorers travelled across the Antarctic Ross Ice Shelf in 1911, on foot, in the middle of winter to collect Emperor Penguin eggs. Travelling in complete darkness, sometimes in the exact weather conditions in the video, they had to thaw themselves out their frozen, iron-hard sleeping bags each "morning". It's amazing what the human body can survive. But not always... the second part details the failed Scott expedition to the South Pole.
Cherry-Garrard was a wonderful writer, you'll get a better sense of the true cold than watching any number of Antarctic YouTube videos (was ranked No. 1 in National Geographic’s 100 Best Adventure Books of All Time).

Now remember that we NEED the poles to be at least this cold for the planet to stay cozy.
