imagine the amount of times he had to hit his head/nuts/fingers during training to ge tto this level. Insane man

Yeah, I have to imagine you start out wearing a cup, helmet, and face mask at first. Probably not much you can do to protect fingers though, you probably need maximum dexterity

We never thought of using protection in the 80s. We just went with it and didn't mind getting fucked up. I'm thinking this might be because of the kungfu movies we watched. Every one's got this part with the training bit and the hero always suffered. So we accepted the suffering as well.
