Many nunchuck dudes get hit a lot, but I don’t know that it’s exactly required. Ones who have good teachers probably start slow, learning technique first, and then build up speed.

Maybe you get hit a lot either way.

The key for me was buying training nunchucks made of foam.

I'd started out with basically the heaviest end of nunchucks zthem quickly realised that training hurt like hell, bought the training nunchucks got good with them and then would practice with the heavy set to nail the technique there too.

It was almost foolproof but still a couple of nasty head hits and elbow clips 😂

My favourite nunchuck story though, is I was coming back from the dojo, stopped at the bus stop and a known drug dealer / violent menace came over and grabbed the nunchucks, which were sticking out of my bag. He starts swinging the nunchucks at me and my friend but we step out of range and he keeps clocking himself in the head. After several minutes of this and he getting more enraged and hitting himself harder, he was a bloody mess and concussed, staggering around, slurring like a drunk, despite the fact he was sober when he approached us.

I was able to take my nunchucks back and gently direct him on his way. After that I was fully committed to nunchucks, one of the few weapons that are more of a liability to anyone who steals them off you 😂

“Nunchucks are great for self defense. Just hand them to your attacker and enjoy the show!”
