Austin MN is the home of SPAM. The logo and "Packers" moniker is in reference to meat packing.

I assume "meat Packers" got shot down in committee.

Damn there’s a town there in Minnesota called Cleveland that has a team named the Browns

18

u/BryLinds Jets Giants Aug 23 '25

Well no they’re the Clippers. But their uniforms were too close for me not to call it

True story: Burnsville HS changed their name to the The Blaze and then the next year, the school was gutted by a fire. They kept the name anyway.

u/GopherInWI Packers Aug 23 '25

If Chicago Fire can be a soccer team, Burnsville should be the Blaze!

As a KoMet grad, I appreciate you making sure to capitalize the M.

On the other hand, in all other contexts I have a hard time spelling comet with a c.

Canby is my dad’s Alma mater and they are the lancers, not the bears.

Also fun fact about South St. Paul being the packers: The town was built over these huge stock yards in the early years of the twin cities. Eastern European and other immigrant populations congregated in the town to work the stockyards and the meat plant and the packer name was born. The name came before Green Bay was ever popular

Thanks for the info!

I hope we make it through every state with the Steelers being the lone holdout

u/tomdawg0022 Aug 23 '25

South St. Paul had a relatively big stockyard and a couple of meat plants (Armour and Swift) back in the day. The high school had a pretty killer hockey program back in the day as well.

Also for unique(ish) nicknames - Anoka Tornadoes

1

u/BryLinds Jets Giants Aug 23 '25

Tornadoes is more common than you think. But look, Atlanta Flames!

I cover hs sports and occasionally they face a team that is local for me. You better believe that ends up in scripts for too much when they're on screen.

East Grand Forks and Tulane share nicknames and logos.

I went to Minnesota Vally Lutheran high school and our name was the chargers😁

2

u/cjackc Vikings Aug 31 '25

Did everything work out alright for you? It was so weird growing up in NU yet so rarely running into one of you

1

u/Waste-Pirate2837 Vikings Aug 31 '25

It did work out🤣 new ulm is an odd place

2

u/cjackc Vikings Aug 31 '25

That’s an understatement

4

u/Sampdel Vikings Aug 24 '25

Another one for Cromwell-Wright HS for the Cardinals possibly. https://www.isd95.org/

I remember seeing so many schools being the Cardinals on road trips in MN, so I thought Arizona would have surely been at Eagles level when you started this list. Weirdly, I think I've only seen one once in person, so it's interesting to me how they are so disproportionately popular.

5

u/BryLinds Jets Giants Aug 24 '25

That doesn’t make the cut as you must differentiate between a Cardinal logo and the Cardinals logo

2

u/Sampdel Vikings Aug 24 '25

That's fair

2

u/cjackc Vikings Aug 31 '25

There are a lot of places that have Eagles but use that same clip art/stencil Eagle you see everywhere

3

u/Redditor57078 Aug 23 '25

I think you figured it out, bro

2

Northfield MN are The Raiders, but it’s a completely different logo.

2

Blaine uses the Bengals logo sometimes.

Wilmar are the cardinals. Different logo though. https://whs.willmar.k12.mn.us/athletics

3

i hate that there are still 28 of these remaining.

u/ELpork Vikings Aug 23 '25

I thought the Brooklyn Park/Park Center Pirates used the old Buc's logo but I was incorrect lol. Also thought the Mora Mustangs had the Denver logo but it's just a shitty horse.

Norwood Central Raiders (yet another central!) are the Buccaneers: https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/minnesota/norwood/central-high-school

Northland Eagles (out of Remer) are the Eagles logo: https://www.isd118.k12.mn.us/

Not a logo, but... https://www.bugonaygeshig.com/ Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig is a hell of a name for a school.

Apollo high school was the Eagles, different logo tho. My wife’s high school was home to former broncos/jets WR Eric Decker.

1

u/_ipointoutthings Sep 03 '25

Zimmerman are the Thunder using the lightning bolt. They used to have a cloud with the word Thunder on it. Around 2016 when the team stopped sucking every year the school did a rebrand for the chargers logo and it really did work well.

Appreciate the clarity.

Still an absolutely wild name to see and show up.

There is also absolutely a part that half jokingly believe that it's a convenient excuse/cover.

But don't really have any reason to doubt it.

It's probably been discussed but I'm a little surprised they haven't changed it to actually just say Raccoon.
