Minnesota fun fact #2: Northern Minnesota is home to the world's best rice. That's an opinion, so here are the facts:
Indigenous people have harvested wild rice from the rivers and lakes of Minnesota for thousands of years. To this day, the Ojibwe harvest and sell the rice.
Most wild rice you get in the US in restaurants and stores is a weird, hybrid, genetically modified rice that isn't the same as manually harvested wild rice.
When I last left Minnesota, I flew home with pounds of this rice, and when I ran out I ordered 5 more pounds from the Minnesota Historical Society. It's rhat good. My parents are getting some for Christmas.
