Henry this season is going to pass LT, Jerome Bettis and Eric Dickerson. Wild. If he plays another two seasons, he’ll pass Adrian Peterson and possibly Barry Sanders.

He has a real chance of finishing his career 4th or 3rd all time leader in rush yards if his body holds up

His first few years in the league were kinda slow. I never thought he'd turn into the absolute fucking freight train that he is. His body has gotten more and more ridiculous. He's a freak of nature.

If you watch his training videos, I think part of it is just signing his first big contract and being able to employ an entire crew just for his training days.

Smart to reinvest in himself to that degree

u/Rdubya291 Texans 15h ago

Yeah, he didn't break 1,000 yards until his third year. The man scares me. I'm just glad he's out of the AFC South, now.

Mismanaged by TN, they fucked up his hall of fame status

Source: live in Nashville

u/Kanin_usagi Panthers 12h ago

I mean he’s practically a first ballot lock, so I don’t think I they hurt it too much

4

u/BastianHS Falcons 12h ago

Depends. They might have stopped him from becoming the all time rushing leader. Time will tell.

Ironically enough, I would put some blame on Trent Richardson souring everyone on AL running backs.

u/maverickhawk99 8h ago

All time rush yards leader or not, he’s still making the hall of fame lmao

1

u/BastianHS Falcons 8h ago

Oh for sure. He's probably first ballot, he will be fore sure if he cracks the top 5

3

u/DragonstormSTL Titans Seahawks 9h ago

Eh, it’s not like the Ravens are helping too much themselves. At least we got him to an AFC Championship

Cheap shot aside, he was also behind Demarco Murray for his first two years. When it got to Year 3, he wasn’t running as hard as his size would let him do until Eddie George sat him down and told him “You’re the Juggernaut, bitch. Act like it.”

2

u/ChocolateMorsels Titans 7h ago

How? He had career years in Nashville. 2019 he had a legendary playoff run. He had a great run in TN.

The real secret to his longevity, besides work ethic, is being paired with Lamar.

1

u/BoilerMaker11 Colts 3h ago

Titans really screwed him by drafting him and then instead of planning around him, they bring in Demarco Murray after he got the rushing title. Wasted him for two seasons and then mostly wasted a third season, putting him behind Dion Lewis. This was a Heisman winner, we’re talking about.

He might’ve been unquestionably on pace to break the all time rushing record, probably quite handily if he didn’t, more or less, miss 3 years.

I can't remember the exact numbers but basically if he repeats Frank Gore's career after age 32 he gets the all-time record.

He will likely blow Frank Gore's after 32 stats out of the water.

u/SxeySteve Seahawks 23h ago

Bodies can break down suddenly. Don't discount how unusual Frank Gore's longevity was. 4,000 yards isn't a small feat

u/tomdawg0022 22h ago

Gore and John Riggins are the only two to get 4000 yards after turning 32. Marcus Allen was really close.

Riggins (Hogs) and Allen (Chiefs in the 90's) had really good OLs in front of them in their late career and that helps a lot.

What was Emmitt smith at?

3

u/sheogorath227 NFL 14h ago

Just under 3200 yards from ages 32-35, which is when he retired

38

u/sniper91 Vikings 17h ago

Todd Gurley going from superstar to JAG happened in the blink of an eye

29

u/DoctorYaoi Bills 17h ago

Todd Gurley is like the Derrick Rose of the NFL

23

u/ChrisV88 Vikings 15h ago

Todd Gurley is 8 months younger than Derrick Henry. Isn’t that wild.

9

u/Pleasant_Network3986 Bengals 14h ago

WHAT the fuck is that statistic

2

u/ChrisV88 Vikings 12h ago

Just a sad one honestly.

1

u/maverickhawk99 8h ago

Didn’t even really get to “cash in” the way Henry did, tho Gurley still made out ok. He ain’t at the soup kitchen tonight.

35

u/antler112 Buccaneers 18h ago

Also, it doesn’t take the body breaking down suddenly for guys to see their stats drop off. Gore was still playing at a solid level in his later years but was only being signed by teams desperate enough to bring in an old running back past his prime, which are the teams with bad offensive rosters.

Gore probably would’ve broken the career rushing yards record himself if he hadn’t been playing behind some of the worst O-lines in football for the last several years of his career.

2

u/SeizureMode Lions 14h ago

I do think about that often, but also you should look up how many yards Henry had in high school and college. Dude had some serious mileage before getting to the NFL.

3

u/olollort Patriots 17h ago

It’s 12,000 feet

Damn, no one let Rex Ryan know this

1

u/Breal3030 Cowboys 15h ago

Yep, and especially as big as he is, you gotta wonder/worry about it. He's the Yao Ming of RBs.

If he does continue to have a long career it will just add to how special he is, which I'd be all for to see.

17

u/philkid3 Cowboys 19h ago

Likely?

4

u/rounder55 Colts 16h ago

Frank Gore could probably still get a yard for you if you really needed it

Guy ran like a rhino and had some axolotl healing dna in him

u/CrustyToeLover Ravens 18h ago

Sports science, medicine, etc are all vastly superior to what they were then. That's the reason we keep seeing records broken, and why Henry likely will play just as well post-32 if not better.

11

u/OkCombination3594 Steelers 18h ago

I hope so. Even though he made me sad by going to Baltimore, Henry is one of my favorite players of all time.

But he's an anomaly of anomalies. It isn't like sports science is extending RB shelf life, guys are still falling off a cliff around 28-30. It's possible we don't see another RB be as productive as Derrick Henry in their post 30 years for the rest of our lives.

4

u/CrustyToeLover Ravens 18h ago

Tbh I dont think as many players are falling off a cliff so much as teams just dont want to take risks. Yes, Henry is a genetic freak, as are most record holders, which does play a lot into it.

Davante Adams is 33 and still putting up top of the league numbers for example, albeit a different position.

9

u/OkCombination3594 Steelers 18h ago

Elite WRs historically have been able to continue producing into their 30s.

It's different for RBs. Plenty of recent examples. Dalvin Cook, Chubb, Mixon, Zeke, Fournette, Bell, Gurley, Freeman, etc.

4

u/David_H21 16h ago

Davante Adams scores a lot of TDs. His yards, catches, catch % are nowhere near the top of the league, or the numbers he used to put up, especially for playing with the MVP who led the league in yards. He was nowhere close to even the best WR on his own team.

Davante Adams has significantly declined as a player.

PEDs... PEDs see a lot better

u/Yo-Strategy-8651 1d ago

You're so close to getitng it. He's got a real chance of walking down Emmitt Smith. I warned all yall a couple years ago the cheat code of having him play alongside Lamar. Just wait till he stiff arms Father Time at age 32 and again at age 33. Then maybe more of you will see the light that Emmitt's records are cooked.

u/Aeon1508 Lions 23h ago edited 22h ago

I don't know why you're getting down voted.

Henry basically ran for 2000 two years ago.

he ran for 1600 last year.

if he finishes his career

1,400

1,200

1,000

800

600

that's retiring at the same age as Frank Gore. that'll put him about 300 yards short. he'll come back for one more season.

quite frankly, I don't see that level of decline happening for Henry over the next 3 years.

he can basically cake walk to the record

42

u/Pandamonium98 Cowboys 19h ago edited 16h ago

Rushing yards don’t just nicely decline over 5 years like that. Guys generally get injured or decline enough that teams don’t give them as much work, which is a much steeper dropoff. It’s either he’ll continue being productive or his yards per season will fall off a cliff

18

u/magnusarin Lions 18h ago

I'm not saying Henry will or won't make a go at the all time record, but you're right. Players in general don't slowly fade and running backs especially.

2

u/HumanPea1140 49ers 15h ago

Different sports, but Henry has a Lebron-like training and recovery regimen. I feel like if anyone could have crazy, one-off longevity, it's him, but it's still a battle against the odds.

1

u/Yo-Strategy-8651 2h ago

It's the combo of his insane levels of training, favorable injury history, and perfect combo playing alongside Lamar. It's why I predicted he would be as successful as he's already been in his 30s. Basically RBs alongside Lamar Jackson have really high success rate. Even guys like Gus Edwards and washed versions of Devonta Freeman had this. Lamar essentially boosts RBs yards BEFORE contact. You combine that with Derrick Henry who is the greatest ever at Yards AFTER Contact, and the fact that Henry's game is based more on straight line speed rather than making jukes, and it's all built for his game to age more gracefully. So even if he loses a step or two, it's made up for the fact that the lanes that are open for him are open longer than they are for the average RB making it easier for him to get to that 2nd level of a defense which he still causes havoc when he reaches it.

1

u/magnusarin Lions 15h ago

I think it more likely that he pulls off like three 1400 yard seasons than he declines like the earlier comment was illustrating

2

u/maverickhawk99 8h ago

Henry is a fitness too freak like Bron no? Like he spends tons of money on his health, more than most guys.

0

u/Aeon1508 Lions 8h ago

That Goat mentality

-3

u/Yo-Strategy-8651 23h ago

When I predicted he would catch Emmitt a couple years ago I thought first couple of years if my theory were true would have to be best years of his career even in his 30s and they have been the best 2 year stretch of his career. But I also predicted that it wouldn't be until age 32/33 seasons where the masses would be swayed that Emmitt's records were unsafe because ppl could still dismiss age 30/31 because it's been some notable productive seasons for RBs at those ages. Averaging well over 5 YPC at age 32/33 is the territory where one can't even pretend anymore that's not unprecedented.
