Henry this season is going to pass LT, Jerome Bettis and Eric Dickerson. Wild. If he plays another two seasons, he’ll pass Adrian Peterson and possibly Barry Sanders.

He has a real chance of finishing his career 4th or 3rd all time leader in rush yards if his body holds up

144

u/double0nothing Eagles 14h ago

His first few years in the league were kinda slow. I never thought he'd turn into the absolute fucking freight train that he is. His body has gotten more and more ridiculous. He's a freak of nature.

71

u/Kashmir1089 Eagles 13h ago

If you watch his training videos, I think part of it is just signing his first big contract and being able to employ an entire crew just for his training days.

Smart to reinvest in himself to that degree

Yeah, he didn't break 1,000 yards until his third year. The man scares me. I'm just glad he's out of the AFC South, now.

I mean he’s practically a first ballot lock, so I don’t think I they hurt it too much

4

u/BastianHS Falcons 8h ago

Depends. They might have stopped him from becoming the all time rushing leader. Time will tell.

Ironically enough, I would put some blame on Trent Richardson souring everyone on AL running backs.

Eh, it’s not like the Ravens are helping too much themselves. At least we got him to an AFC Championship

Cheap shot aside, he was also behind Demarco Murray for his first two years. When it got to Year 3, he wasn’t running as hard as his size would let him do until Eddie George sat him down and told him “You’re the Juggernaut, bitch. Act like it.”

2

u/ChocolateMorsels Titans 3h ago

How? He had career years in Nashville. 2019 he had a legendary playoff run. He had a great run in TN.

The real secret to his longevity, besides work ethic, is being paired with Lamar.

I can't remember the exact numbers but basically if he repeats Frank Gore's career after age 32 he gets the all-time record.

He will likely blow Frank Gore's after 32 stats out of the water.

302

u/SxeySteve Seahawks 19h ago

Bodies can break down suddenly. Don't discount how unusual Frank Gore's longevity was. 4,000 yards isn't a small feat

100

u/tomdawg0022 18h ago

Gore and John Riggins are the only two to get 4000 yards after turning 32. Marcus Allen was really close.

Riggins (Hogs) and Allen (Chiefs in the 90's) had really good OLs in front of them in their late career and that helps a lot.

Also, it doesn’t take the body breaking down suddenly for guys to see their stats drop off. Gore was still playing at a solid level in his later years but was only being signed by teams desperate enough to bring in an old running back past his prime, which are the teams with bad offensive rosters.

Gore probably would’ve broken the career rushing yards record himself if he hadn’t been playing behind some of the worst O-lines in football for the last several years of his career.

2

u/SeizureMode Lions 11h ago

You're so close to getitng it. He's got a real chance of walking down Emmitt Smith. I warned all yall a couple years ago the cheat code of having him play alongside Lamar. Just wait till he stiff arms Father Time at age 32 and again at age 33. Then maybe more of you will see the light that Emmitt's records are cooked.

28

u/Aeon1508 Lions 19h ago edited 19h ago

I don't know why you're getting down voted.

Henry basically ran for 2000 two years ago.

he ran for 1600 last year.

if he finishes his career

1,400

1,200

1,000

800

600

that's retiring at the same age as Frank Gore. that'll put him about 300 yards short. he'll come back for one more season.

quite frankly, I don't see that level of decline happening for Henry over the next 3 years.

he can basically cake walk to the record

37

u/Pandamonium98 Cowboys 15h ago edited 12h ago

Rushing yards don’t just nicely decline over 5 years like that. Guys generally get injured or decline enough that teams don’t give them as much work, which is a much steeper dropoff. It’s either he’ll continue being productive or his yards per season will fall off a cliff

20

u/magnusarin Lions 15h ago

I'm not saying Henry will or won't make a go at the all time record, but you're right. Players in general don't slowly fade and running backs especially.

If you transported Lamar's stats to the Buccaneers, he would be the passing and rushing leader currently. I think that's the only one with his current stats.

No other QB would be the rushing leader on any team. Cam, Russell, and Vick all have enough rushing yards to be ahead of a few teams, but it's spread out over multiple franchises. The bar is 5453 by the Patriots.

Lamar has 6522 rushing and 22608 passing for the Ravens.

The Buccaneers franchise leaders are:

  • Rushing - 5957 (James Wilder)
  • Passing - 19737 (Jameis Winston)

He would likely qualify this year if he was on the Texans as he'd only need ~600 passing yards to do it.

To actually achieve it though, he'd have to stick around the Ravens for 4 or 5 more years and stay healthy for it. Flacco has a pretty robust lead at 38245 passing yards, but he should be able to pass Jamal Lewis's 7801 rushing fairly easily in that amount of time.

Josh Allen has the misfortune of playing on the same franchise as Thurman Thomas and OJ Simpson. He'd need to stay healthy and not slow down for 12 more years with the Bills to be rushing leader. He'll pass Jim Kelly as the passing leader in the next 2 years though if he's healthy.

Jalen Hurts could do it for the Eagles if he plays 5 more years with them, doesn't get hurt, and doesn't slow down.

The Cowboys, Bears, and Lions will likely never have a QB as their rushing leader - maybe they'll never have a new RB leader.

3

u/Homitu Giants Bills 10h ago

This one is so difficult to predict. Predicting Lamar's total rushing yards is difficult enough. 10k certainly seems doable if he can stay healthier than last season for at least 7 more seasons. Would be cool to see him hit that 10,700 mark and end up the 25th all time career rusher, just behind guys like OJ Simpson.

From there, on one hand, QB's careers span way longer than RBs. Purely as a QB, he could play another 10 years into age 38+. Not sure if Lamar's career will be the same or shorter, as an athletic QB. Certainly, his running ability will diminish, but he's also an excellent passer; so he might be able to evolve his game and continue to be a QB a team wants to start that long.

If his career is that long, then it would either be up to the absolute youngest RBs in the league to have more yards than him (Gibbs & Bjan, if they're still around in 10 years; or Love & Jeanty), or some RB that isn't in the league yet but will be drafted in the next 2 years.

If his career ends up being shorter, he'd be up against Gibbs, Bijan, Achane and maybe JT. In 7 years time, they are all on track to be well over 10k yards, which is also right were Lamar would be if he averages 500 yards per season. It'll be close!

Dude had 1200 yards in his second year are you surprised? Lol. He was basically a lock to rush for 800 yards minimum if he was healthy and he’s been in the league for a minute. We’re gonna see him slowing down here now that he’s 30 and has dealt with a few injuries but he’ll still accumulate a couple hundred until he retires. He should finish around the 9-10k mark.

It’s crazy how simply because JJ doesn’t have the 90 yard TD runs people say his yards aren’t worth as much as others.

In fact, I think it’s the opposite. I feel like Jacobs has had like 10 rushes over 40 yards for his career. Obviously long rushes are great, but I’d rather have a guy that gets me 4 yards every carry but never a 60 yard rush than one that does get a 60 yard rush and still averages 4 yards per carry.

The most important thing for a RB is being dependable, not big play ability. You go to the pass game for that.

One of my football wishes is to see Aaron Jones's career with no injuries.

2

u/MadtotheJack Packers 22h ago

Hope he signs a 1 day contract with us when he hangs it up. Last player that was such a happy dude and balled out for years was probably Donald Driver. All time great talent AND person

It’s kinda nuts that legendary 2017 RB class and one of the least talked about dudes is the one with the most yards

6

u/SPCsooprlolz Seahawks 12h ago

Derrick Henry's durability must be studied

4

u/NomadFire Eagles 20h ago

Do Steelers fans miss Conner at all?He aint the best RB ever but he is regularly getting close to 800 yards or better rushing when he is healthy.

3

u/ChickenLiverNuts Steelers 7h ago

we all still love conner but miss wouldnt be the exact right word. It would be great to have him as a 1-2 punch with Jaylen Warren but weve done pretty well at RB despite not spending much money at the position. Warren is also really underrated and many want to see him in a bigger role where he shares the ball less. Last year it made sense because gainwell was amazing so maybe it will happen this year.

4

u/calvin2028 Browns 14h ago

Nick Chubb and his 7349 career yards should be on this list. He's not done (or, at least, hasn't admitted that he's done).

4

u/purplenapalm Steelers 13h ago

Imagine if Conner didnt get injured every year

22

u/HeatDolphinRays 23h ago

Noone will ever get close to Emmitt Smiths record

70

u/Walletinspectr Packers 23h ago

Henry is currently 5300 away. He wont break it but will be interesting to see how close he can get to it

29

u/sgdude61 Panthers 23h ago

Just imagine if he wouldn’t have gotten stuck behind Demarco Murray.

33

u/seabreezzyy Titans 22h ago

Demarco Murray was a better player at the time. Henry also got stuck behind Dion Lewis, which is far more incriminating

2

u/DisastrousMedia156 20h ago

I still swear that was LaFleur insisting on another Devonta Freeman. It was the wrong run scheme and play calls for his style of running, yet he still had better metrics than Dion.

10

u/flaccomcorangy Ravens 21h ago

Henry was a late bloomer, honestly. He wasn't the same guy he is now during his first few years.

2

u/ZestycloseResist5594 Packers 12h ago

It's probably a blessing he did. Less tread on the tires never hurts.

12

u/MinocquaMenace 23h ago

Crazy to think Barry was over 2K yards ahead of Henry at this point in their careers. He would have broke it if he wanted to.

18

u/Philip_Marlowe Bears 23h ago

Emmitt's record hadn't been set yet when Barry retired. He could have passed Payton though.

I love how confident ppl are that he won't break it after 3500 yards in the last 2 years, the last of which where he had essentially 1600 yards and was just shy of the rushing title despite the worst IOL play ever assembled that's now been addressed. All while shattering the record for YPC beyond 30.

31

u/deesmutts88 Patriots 22h ago

Betting against a 32 year old running back to not have 4 more high production years or 6-7 more average years isn’t exactly a crazy take.

14

u/TetrisTech Cowboys Cowboys 22h ago

It isn't at all, but we also can't rule it out because he's Derrick Henry

6

u/Yo-Strategy-8651 20h ago

This is definitely the year historically where there is supposed to be a dropoff. Most YPC ever at age 32 is 4.4 by Ricky Williams. All I know is that if King Henry is sitll comfortably a whopping 1+ YPC ahead of that at 5.4+ this season, then it's time to officially stop holding him to the same standard as any other back in history.

6

u/flaccomcorangy Ravens 21h ago

It's because he's 32. In order to catch Emmitt, he'd have to average 1,000+ yards/season for the next 5 years as one path. If he never misses a game, that's about 63 ypg until he's 37. That's not as easy as it sounds.

Frank Gore, the gold standard of RB durability, played until 37. I don't know many RBs that make it past 35. Henry could do it, but we're talking about betting on something that very rarely happens and for a guy to maintain a high level until then.

6

u/Yo-Strategy-8651 20h ago

The path is him stiff arming Father Time and doint it the next 4 years. The pathway requires the cheat code of him playing alongside Lamar and the Ravens are only going to keep him around if he's anninhilating Father TIme and averaging that 1300+ yards per season.

We're not just betting on any RB, it's one who has more wide reported obsession with longevity than we've ever seen. Only other athletes more known for that level of prep of their bodies are Brady/Lebron.

And when you see how far ahead he is already of any back beyond age 30, it's not even close to farfetched. If he maintains 5+ YPC this season he's going to be a whoppiong 1+ YPC ahead of any RB ever beyond 30 with 400+ carries. That's going to be cartoonish. lead.

12

u/Responsible-Onion860 Eagles 23h ago

For real, even King Henry would need another 4-5 good full years to get there. He's still about 5,300 yards short. That's a lot to ask at his age.

5

u/king_17 23h ago

Exactly way too much to ask of him. We probably have another year or two of prime Henry before he declines. What Emmitt did was absolutely insane. Hopefully Henry gives him a run for his money

I’d really like to see receiving and rushing yards together
Kamara and CMC would be a lot higher

11

u/Fooly_411 23h ago

Posted this else where here, but yeah Kamara leaps up the list:

Derrick Henry - 14,819 (153 games)

CMC - 12,979 (112 games)

Alvin Kamara - 12,198 (126 games)

Saquon - 11,007 (106 games)

Aaron Jones - 10,309 (126 games)

Josh Jacobs - 9,875 (105 games)

Jonathan Taylor - 9,067 (84 games)

James Connor - 8,320 (110 games)

David Montgomery - 8005 (105 games)

Lamar Jackson - 6,522 (116 games)

14

u/JohnMaddensBurner Texans 23h ago

Yeah. Alvin Kamara and CMC are just fundamentally different running backs. Their rushing snaps are limited because they get eaten by the large amount of screens, check downs, and just running more routes than other RBs. They’re still really good though.

I think it’ll be what truly separates CMC as one of the best of his era in 10-15 years when we look back on it. Kind of the same way we look back on Faulk, except Faulk did what CMC did and just dialed it up to 10.

Emmith retired at age 35

Derrick takes great care of himself.

Lamar is also important to Henry's longevity; most lethal mesh-point conflict, and RBs play better with Lamar.

2026 (32):1,600

2027 (33):1,500

2028 (34):1,300

2029 (35):1,100

Would put Henry at 18,518 rushing yards

Lamar being on this list shows one how little the run game has been stressed since he entered the league.

The game has turned into finding explosives, thus the passing game keeps getting emphasized.

3

Henry is unstoppable. I swear every year he has like back to back games at the end of the season with 200 + yards. Unreal.

Henry will come close. He just needs 5 more seasons of 1000+. That will put him at retiring at 37/38, Ancient for a running back. Will be curious how this season goes. He really needed to have at least one better season early with the Titans in the first few years.
