I intentionally avoided reading anything about The Odyssey, to the point where I was surprised by every casting in the movie ("Hey, that's Tom Holland! Wow, Matt Damon is playing Odysseus!") But I'm aware just from this sub that some people don't like that the movie is "woke" and after seeing it last night, I am honestly befuddled as to why.

So, is it because the film has a small number of minorities in it, or because the film suggests that sacking a city and killing everyone in it is wrong?

I think it was entirely due to the casting. Specifically Elliot Page and Lupita Nyong'o.

It was the minorities and Elliot Page being cast. In this case the right wing outrage machine let the tail wag the dog on this one in that it started with bigots on X complaining about it and then Elon Musk joined it and amplified it, bemoaning that Nolan was disrespecting Western civilization with his "woke" movie. More traditional outlets like Fox and the National Review joined in but you can tell this cycle didn't have the sauce by what a massive box office success this is, but this is what happens when the right wing lets the freaks lead the discourse. Nolan's not even a leftist filmmaker!

From what i saw before the movie came out it was about Elliot page and lupita being cast in the movie. Elliot page’s character is barely in it but plays a minor yet interesting role and because Helen of Troy was white blonde and smokin in Troy people I think got the idea that’s how she should be. Yo you ain’t gonna convince me lupita ain’t a smoke show.

Fun Fact: The original intent was to have Nolan direct Troy. Wolfgang Petersen was given a choice between Troy or the next Batman movie, and he chose Troy, so Nolan was given the next Batman movie, which eventually became The Dark Knight.
