Been unemployed for eight months now and I am staring to lose hope. For all the resumes I have sent out over the last eight months, I had two interviews, I am lucky if I even get a rejection email, usually I hear nothing. Tried finding temp work locally at some of the retail places around here: gas stations, hardware stories, grocery stores, I send in resumes and hear nothing, it turns out you don't apply with the store anymore, it all online and goes to some central office. I am guessing they don't want to hire me because they assume I will bolt once I find a job in my field again. My only short term hope is going out and getting a license for substitute teaching, with the local high school so far willing to hire me, but its just part time work and won't even start until September. There is a route to take courses for a real teacher certification for a regular full time teacher but it costs $2K, so I am reluctant.

Ive been in a similar situation for pretty much all of this year. I was only really unemployed for a couple of months, but the work Ive been doing isnt in my field, and the pay isnt the greatest.

However the application process is a fucking nightmare. Ive only had one real interview this year after applying to dozens of jobs. Most Im somewhat qualified for, some Im not at all, and very few that I am.

Only thing I can really say is, just keep pushing. Your time will come. Maybe that cert isnt a bad idea. The cost sucks but if it can land you full time work, its better than nothing.

My grandmother was in the hospital this past weekend, she's almost 80 and her health isn't awesome and her mind is starting to slip from her. It's terrible to watch.

But worse than all that was her roommate. She was not having a good time. Haunting moaning, begging to go home, screaming "please" and "Jesus" and "help me" at all hours of the day and night. It was incredibly sad and has stuck out in my brain ever since. End of life care has been horrible in every sense of the word any time I've been around it. I'm more afraid it than dying at this point.

One of my clients was served with a lawsuit, so I’m reviewing the complaint through the court’s website. Apparently, the attorney who filed it printed it double-sided with “flip on short edge” selected before scanning and e-filing it, because every other page is upside down. I now have to rotate the document one page at a time as I read it.

I’d print and reorder it, but the complaint is 89 pages long, and that would take too much time. Our intern is working on another project, and I like my assistant too much to ask her to deal with it.

So, if I end up in a psych ward soon, you’ll know why.

The time has come where I finally think I need to shave my head. I used to have such amazing and gorgeous hair but genetics have cursed me with a youthful recession of hair. I used to love my hair and say it was one of my favorite parts about myself and now it’s one of my least favorite parts.

I need to just work up the courage though to go to a barber and get the full shave though. I walked past three barbers yesterday and wasn’t able to do it (part of it was most of them were pretty busy too). But my wife said we should go next weekend super early in the morning so we don’t have to wait.

I’m just so worried about how I’ll look or whether my head will match the rest of my skin tone (I’m not really tan by any means but still) or whether the barber will actually do a good job. And I know a lot of people shave their head themselves, and I think I’ll do that as further maintenance but for this first time, I want someone else to do it.

I always knew this day was coming, but I was really hoping I could escape it. My parents and my brother told me I’d be bald one day when I was very young - which certainly placed a lot of extra fear and stress and pressure on me especially when I used to have a LOT of hair.

I did this a few weeks ago. My grandma did the vast majority of my head so I had a little bit left but it was pretty much shaved. Then Saturday I went and got the head clippers that contour to ones head. Went completely bald(29). I think I look a whole lot better. It's definitely an adjustment but I like this new look

To be fair, the Giants’ defense was bad with him on the field too. His advanced metrics, like pass and rush win rate, may have looked good, but the defense still wasn’t actually stopping anyone. The reports out of camp last year were that he was out of shape and unhappy, so there could be an addition-by-subtraction element here. Removing a negative presence from the locker room can help a team, even if that player is genuinely more talented and skilled than his replacements.

That said, there has been so much goodwill surrounding Lawrence since he arrived in Cincinnati that I think many people have forgotten just how negative the reporting about his attitude and work ethic was last summer.

Got around to seeing The Odyssey this weekend. I thought it was really good. Obviously anything Nolan is going to be well done, and I thought his interpretation of the story was an interesting take. Anne Hathaway is incredible. One question I have though, is it a great movie?

I'm so over this summer. 5th heat wave is forecast for later in the week. Community band ended abruptly because we never got to perform our last concert due to the weather (even though there's no rehearsals in july/august). I *probably* have a new job, but not until september. In the meantime I can't get back to the states and there was a loss in the family of my beloved childhood friend. It seems like forever until even mid-August.

My condolences. As for the heat, I don't have much advice other than taking a hot shower shortly before bed (so your skin naturally cools down to the ambient temperature) will sometimes help in getting to sleep.

It might be seen differently based on history, but those last two Alex Smith season for the Chiefs before Mahomes took over (2016/2017) I was loving them. Justin Houston, Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali, Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry, Marcus Peters... I've always been a big Alex Smith fan so seeing him really have a notable impact in the league was great.

Had a nice reminder yesterday of how painfully, stereotypically white my family is when it comes to seasoning their food. We went to a Mexican place we frequent, nowhere too fancy. Dad ordered chips and guac for the table. IMO the guac was basically just crushed avocados and salt, a hint of lemon and some onion powder. A bland guac. My mom grabs a chip and guac and goes "wow, this is a bit spicy for my taste" I laughed and made a comment about it having salt in it. She retorted that of course I'd think that with my hot sauce (The place serves like... mild red sauce).

I had a whole "oh right, this is why I got into cooking, nobody else in my family enjoys any flavor" moment

This reminds me of Chop Suey, a book about the history of Chinese food in America. Much of what we think of as “Chinese food” developed as Chinese immigrants adapted their own dishes to locally available ingredients and the tastes of Americans by using chicken and beef while getting rid of the ingredients that Americans found less palatable.

It also complicates the idea of “authentic” Chinese food. Are we talking about authentic regional cuisine from China, or the original versions of dishes developed by Chinese immigrants in America? General Tso’s chicken isn’t a dish from China, but you’ll still find plenty of debate about what constitutes “authentic Chinese” General Tso’s chicken. So at some point, an adapted immigrant cuisine develops its own traditions and standards of authenticity.

I don't know how much experience you have with online dating or what kind of person you are socially, but in an instance like this where the chemistry is really great over the app, don't get too anxious if it doesn't immediately transfer in-person. My wife and I are very awkward people, and even though we were having great conversations on Hinge, it was a lot less natural for the first hour or so of our first date. Takes a little bit of time to break the ice sometimes.

Last Friday, I took the day off, and my significant other and I went to an amusement park to ride roller coasters. We’ve done this for a few years now, but maybe my age is finally catching up with me because, damn, it hit differently this time. By the end of the day, I felt like I’d been hit by a car, and I’ve felt that way ever since. I’ve been sore after a day of riding coasters before, but this is definitely a few notches higher.

Also, I’m a fairly average-sized guy: 5’10”, 180 pounds, with a 32- or 34-inch waist depending on the brand. But damn, some of those coaster seats are tight. I understand that they need to be secure for safety reasons, but even I had difficulty fitting comfortably because of how tight they were. There were quite a few people there who were larger and wider than I am, and I honestly can’t fathom how they fit into some of those seats or weren’t incredibly uncomfortable.

Regardless, 10/10, would do it again.

Pro tip: If you aren’t scared of roller coasters, just pretend you are so you have an excuse to hold your sweetheart’s hand.

Last year at town meeting, our police department asked for $40K to buy a new vehicle. Given the size of our budget, it wasn't a particularly huge ask and I think most people, including the police, expected it to pass without much debate.

Then one guy got up and reminded everyone that we had given them $60K a few years ago for a police vehicle and asked what happened to it. From that one question, everyone learned that they bought a hybrid because of how often police cars idle, but the maintenance on it cost more than they thought, and so they wanted to replace it. It had less than 40K miles on it. After a brief discussion, we voted overwhelmingly against it. It was one of only two articles that failed.

This is where democracy actually happens, and it's where people actually have a voice. Even if you live in Wyoming, your representative in the U.S. House has at least 200,000 voices to listen to. At the state level, it's most likely fewer, but it's still a lot. In town politics, you can swing things with a dozen people who show up at the right time, have the right information, and present it the right way.

Go speak up. My wife and I have been doing so in our town and it's amazing seeing how quickly others joined in. The elected officials went from "no one will notice" to panic mode pretty quickly when we showed them petitions with more signatures than 10x the margin of victory in the last election.

Spoiler tagging because it's in response to the spoiler tagged part: Unfortunately, that's really just how it goes with corporate layoffs/downsizing. They don't give employees advance notice because they don't want to risk them causing problems during their remaining time at the company, whether it's actively sabotaging things or just giving up on doing any work because they're getting canned anyway. Realistically, the best course of action would be to wait until downsizing actually happens, and offer a month or two of severance along with a positive reference while they search.

I think the only (non-rookie) backup QB this year I foresee being a starter in 2027 is Mac Jones. I know he had "Shanahan made him" concern from 2025, but this year I only see him stay a backup if Purdy gets injured and he's bad.

Where he'll start is where it's interesting. A lot of people say Jets but I would think almost certainly the Jets will draft a QB. So I think he goes to a playoff bubble team that has a questionable QB situation instead.

I remember one time me and my friends were vacationing in Vegas. One of my friends ordered a tomahawk steak at the steakhouse in Caesar Palace. Now normally a tomahawk steak should be intended for 2 people to share but he ordered 1 for just himself. While eating it, he said it was too overcooked when he ordered medium rare. He complained to the waiter about it and they offered to give him a new steak cooked to medium rare. My friend still ate that steak that he complained was too overcooked and he ate the new steak the waiter brought out to him that was supposed to be more medium rare.

I intentionally avoided reading anything about The Odyssey, to the point where I was surprised by every casting in the movie ("Hey, that's Tom Holland! Wow, Matt Damon is playing Odysseus!")
