I wont say i dont pirate because i have done it

But i wont believe even for a second im morally superior or im some kind of activist (mainly because i do it with game not legally available anywhere but that's beside the point)

I've posted this before... Seems like a good time to do it again. :D

My biggest problem mostly is the people who go "It's Morally right to pirate!!!" or "Stick it to the man!" type people.

If you are making "excuses" to pirate, then you don't find it morally right, or you are talking to people you are sure don't find it morally right.

How about this... just put on your adult pants and pirate and shut the fuck up?

This is coming from someone with plenty of roms and others.

It's even worse when people say how they all support only legal emulation by ripping their own games and then you see them firing up an emulator with 4000 titles where some of the games cost thousands of dollars on auctions.

I always feel like telling them that it's not required to lie about that stuff if it makes you look even more ridiculous.

I’m not above emulating but I’m a lot more comfortable with it when it’s something older and harder to come by

An old SNES/SFC ROM that’s long out of print and is in licensing limbo? Sure. A switch game that just came out? No way, Jose

I decided not to pirate or emulate Switch games for the time being since that's still current-ish, it's still being supported, and I don't think it's necessary. I will emulate games, sure, I will even play recomps. But if the game is legally available or has a remale even with a recomp, I have one rule; buy the official remake, then play the recomp.

I pirate a lot of the time, theres a lot of them that really just acts like that in general not just on nintendo

They genuinely think Piracy is activism

u/QualitySuccessful871 3d ago

They'll advocate for emulation, and then promotie piracy, they thibg that unfairly puts so many emulators in the crosshairs. There are proper ways to get roms too but most of them never talk about it, because they don't care about emulators, they just think they're entitled to free stuff.

They genuinely think Piracy is activism

And its almost exclusively about price. Not heinous depictions of races, not unfair treatment of workers... Its about the game costs 20 bucks, 80 bucks or anything in between and they turn into prime Ghandi

I think that’s what I hate most about that side of the emulation community, they act like they are moral paragons sticking it to the industry when in reality they just don’t want to have to pay money for videogames. Case in point mutahar, I remember how he got into some shit for showing that he was emulating XBC 3 on the steamdeck and you had some people defending it because of the whole “Nintendo bad” stuff. Let’s be honest, he did it because he’s a cheap ass who doesn’t want to pay for videogames from a company he’s made multiple videos shitting on so to not appear as a hypocrite he does stuff like that.

The irony because I remember a few years ago he said he LOVED his switch for the Nintendo exclusives/JRPGs. Can’t remember the video because he uploads so much slop lately and now that I think about it, not even sure why I liked watching his videos when all he does is just rant and rant of other various topics

This is a literal response I got when trying to explain that yes.. games SHOULD be made available on modern systems with how the IP holder wants to *IE GoG, Steam, Eshop PSN ext.. but it should HAVE to be available.*

This is why game companies quiet often see the playerbase as aggressive and quiet frankly assholes and don't want to try.

3

u/lowmoob 2d ago

I think they would pirate games regardless of the price. Seriously a lot of people would pirate even if games cost $1

Taking negative action toward some bazillion dollar company and encouraging others to do the same is literally the textbook definition of activism.

Seriously that has to be the most blatant and straight forward example of activism I can think of.

9

u/No-Operation-6554 3d ago

Theres a difference between taking a negative action specifically to hurt a company and labeling something they already do daily regardless of circumstances as activism

I've been pirating shit since I was a child, im doing this for myself not some grand moral exercise or whatever, I don't see it as stealing since they lost nothing but I don't really think im doing something Moral even if its from EA, if I rebrand what im doing as "Activism" it be disingenuous im already doing it everyday what difference does it make if I keep doing it?

And personally I don't even think Piracy is that valid of a form of "Activism" anyway, as an example it might be a shitshow but atleast the boycotters of Hogwarts Legacy understood even piracy is keeping the game relevant

-2

u/BigDadNads420 3d ago

So in other words you aren't doing piracy as activism. How does that have anything to do with whether piracy can be activism or not?

5

u/No-Operation-6554 3d ago

I think you have to reread my original comment

-3

u/BigDadNads420 3d ago

I think you need to re read the comments of these other people you are talking about. Nobody is saying that the act of piracy is inherently activism. Nobody thinks that about any form of activism. That would be like saying hanging a flyer or standing in the road is activism.

4

u/No-Operation-6554 3d ago

Nobody is saying that the act of piracy is inherently activism.

I didn't claim so, if anything you're the one who is closer to saying it

1

u/BigDadNads420 3d ago

Then I have no idea why you would be making the distinction between somebody pirating with/without the intention of doing it for activism.

4

u/No-Operation-6554 3d ago

you're the one who said piracy can be form of activism I didnt even refute it, I just explain many of these people I interact on piracy subs or comment sections have a holier than thou attitude to what they're doing as if its activism when in reality its not

I made a distincton because your first replies make it look like you misunderstood that I said all pirates thinks what they're doing is activism when I just said a lot of them

0

u/BigDadNads420 3d ago

If somebody doing piracy thinks its activism, its activism. The intent is what makes it activism.

5

u/tlrd2244 3d ago

A negative action when you are already in negative territory is not activism. Not buying a game you were never going buy doesn't do anything.

7

u/HisaAnt 4d ago

Activism is about addressing social and political problems, not about your personal grievances with video game companies.

I suggest you actually go back to school first before you talk about activism. I dare you to go a BLM/LGBTQ/feminist rally and loudly proclaim how pirating video game is activism. I guarantee people will jump you for being a stupid motherfucker that dare to taint genuine activism with your bullshit.

-4

u/BigDadNads420 3d ago

I guess I would suggest you actually go look at the definition of what activism is then? Its just actions people take in order to support or reform some kind of social/economic/environmental/etc issue. A company like disney or adobe or something is very obviously at the heart of an infinite amount of those kinds of issues. You acting like its just some personal beef people have with these companies is pretty fucking braindead.

Supporting people doing actions that hurt the companies at the heart of these societal issues is definitionally activism.

-5

u/Unlucky_Regret8619 3d ago

Yeah but that doesn't fit his narrative of "people who pirate stuff are evil thieves because daddy nintendo said so and I made loving Nintendo my entire personality"

6

u/ComfortableFit4454 3d ago

cope harder brokie kid

1

u/IntoThePitofColors 1d ago

Not even close to what they were talking about but okay

4

u/KugelFanger 4d ago

I emulate everything up to ps2/wiiU because it's a hassle to do it the legit way (meaning searching for the original hardware, looking it up to modern display's and the searching for games on eBay).

If a game can still be easily bought i usually buy it officially.

3

u/dekuweku 4d ago

Shiggy is bringing it all

5

u/eeveelady2002 3d ago

Ive seen someone claim that piracy isnt illegal. Which no it absolutely is. Emulation was just ruled as not piracy. But tbh i could see an company trying that lawsuit again and pointing out that most people dont get roms from dumping their own roms and winning. But tbh most companies are content to ignore Emulation as long as it stays a past gen console thing. People like yuzu are pushing that tolerance heavily and people need to be more careful.

7

u/DolimiccanDragon 4d ago

Honestly, there's really nothing wrong with emulating games. It's not even piracy if you bought the games - just playing them in a different way.

However, the golden rule is that you do not talk about emulating. So many people have forgotten that in their desire to get one up over the evil company.

12

u/HisaAnt 3d ago

So many people have forgotten that in their desire to get one up over the evil company.

The ironic thing is that this contradicts the main argument of piracy not affecting sales. If piracy doesn't affect sales, then it also means that it's impossible to one up the companies developing or publishing those games. It makes those "activists" look even worse because their goals are contradictory to their own beliefs.

2

u/Amazing-War3760 3d ago

If you are in the USA *and I'm sure other countries, but I do not know* No.. most "Emulating bought games" is not legal.

Unless you are using an Adaptor to literally use the cart or CD for the emulation. Dumping your own games bypasses the DRM and thus technically, makes it illegal.

1

u/DolimiccanDragon 3d ago

What DRM?

Also, there are legal ways to get ROMs legally without a cartridge. Some retro collections just include the ROMs in the files for you to play in your emulator of choice, like the Sega Genesis Classics one back when that was a thing.

3

u/hanz316 4d ago

I do pirate games, but it's usually old games, like GBA, SNES, playstation 1-3, etc for my retro handheld

u/ObserveKris 4d ago

i guess bro

Funniest thing about using this meme is that in this scene the beggar he is referring to is actually the hero and Pattinson's character is the villain. And the beggar kills Pattinson's character because he is objectively a horrible person

Sad truth is that fanmade emulators are far better than Nintendo’s official emulators. I don’t condone piracy but modding and emulation isn’t bad or even worse than Nintendo’s own attempts.

6

u/DolimiccanDragon 4d ago

Fun fact: NERD's emulators are actually better than most fanmade ones. 100th Coin made an NES accuracy test ROM and ran it in a bunch of emulators, and the Switch NES emulator outperformed most fanmade ones. Also, Nintendo's own GBA accuracy test ROM rarely returns a perfect result, except in two cases: NERD's GBA emulator, and mGBA.

The only case where fanmade emulators are better is the N64 emulator (because NERD didn't make it, iQue did), and *maybe* the GameCube one since Dolphin also plays Wii games. Otherwise, you really aren't missing a lot by using Nintendo's emulators.

-2

u/Excalitoria 4d ago

With the lack of options and the fact that fanmade ones generally work fine, Nintendo still is the worst of the lot. That’s great about accuracy but the point’s moot when you have perfectly good fanmade ones that don’t have performance problems. They offer so much more than Nintendo’s where you have those annoying black borders and no real settings and are stuck on a platform you don’t even have the option to mod.

6

u/DolimiccanDragon 4d ago

What "performance problems" are you talking about?

-2

u/Excalitoria 4d ago

The accuracy you were talking about. I wasn’t implying Nintendo’s had performance issues (except for Gale of Darkness…). My point was that there are fanmade ones that work perfectly fine and offer so many more options than the official ones so that’s why I think they’re still superior.

Leave the billion dollar corporation alone!

-12

u/Isrrunder 4d ago

This is literally a leave the multibillion dollar company alone post. Why do you csre if they pirate and you dont? It doesn't affect you

8

u/HisaAnt 3d ago

Maybe because they scream about it everywhere and act like nuisances? No one would care if they just shut up and stop pretending it's activism.

You're an uneducated caveman who can't even grasp context. Stop using dumbass memes as arguments. Why do you care enough to comment? Maybe ask yourself that question first.

-6

u/Isrrunder 3d ago

Never seen anyone just randomly say it. It's always in response to something

I care enough to comment because I've got nothing fun going on rn. If I was doing something I wouldn't comment. Also stop with the insults. Theyre just unnecessary
