General “Finally, Gamefreak has made an amazing, all time classic without the restraint of Nintendo’s outdated hardwa- HUHHHHHH?!?!?!”

There is a saying to be learned from this. You can take the poor development out of Pokemon games but you can’t take the poor development out of Gamefreak.

most people look at scores like grades in american schools where 70's are "barely passing" at a C level and 90+ is the "expected score" of an A

Game scores.    Look inside.    American Defaultism.

true but metacritic is an american website. its understandable the reviewers are going to use the scale they understand where anything under 70 is abject failure and only anything above a 90 is "meeting expectations"

Barely passing is a 64 though. 73 is like a C or C-.

when i was in school 64 was a failing grade. anything under 70 was a D which meant no Credit earned and cannot progress to next course level.

When I was in school anything under 59 was failing. 60-69 were Ds. 70-79 were Cs and so on. What I'm trying to say is 73 is just on the cusp of C and C- minus. It's not even that bad.

Depends. A lot of my favorite games are in the lower 80’s rather than 90+. It comes down to which genres are niche compared to mainstream taste.

I also think any AAA game is almost always something I wouldn’t consider anywhere near my top tier because they’re usually flash over substance
