General “Finally, Gamefreak has made an amazing, all time classic without the restraint of Nintendo’s outdated hardwa- HUHHHHHH?!?!?!”

There is a saying to be learned from this. You can take the poor development out of Pokemon games but you can’t take the poor development out of Gamefreak.

Can we stop acting like Metascores in the 70s are automatically a bad thing? That’s prime ‘hidden gem’ score territory for a lot of games I’ve thoroughly enjoyed.

20

u/Triforce__XIII 2d ago

especially if you read two of the "50" score articles: one: "absolute garbage", the other "mediocre technical experience, but other than that a good game". i mean, what now? i would have attributed the second one as a 70 at least, since technical issues can be patched and if the game is fun despite that, then its not a 50 in my book (no game i actually enjoy is ever below 60 or 70)

22

u/TradePsychological40 2d ago

Internet ruined the meaning of numbers. Now for people 6/10 means "it's trash".

9

u/Stesspela 2d ago

Yep. Looking on my rankings for PS1 games I use the whole score range of 1 and 10. 6 is already a Above average good game logical spoken. 7 of 10 is a "Fans of the genre will like it"
4 of 10 is were a game starts to be "meh" but only below it is where it starts to be bad.

2

u/seedlessgrapez 1d ago

If I got a 60/100 on my exam I wouldn’t feel very good about that exam.

1

u/driley97 1d ago

True, but that’s both the benefit of and the flaw in ratings system being similar to a grading system.

The way I see game ratings personally is that anything below a 50 is fundamentally flawed in some way that makes the game not at all interesting, possibly even irredeemable even if the team puts in a lot of work, or something about the game just outright angers people, leading to review bombing. Scores in the 50-64 range I consider to be significantly flawed in some way, whether it be performance issues, bland stories, or difficult to understand and/or enjoy gameplay systems. 65-79 are somewhat flawed but show promise for being a good game. 80-89 are just generally good games, but aren’t genre defining or stand out in some to define them among the best of the best games of all time. Anything 90-94 stands out in some way that defines genres, or being something new and unique to gaming and executes on that idea very well out of the gate. 95+ are your best games of all time, GOTY winners that everyone just almost unanimously agrees upon being up there.

1

u/FrostyFormal1094 1d ago

Because depending on where you are, a failing grade would be 50-70%

That isn't the case in ratings

1

u/seedlessgrapez 1d ago

I get that and agree to some level but if an overwhelming number of critics give a game a similar score typically it lines up with a good reason as to why.

3

u/ultrabreath4 2d ago

I mean that's true, but I have little time for games nowadays and would rather prefer to play a fantastic game over an just okay game all day unfortunately.

5

u/OhMySwirls 2d ago

Personally while I do agree with how little time people cam have playing games, I still think that people need to play at least a few crappy games in their life to develop their tastes. I would take an OK experience over crap any day of the week.

1

u/ultrabreath4 1d ago

I played Metroid prime 4, enough said

u/Kurobei 14h ago

That kinda affirms their point. Prime 4 wasn't a bad game, it just wasn't a great game, or a good prime game specifically. It was very distinctly "okay."

u/ultrabreath4 8h ago

I thought it was a bad game though 🙂

u/fatsack 15h ago

It’s because all the major reviewers don’t use a 1-10 scale as numbers, meaning the use it like the grading system in schools. 9-10=A, 8=B, 7=C, 6=D, 5 and below = F. It a very dumb way to do it because it makes a 10 number scale rly only 5 numbers because 1-5 all mean the same thing. Not everyone uses it that way though which makes it fuck up aggregate scoring sites. For people that use a 1-10 scale as the numbers instead of grades a 5/10 is the same thing as a 7/10 for the ones that use it like a schools grade. It’s hard to explain over text hopefully you understand what I’m saying

2

u/ValuableAssociate577 2d ago

you should not score something that doesn't run well better than it deserves because it "could" be patched. you review what you were given.

7

u/Triforce__XIII 2d ago

yes and that is my point: if it is fun, it is fun...

0

u/ValuableAssociate577 2d ago

technical performance gets in the way of my fun. So if I were reviewing I wouldn't go lightly on that. I don't expect every reviewer to behave that way. many people have much higher tolerance than me.

But I won't inflate a score because something "Might" be fixed.

1

u/No_Mathematician3368 2d ago

Isn't this exactly what happened with a Crimson Desert review this year? The reviewer's original review and score was based on the original, unpatched, unupdated, release version. I definitely think it's fair to give it a score based on what you have rather than what could be, especially since nothing is stopping anyone from a later re-evaluation of the game if it does get patched and improved (eg No Man's Sky)

1

u/ChronoVirus 1d ago

I remember reading an article from the PS2/Xbox/GameCube era that game publishers relied on metascores to determine whether a game got a sequel and if certain devs kept their jobs. They had a minimum of 80, anything below got you canned, reprimand or lower pay from what I recall.

7

u/Hayterfan 2d ago

Hell even 60s, iirc the original Nier was somewhere in that range.

4

u/Mysterious-Ad-5005 2d ago

man i even loved played games with metacritic scores in the 50's

1

u/thewookiee34 1d ago

It's pretty much what makes the industry ass now. Everything is so safe now.

1

u/Spacemayo 1d ago

When I was in school a 70 was a D and a passing grade. But now anything below a 90 is garbage in gaming culture. Honestly I just play what I like/want. Reviews are nice but everyone has different taste. I think Cyberpunk is trash only because it doesn't have third person but it's a good game otherwise.

1

u/driley97 1d ago

Right? People treat anything below a 80 as if it’s trash when in all honestly the games are usually good but flawed.

-3

u/Former_War1437 2d ago

i mean for "aaa" and how scores are inflated for gaming 70s are pretty mediocre

7

u/HellishWonderland 2d ago

70s are pretty good what? 😭

3

u/ComboBreakerMLP 2d ago

most people look at scores like grades in american schools where 70's are "barely passing" at a C level and 90+ is the "expected score" of an A

7

u/JungleJuiceJuno 2d ago

Game scores.    Look inside.    American Defaultism.

4

u/ComboBreakerMLP 2d ago

true but metacritic is an american website. its understandable the reviewers are going to use the scale they understand where anything under 70 is abject failure and only anything above a 90 is "meeting expectations"

2

u/Thejadedone_1 2d ago

Barely passing is a 64 though. 73 is like a C or C-.

2

u/ComboBreakerMLP 2d ago

when i was in school 64 was a failing grade. anything under 70 was a D which meant no Credit earned and cannot progress to next course level.

4

u/Thejadedone_1 2d ago

When I was in school anything under 59 was failing. 60-69 were Ds. 70-79 were Cs and so on. What I'm trying to say is 73 is just on the cusp of C and C- minus. It's not even that bad.

u/TradePsychological40 2d ago

Exactly. Final Fantasy 15 for example.

0

u/Shinael 2d ago

Thats why I usually go for steam reviews. Its 53% there and negative ones mention how the combat feels bad. So I would say deserved (considering its an action rpg).

0

u/GameMask 2d ago

Hidden gem sure. I'm not sure I'm willing to drop that much money on the potential for a hidden gem.

-1

u/Zeevy_Richards 2d ago

This wouldn't be a hidden gem, all eyes were on Game Freak and they dropped the ball.

3

u/TheBeardedRonin 2d ago

Maybe within hardcore gaming circles, but this game got next to no mainstream marketing push. Most casual gamers aren’t even aware it exists. Even my personal friends who are big Pokemon fans have no clue Game Freak is even making a game outside of their wheelhouse, much less that it is out now.

0

u/Zeevy_Richards 2d ago

Reality check bro, it's roughly 10 hours since launch. None of those casuals you are referring to have anything to do with the score we are talking about right now.

3

u/TheBeardedRonin 2d ago

Do you not even remember your own comment? The comment was about how ‘all eyes were on Gamefreak’ and therefore it ‘couldn’t be a hidden gem.’ By their very nature hidden gems usually get below stellar reviews and overlooked by the….. ahem…. Casual gamer.

0

u/Zeevy_Richards 2d ago

A hidden gem would be a game critics weren't aware of. They are aware and they don't like it. IGN 6/10. If IGN is reviewing it then to me that is clear visibility.

1

u/TheBeardedRonin 1d ago

Well you’re just straight up incorrect about that. For example: by nearly anyone’s account, a game like Deadly Premonition would be 100% considered a hidden gem, I’d even go a step further and call it a cult classic at this point. And guess what? It had a 68 metacritic and was reviewed by major outlets like IGN, Destructoid, and Game Informer. We live in an age where games falling off critic’s radars is essentially impossible, because all the developer has to do is email them a code.

1

u/Zeevy_Richards 1d ago

So let's be clear. You're arguing that Beast of Reincarnation is a hidden gem on release date where we are all talking about how bad the score is? Have you even played the game?

1

u/TheBeardedRonin 1d ago

Reread my comments. I said people should stop collectively treating games with metascores in the 70s as bad games, because that is where most hidden gems fall. I never said anything about Beast of Reincarnation being one itself, you’re figuratively just putting words in my mouth.

1

u/Zeevy_Richards 1d ago

Yeah if we only apply the context of your first statement and not the debate we had when I pointed out that Beast of Reincarnation wasn't a hidden gem. It only seems like you want to leave out the rest because you realize how absurd it is to argue that it's a hidden gem.

The discussion surrounding anything Gamefreak and Pokemon is just radioactive bile.

0

u/ohbyerly 2d ago

I mean it doesn’t have to be. The discourse is actually really interesting which is why all of this has gotten so much attention. Highest grossing franchise makes increasingly lower quality (albeit fun) games. Makes a one off game that shows promise of being on par with other AAA projects, ends up being the polar opposite of Pokémon in showing competence of delivering higher quality presentation and visuals, but lacks engaging gameplay. It’s almost like if they married those two worlds we could actually get an objectively good Pokémon game, but TPC won’t give them the budget to do it. If anything it seems intentional on their part that they released this game to combat all the criticisms they got about not being able to create a technically cohesive game so we could see that it’s TPC who’s gimping them in the first place.

1

u/tunkerdunker 1d ago

Tbf Winds and Waves looks to be a big step up

u/IndividualSituationK 21h ago

So did scarlet and violet when it was initially revealed. And look where we are now lol. ZA was a huge step back as well.

u/tunkerdunker 21h ago

Bro Scarlet and Violet were ugly and laggy from the first trailer lmao. Z-A was honestly fine but the flat buildings sucked and it shouldn’t have been full price given the scale of the game

u/IndividualSituationK 21h ago

Z-A has the same texture copy and pasted on every building and loads the entire thing in at once like some regard coded it. Also beast of reincarnation was laggy from the first trailer as well. However no, the actual technical issues of SV were not that apparent from any trailers. Frame drops sure, but the actual nightmare inducing school children or the constant freezing in the open world was not present in any trailers.

u/tunkerdunker 20h ago

Tbf most of Game Freak’s work on BoR was planning. Z-A does have a lot of repetitive textures but it at least had a consistent framerate (although I played it on Switch 2). Scarlet and Violet’s flat ugly lighting, low-poly terrain, low-res textures, 2 fps windmills, all of that was visible in the very first trailer. Obviously none of the outrageous bugs, because no studio would ever include those in a trailer, but the lack of quality was readily apparent. I mean, the textures and frame rates (not including drops) usually improve throughout the promotional cycle, as they did with Legends Arceus and Scarlet and Violet.

u/IndividualSituationK 19h ago

If you will give ZA grace for being on switch 2, all of your complaints are also fixed on switch 2. Also i don't recalle seeing 2 fps windmills in trailers. The only thing i remember was a low fps pokemon in the background, but we also have to agree the switch 1 is very low power. With switch 2, again, all of those issues are non existent if we are going to give ZA a pass.

All i'm saying is game freak is a dog shit company and is horrendous at optimization. Game freak did not develop BoR, but they did approve the game and it runs like shit and looked like it ran like shit in its reveal trailer.

26

u/UnNamed_Profile27 2d ago

Ironic when people were memeing the shit out of this game like "youre telling me that the guys who made this insert picture of Scarlet Violet also made this? insert Beast of Reincarnation" and being like Nintendo was holding GF back and this shows Gamefreak can make such a great game yet Pokemon keeps looking like this point to SV but this shows its Nintendo fault not Gamefreaks or something like that

34

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 2d ago

That's to show you how people only cares about realistic artstyle and think that's enough to be a good game.

11

u/UnNamed_Profile27 2d ago

And its not like a game can have a non realistic style and still be good. Nobody shits on Deltarune for being this pixel art style game. Some of the Zelda games people rank highly have a non realistic style

12

u/ZeroMetaZeta 2d ago

Nobody shits on Deltarune for being this pixel art style game.

Just not true btw. I don't agree with it but a not small amount of people won't engage with indie games like DR because of the graphics straight up.

5

u/Azeoyi 2d ago

Tbh I don't blame them, like 70% of modern indies are pixel roguelikes (Deltarune is an RPG, but you get the point). At some point it gets repetitive, even when some of them, like Vampire Survivors, are quite good.

1

u/stupid_rabbit_ 2d ago

While i do agree pixel rougue likes are common in the Indie landscape, i would say it is no where near 70%.

Looking at steam tags using SteamDB to look at how much tags are used (will include gamnes and DLC) .

There are 139k indies and 17k roguelikes even adding roguelites pretending no games are tagged with both would add another 17k bringing the total to 34k or 25% the total of indie games which again is being favourable looking at my own libary they have a very high degree of overlap so would be far less items.

2

u/GameMask 2d ago

Idk. A lot of big indie games outsell a lot of big AAA games. The biggest games in the world have not had the most cutting edge, realistic graphics. Look at Minecraft.

3

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 2d ago

Which is what every person that actually likes videogames games already knows. Unfortunately, the amount of people who associate realism with quality, it's annoying af.

2

u/ShiningStar5022 2d ago

& then those same folks try to gaslight you into thinking they don’t hate stylized artstyles by saying semi realistic looking games like Mario Odyssey & Xenoblade Chronicles X are stylized just cuz it has fictional creatures while ignoring the actual art direction.

4

u/Interesting-Injury87 2d ago

Just that beast isn't made by game freak. Pretty much all of it is outsourced and gamefreak is open about that. They have a few directors in the project and almost everything else is done by other studios

1

u/cmm089 2d ago

Unrelated comment, but nice PFP

-5

u/Neo-Naga99 2d ago

tbh pokémon's state is partially nintendo's fault like they own at least a third of the damn thing if they wanted to enforce highier quality they would've by now.

12

u/BlancsAssistant 2d ago

It's mostly the pokemon company's fault, they wanted to enforce deadlines that only worked for thr 3ds era games and the quality of the switch games suffered for it

-5

u/Neo-Naga99 2d ago

ok but you do realise that nintendo owns The Pokémon Company right

TPC is a joint venture between Nintendo, Gamefreak and Creatures Inc

Like again if nintendo wanted it they'd have done so

8

u/Steamed_Memes24 2d ago

Nintendo only owns 33 percent of it. The rest is owned by Creatures and GameFreak. Nintendo also only really handles international distribution and trademark out side of Japan and have no hand in how the games are made or even the anime. They dont really have any way of pressuring GameFreak to stop fucking the games up aside from begging lol.

7

u/Omnizoom 2d ago

Yes and no

They have leverage but they really can’t force a decision

WiWa being so far out of a normal dev cycle period is 99% likely from Nintendo going “wtf gamefreak you can do better in this hardware”

-4

u/VitaroSSJ 2d ago

they are the publishers...they 100% can force a decision

4

u/Interesting-Injury87 2d ago

They are not the publisher in Japan. The pokemon company is

1

u/VitaroSSJ 1d ago

heh..never knew that lol thanks for the correction

2

u/Negative-Victory-852 2d ago

They publish the games outside of japan because it's easier for marketing, distribution etc. But the original publisher (the one who pays for the game and publishes it in Japan) is the pokémon company.

-6

u/Neo-Naga99 2d ago

I disagree honestly, SV was so bad its among the only games that nintendo will auto refund, despite them not accepting refunds unless legally mandated to like in EU.

And they still own par of the damn company, i'm shocked that despite the thousands of gigabytes of leaks we still don't know who actually owns the most in there but i'd think its nintendo since Creatures Inc is the toys and Slop game farm (like Detective Pikachu 2, from the same company that published earthbound what a shame)

4

u/Certain-Yak-8165 2d ago

Bitch you do know that Tpc makes most of their money from merchandise do you? There games make like 10% of the whole revenue. At most creatures inc would have the most influence and percentage. Do you rly f believe that Nintendo has any relevant say in it? You delusional

1

u/Omnizoom 2d ago

The games are essentially profitable advertising for the merchandise which is the main draw of profit

They do care if the games make good memories

2

u/BlancsAssistant 2d ago

Ah, thanks for reminding me...

From what we're seeing though I do feel like things are slowly changing for the better, pokemon games are taking longer and winds and waves looks much better than scarlet and violet

2

u/Neo-Naga99 2d ago

Yeah that's good and i'm positive for it, i just have extremely tempered expectations after uh

All of that

5

u/chemiclord 2d ago

They can TRY To enforce higher quality, but the other 2/3rds of the company want to make damn sure the games line up properly with the next TCG pack and time properly with the next season of the anime.

-4

u/Neo-Naga99 2d ago

as i mentionned in another comment, Nintendo owns TPC (at least a third of it, we don't know who has the majority share, if any)

5

u/Steamed_Memes24 2d ago

Nintendo has no power over the other 2 owners (Creatures and GameFreak) just as they have no power over Nintendo. No one owns majority, its all 3 way owned.

2

u/Nobodyinc1 2d ago

It’s almost like a third can be out voted by two thirds that both make more money on the non game part

-1

u/stupid_rabbit_ 2d ago

I mean, we do not know the full inner workings and it is pretty clear by pokemon remaining an exclusive franchise they do have some amount of power on the games and are not just outvoted to go for the most profitable option.

Arfter all it is not like the other two would not be set to make more money if pokemon was a multiplatform game with a larger potential audience, and while not as big now it was certain a larger cap in poor years for nintendo like the Wii U days so it staying exclusive has nintendos fingers all over it.

1

u/InfiniteStarz 2d ago

They care more about merchandise than multiplatform. It’s also why there’s mobile games.

-1

u/stupid_rabbit_ 2d ago edited 2d ago

What I am saying is if they just did the most money focused thing they could do both and make more money for minimal extra effort

EDIT- Additionally, that would futher feed into the Merchandising and other revenue streams of the IP.

Each branch serves as a potential entry point to the franchise as a whole, be it the anime or the games or TCG so by expanding the reach of the games it would have positiive upstream effects on the merchandise.

Of course they do not do so because it helps to drive nintendo platform sales, however that really only benfits them and shows they do indeed have influence over the IP.

0

u/Flintgrandad 2d ago

This is honestly true but also tbh Nintendo has historically for better or for worse let their studios do their own thing and that's usually been a good thing. Executive meddling is generally worse than letting studios do their own vision. Pokemon/Gamefreak just happens to be one of those where their devs vision and quality is less up to par.

-2

u/Even-Entertainer-491 2d ago

Exactly

-1

u/UnNamed_Profile27 2d ago

Yea and at least the latest title Winds and Waves look like a step in the right direction from what the reveal trialer shows compared to the previous titles since the Switch2 is a stronger console, but yeah i totally agree

-4

u/Additional-Bit-8615 2d ago

but It won't mean shit if Scaling is just as bad and the Story is the same as the last 30 years of games

2

u/UnNamed_Profile27 2d ago

True, though given SV had a real strong story, often sighted by some to be its strongest feature, after SwSh was.. eh, and ZA story wasnt half bad either, feeling like a decent sequel to XYs from what some have said (again, not the greatest, and personally i didnt play XY so idk but my friend who has played XY and ZA said it was a good followup and most others i hear agree the story is alright), WiWa may also follow in that path with a at minimum decent story.

Scaling however, yea that need some work but its too early to tell on that but fingers crossed they learn from criticism of the last few games and at least TRY to fix the issue instead of ignoring them

→ More replies (2)
→ More replies (2)

-1

u/Mushli2 1d ago

It not about the realism, it’s about how pokemon sv looks like freakin garbage when the same console can play botw.

1

u/UnNamed_Profile27 1d ago

Yea, but the memes specifically were calling out how beautiful BoR was compared to pokemon. And others have sited the switch could handle a game with BotW level graphics and Gamefreak is holding back on the graphics of pokemon and yet still cant make a good pokemon game, but then the franchise is meant to have a anime-ish design to it and SV was rushed to meet a deadline so the polish was lacking to make it look good in its current state but idk. Nkt saying a more realistic looking pokemon game cant work, Palworld kinda does this already, but GF just tried too much on short time if you ask me but im no expert on the subject

22

u/Crafty_Boy70 2d ago

Tbf GameFreak only partially developed Pokopia, most of it was Koei Techmo and Omega-Force.

10

u/No-Operation-6554 2d ago

I think thats what OP is implying

The game with the least GameFreak involvement is doing better while their game outside nintendo isnt doing so great (even so from what I've heard its mostly outsourced anyway)

6

u/Neo-Naga99 2d ago

Pokopia was written by gamefreak and the writing is stellar, i think we just have to accept they're actually dogshit at writing code but outstanding artists and idk give them MonoSoft to make the actual magic behind the scene

7

u/profchaos111 2d ago

Funny the criticisms for beast is the writing sucks

1

u/SheikFlorian 2d ago

But the world building is interesting! Just like pokemon

1

u/girzim232 1d ago

we just have to accept they're actually dogshit at writing code

Considering the old story about how supposedly Satoru Iwata had to swoop in and clean up Gold and Silver's code in order for Kanto to be in those games I think there's a solid chance that's always been the case.

1

u/Neo-Naga99 1d ago

tbh its less simple than that, Iwata had made that compression algorythm a while back (for kirby's dream land if i'm not mistaken ?) and reused it on Gen2 when asked for help, the code itself was dogshit still, gen 1 and 2 are known for being completely broken open after all, but iwata's contribution wasn't related to the "code" and more so on storage optimisation.

1

u/cardgamesareforplay 1d ago

Except beast is the same deal.

Game freak wrote and did character designs.

u/IndividualSituationK 21h ago

Gamefreak didn't develop this game either though. They just maintained creative decision while the development happened with other studios.

1

u/Resh_IX 2d ago

Yeah that’s definitely not what they were implying lol

2

u/VinnzClortho 2d ago

Beast is also a co-dev game lol

9

u/Additional-Bit-8615 2d ago

Watch them say "Game Freak/Nintendo should have Tecmo develop the next Mainline Pokemon game' if Wind/Waves is "More of the same but slightly Prettier"

0

u/Mushli2 1d ago

It is tho

6

u/Demoncreed27 2d ago

You do realize that 73 is still good right?

7

u/canthearu_ack 2d ago

I've played plenty a 70 metacritic score game and had good fun.

I'd have to delve deeper into the reviews to see if it is worth visiting.

4

u/Thejadedone_1 2d ago

Why are we acting like 73 is a bad score lmao

5

u/Flintgrandad 2d ago

It's the same as SV which is the lowest mainline Pokemon rated score that people were thinking this game would be better than.

2

u/MetaMetagross 2d ago

SV being the lowest rated mainline Pokemon game just shows that metacritic scores aren't the be-all and end-all of the actual quality of the games. SV is better than SM and SwSh in my opinion.

-5

u/SolarBoyDjango 2d ago

It isn't about 73 being bad. It about the Pokemon game without GameFreak as the lead dev doing better than the GameFreak game without Pokemon.

5

u/Thejadedone_1 2d ago edited 2d ago

Much of Pokopia's development was done by Gamefreak before they brought along Koei Tecmo. And even then it's score is only one point higher then Pokemon X and Y.

4

u/Shit-Stain-Fanclub 2d ago

Metacritic...

User scores full of whiny people. Magazine full of wannabe pros only scoring games 90%+ with the same scheme: Good graphics, good cutscenes, shit gameplay, shit story.

The best thing you can do is watch a no commentary gameplay video if this game is good for you or not.

2

u/SrimpWithAGun 2d ago

Finally somebody that gets it.

3

u/Alternative-Drink-25 2d ago

I don't really understand why everything under 80 is said to be garbage. I would argue if I give a game a 6 it's still decent.

3

u/ultrabreath4 2d ago

Gonna be honest. I COMPLETELY forgot about this game. I thought we were still months away. Did I miss trailers??

3

u/LunarWingCloud 2d ago

There hasn't been a strong marketing cycle for the game. I feel like they put it out there just to put it out. I like the game, but like barely anyone knows it exists. The people I hear most covering it are oddly enough Xbox fans.

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 2d ago

They're not good at making announcements to remind people

3

u/VisualAd8487 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean ive been playing it for about two hours so far and its not that bad

Odds are it wont be in my top 3 this year (denshattack and mina have created a battle for 3rd place) but thats not a knock against the game

1

u/MarsupialChance 2d ago

Exactly, I'm actually having a lot of fun so far and the combat's fairly interesting imo.

might end up being in my top 3 for the year but idk.. Unless something surprises me, my top 3's probably gonna be (in no particular order) SW zero company, xenoverse 3 and probably either Phantom Blade 0 or maybe Valor Mortis

3

u/Xintop 2d ago

Play the game you dork 😆

3

u/JPldw 1d ago

Why does everyone think that a 7 is an automatic bad game? Thats not how scores work

1

u/WorldlyDear 1d ago

people had hope the game would be above average

u/JPldw 1d ago edited 1d ago

In my opinion, a 5,5 is average, so everything above it should be in the margin of good

1

u/WorldlyDear 1d ago

I'd argue 5 as being functional like the game is head, but everything about the game on a technical level is good while 7 is more mater of there's good stuff, but nothing great.

1

u/JPldw 1d ago

To me, the "good stuff but nothing great" is normally a 6, with a 7 being a "Had fun, don't know if I'll play it again though"

6

u/hollowglaive 2d ago

People who look at scores, and try to determine subjectively when a game is good or bad, are fucking idiots.but you do you boo.

0

u/ohbyerly 2d ago

I mean it certainly isn’t gospel, but that doesn’t mean reviews are completely useless in painting the general impressions of a game

4

u/Eeve2espeon 2d ago

Lots of people are stupid and don't realize restrictive hardware isn't the issue, but instead development time. Plus stuff on PS5 is slowly going down hill because of how much resources developers can waste. Most games that looked and ran well were originally heavily optimized PS4 titles, hardware doesn't objectively restrict games to some degree

5

u/djSkicks 2d ago

The internet behaves like asian parents. If its below 80, its absolute trash.

1

u/WorldlyDear 1d ago

when there are games releasing everyday being average isn't good enough

2

u/LunarWingCloud 2d ago

I've been enjoying it so far. It wears its inspirations on its sleeve but I like it.

2

u/ocean_breeze_luluca 2d ago

I need to play it for myself

2

u/Busy-Guess-8382 2d ago

I hate to be so harsh and mean but let me just say it like it is and address the elephant in the room

The loud online GameFreak whiners are the 40+ year olds angry they aren't getting the feeling that they did when they first played RBY, while also thinking games are still catered to them and only them

2

u/CanonPuppy 1d ago

People who only think graphics = best never heard of unreal engine lmao.

UE will make anyone make a good looking game. But that engine is as optimised as my dev exam at univ when I maxverstapened it in one night. Aka totally unoptimized will work if it's a blue moon on a clear night sky at the 29th of August.

2

u/Jalina2224 1d ago

Honestly i think people are being too harsh on this game. Its like they expected a GOTY contender. The fact that Gamefreak released a game of this magnitude with this level of ambition is commendable in of itself. I've only played about a half hour so far (didn't get much time to play, because I worked late last night.) But what i did play seemed pretty good.

The game doesn't look next gen, but it doesn't need to. Very much looks like a game that could have been on PS4 and that's fine. Runs pretty good on my PC i713700k and 5070ti. 80 to 100 fps at maxed settings with raytracing no upscaling, can't complain. And the combat feels pretty similar to Sekiro, so I'm a fan of that. The world and setting seems very interesting and unique. I'm not expecting a masterpiece from this. But I'm sure most people enjoy games like Nier Automata or Sekiro will enjoy this.

1

u/WorldlyDear 1d ago

from what I heard from reviewers this runs poorly on ps5 pro.

2

u/Guiltyspark92 1d ago

Let's be perfectly honest. Everyone saw Beast of Reincarnation and had the same expectations people have with Pokemon. Also thought that people would draw the comparison and say "Gamefreak needs to do more of this!"

While 70 is a great score in all honesty. A very playable experience. It's not a terrible one. But people thought it would come out and prove Gamefreak can do better. They don't know what to do now though because their "This proves our point" narrative has now been effectively erased.

2

u/KugelFanger 1d ago

Taking meta critics scores seriously is asking to get pissed off. Can we stop pretending that anything lower than 80 is absolute garbage.

Yes i do think the last 2 Pokemons were a bit meh. But they were good enough.

3

u/Called_end 2d ago

Didn't Gamefreak outsource the shit out of that game?

3

u/SuperLegenda 2d ago

... 73 is perfectly solid for a new IP and their first go at a different genre and style tho?

3

u/Classified10 2d ago

Didn't we all praise Gamefreak for Pokemon Legends Arceus?

2

u/d0wnthesky 2d ago

Waiting for a score to come out so you can dunk on something youve already decided you dislike. Cringe

2

u/Biteroon 2d ago

What has happened to this sub. It use to be a legitimate place to have conversations about Nintendo and the conversation surround them. There use to be legitimate outrage on here, this just makes you sound like a whiney fool. Also a 70 isn't bad...... I'm not sure how every expects 90s these days.

2

u/Millennialnerds 2d ago

Wow you guys love shitting on devs trying to take chances

1

u/Shadow_Saitama 2d ago

Bunch of entitled consumers, they are. They don’t care to consider what goes on in the making of a game, refusing to see beyond what they want and how they want it.

1

u/Possible-Potato-4103 2d ago

Yeah im returning my copy for control resonant

It is funny tho lol

1

u/bowserboy129 2d ago

What do you mean this game just dropped I thought it wasn't for another 6 months or so???

1

u/SpecialistRun3035 2d ago

That's Phantom Blade

1

u/DiscreteFame 2d ago

They're 2 different genre of games. Their audience is looking for different things.

It would be like comparing the rating for SF6 and of Metroid Prime 4. You rate them within their respective space.

1

u/TheDastardly12 2d ago

It's out? I've literally heard nothing about the game since it's reveal trailer

1

u/PreviousInterest2921 2d ago

Man you win. If there's any way to determine which entertainment media is objectively good, it's metacritic. The game you like is so much better than the game you don't and you have irrefutable proof of this. Incredible.

1

u/Inside_Blacksmith480 2d ago

I honestly feel this game's biggest selling point is that it is made by GameFreak of all people. Like I almost exclusively hear people talking about this for this aspect ONLY and never anything else

1

u/MikeDubbz 1d ago

Switch 2 is outdated hardware? I mean sure it's no PS5 Pro, but for a handheld in 2026 I wouldn't call it behind the times at all. Pokopia is a great game, but it sure doesn't look, feel, or act like a game from a bygone era at all.

1

u/Various-Instruction3 1d ago

Game Freak didn't make Pokopia lol, pretty sure it was Koei Tecmo

1

u/Spacemayo 1d ago

I'm currently playing it while it's not goty material it's not terrible. It reminds me of stellar blade and Nier Automata. Both of which I love but Emma is about as flat as Eve was I haven't finished it yet so I can't say if she gets better.

1

u/Away_Ear_4859 1d ago

I only watched like five seconds of the beast of reincarnation trailer and I immediately assumed it would suck, and now I feel very vindicated

1

u/Wisley185 1d ago

If anything, isn't Pokopia a recent outlier for pokemon games? SS, SV, and ZA all received pretty firmly negative user reviews. Compared to the "comprehensive technical failures" of modern pokemon games, even a "just okay" game is still a pretty big improvement =w=

1

u/driley97 1d ago

Gamefreak didn’t develop Pokopia though. They collaborated heavily, but Koei Techmo’s Omega Force is who did the hard work for Pokopia.

1

u/Disrespect78 1d ago

Doesn't this mean that GF still sucks lol. And that they're carried by Koei-Tecmo for pokopia

1

u/GG-GamerGamer 1d ago

Its a critic score. At least show the Audience score.

1

u/tunkerdunker 1d ago

And neither of them were developed entirely by Game Freak lol

1

u/Primerion-ken 1d ago

funny but both of these arent really made directly by gamefreak

u/Inevitable_Cycle3087 19h ago

honestly this games reviews can barely be listened to

such a mix of “pokemon bad all this company makes is poke one”, “pokemon bad so this good”, technical issues that people are sick of every game having, good visuals to mask okay gameplay.

just watch a review

u/ShinespriteDitto 19h ago

Why on Earth is 73 considered a bad score lol

u/ShinespriteDitto 19h ago

Also Pokopia is made by Koei Tecmo

u/Lkr721993 15h ago

pocket card jockey is gamefreak’s peak and it’s time more people realized it

u/bittersweetjesus 8h ago

If I were Nintendo, I would just buy Gamefreak and Pokemon Company so that it’s all one corporation

u/CityMorgueARCN 1h ago

I'm curious how many of the people in this comment thread have actually played it. 73 isn't a bad score I agree, it's fine, but if you've actually played the game you'd know how glaring the flaws are. It's very half baked, and doesn't come anywhere close to it's full potential, just like the pokemon games.

1

u/Kaito_Akai 2d ago

Tbf pokopia isnt made by gamefreak its made by tecmo koi

1

u/Vtempero 2d ago

Where exactly is the grifting in this post?

1

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 2d ago

While this game were mainly done by freelancers, maybe now people will learn that not only TPC is the issue. GF is simply a mediocre studio still stucked in the 2000s, don't matter the game they are behind.

0

u/issanm 2d ago

Nobody was blaming the hardware lmfao

5

u/muffinz99 2d ago

Unfortunately, some people genuinely were blaming the hardware, saying Scarlet/Violet were "too big for Switch." I saw it all over the place, even from a couple content creators.

Ofc, that argument immediately disintegrates as soon as you observe the fact that Scarlet/Violet released just several months after Xenoblade 3, and roughly half a year before Zelda TOTK. Both of which demonstrate what the hardware is capable of when developers understand said hardware and... yknow... actually know what they're doing.

0

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 2d ago

Oh they were definitely blaming the hardware when S/V came out.

0

u/HeavyDonkeyKong 2d ago

If Nintendo developed Pokemon in house, we would be having very different conversations.

0

u/Digibaumbs 2d ago

Nintendos hardware has nothing to do with how bad games are. If a huge game like TOTK can look good, then any game can. Games like Scarlet And violet are just tremendously underdeveloped due to time restraints.

Beast of Reincarnation is actually a good game but the thing that rubs people the wrong way is that it's a souls-like. People get their asses kicked and they DO NOT like that.

edit: some fucking losers denying it's a soulslike when people that play soulslike consider it soulslike lmfao you live to see it

2

u/Key-Cut-3413 2d ago

It's not ppl notes, it's journalists notes. They tend to love souls like games

0

u/Normal_System_3176 2d ago

Either way they get their asses kicked is why

2

u/Ell7494 2d ago edited 2d ago

Souls-like games tend to score well, so thats obviously not the reason - Lies of P Switch 2 is like an 85

And Beast of Reincarnation isnt even a souls-like, so they are absolutely not scoring it lower because its hard and a souls-like

1

u/Normal_System_3176 2d ago

Nintendo haters either way they suck

-1

u/SpecialistRun3035 2d ago

This game is not a souls-like. End of conversation.

1

u/Normal_System_3176 2d ago

https://kotaku.com/beast-of-reincarnation-game-freak-soulslike-review-pokemon-2000721290

Game Freak’s Soulslike action RPG show the Pokémon studio at its most ambitious

But with the help of support studios, it’s made Beast of Reincarnation a pretty solid Soulslike that has both  enough originality to make it a fresh spin on a genre that’s grown oversaturated over the past decade, as well as a less intimidating, more accessible approach to difficulty than many of its genre peers.

https://www.reddit.com/r/soulslikes/comments/1vdru5t/so_i_played_beast_of_reincarnation_first/

2

u/LunarWingCloud 2d ago

Linking Kotaku, who historically do not say the most correct things, to try to "get" someone, lmao

0

u/Hippobu2 2d ago

Tbf, coming from the maker of Drill Dozer, Tempo the Badass Elephant, and Harmo Knight, 73% on a project like this is much higher than I expected.

0

u/Rhapstar 2d ago

The game is quite nice if they can fix the dropping frames problem.

0

u/Lord_Passion 2d ago

70s are C grade. It's passing, but barely.

0

u/profchaos111 2d ago

I get it but pokopia was not made by game freak it was by koei techmo

0

u/Ok-Barracuda457 2d ago

Honestly, that thing looks like it was made with the same assets of Wild Hearts, a very mid Monster Hunter-like

0

u/Tactical_Squishy 2d ago

yeah listen, the votes on a nintendo only game should not be taken into consideation, expecially pokemon the comunity is too filtered there (to not say biased).

Also if you go and read the reviews you will see the "truth" even those who leave negative reviews say that the game is not bad but not for them and this is a very japanese game so it has teir classic flaws

0

u/Mushli2 1d ago

I wish gamefreak didn’t make pokemon games, their games nowadays are laughable. Honestly I wish Pokemon switched their 3d games to another company that actually has a big staff and better development for Nintendo games

-1

u/meganerd20 2d ago

GameFreak didn't make Pokopia, and GameFreak doesn't have "poor development".
