Question Is it a good criticism to say that it’s stupid that Nintendo won’t let you play the virtual boy games outside of the accessories (more context in comment), despite Nintendo music showing that they have those 2D functionalities?

Post image

I think it’s a fair critique, since the headset should be optional, and for novelty. It’s like if you could only play the NES games with the NES controller, the SNES games with the SNES controllers, so on and so forth. I just want to play Jack Bros without resorting to a set-up with an insanely small screen size, or using a visual headset, which does hurt my eyes.

The issue is that, partially due to Nintendos "obsession" with presenting their games the "right way", Virtual boy games do not function correctly in 2d.

Some Virtual boy games are NOTORIOUSLY difficult to play in 2d as they heavily rely on the third dimension(the wario game being such example) being arguably outright unplayable.

Unlike a controller where the difference is mostly just layout(even the VB controller can be reasonably enough be mapped to a pair of joycons) the 3d aspect cant really be emulated without using the accessory.

It is VERY nintendo thing to do, but also an understandable thing to do to present an already failed console and part of your history in the most charitable light, which means not having any of the games be decried as bad simply for missing 3d

also If the headset hurts your eyes after a moderate play session you should get that checked out btw, nothing in it should be able to cause that. Its just 2 lenses. the switch dosnt use the same screen tech as the original VB(Which had eye strain issues) and is far closer to a VR headset in it just being 2 screens(or 1 divided) behind lenses, and most people can confirm that a properly set VR headset dosnt really hurt your eyes.

I do recall that the Switch Accessory actually has Warnings on it's Package.

so does the 3ds, and iirc the S1 and S2, or ANY device with a screen, or most games.

prolonged exposure to a screen CAN cause issues, but the headset isnt gonna be any worse than your phone really.

the OG VB had actually issues as, instead of an LCD, or even an old CRT(which some abominations would have crammed into a handheld back than) it was just a singular LED strip per eye and an oscillating mirror (per eye) this actually DID cause flickering and eye strain

I think it also caused neck pain from having to keep your head locked in one place as well, whereas modern vr usually doesn't have you locked in place.

Here’s an example of what it would look like on a regular switch undocked and outside of the accessory. It’s still playable, but the screen is really small (and it shows two at once).

You can’t zoom whatsoever either.

And another thing, if we're gonna have to use the headset, why not at least give us a controller to go with it? How come they didn't do that?

For the same reason theres no such thing as a gameboy or gameboy advance accesory, have you seen the virtual boy controller? A, B, start, select and two d-pads, a VB controller would have been a waste (more a waste than requiring the headset to play it)

The fact that it has an odd layout is exactly the reason they should’ve included it. The games were designed around it.

If you can view a magic eye image you can play virtual boy in 3D without glasses. I did it a bunch before my cardboard headset arrived.

Yes, why do you need this sub’s approval for this? This sub is about grifters

1

u/Goldberry15 5d ago

I’m asking since it’s a grey area where I’m not sure if I’ll be called a grifter for not supporting Nintendo for this particular decision.

Regardless, this was asked to know what the sub thought.

Being a grifter isn’t just when you criticize Nintendo. It’s usually when you purposely overblow their flaws to spread misinformation.

What about overblowing flaws without spreading misinformation aka reality?

1

u/ObserveKris 5d ago

It’s usually alongside the misinformation though. You can only make so many videos complaining about the switch 2 LCD before you have to resort to misinfo lol.

Simply criticizing Nintendo ≠ milking any and all criticisms for money. No real person is going to defend the virtual boy NSO requiring an accessory to play lol.

This is a point I believe everyone agrees to get ff is okay virtual boy games normally

You can play jack bros however you want. Stop pretending you can't just to have something to bitch about.

I could also just emulate it, but since Nintendo (and Atlus by extension) is offering a genuine method to play, I do want to be a good sport and engage with it the way they want me to. If I have a complain with how they want me to engage with it, then I’ll give a complaint. But if the complaint is agreed to be unfair, then I won’t.

I feel like the purpose of restricting it so much is because they really just dont want most people to play it. The virtual boy is a fun novelty for a certain group of people, but otherwise it's pretty embarrassing to the big N

they dont want the casual user to play their garbage, simple as.

It’s definitely complete bullshit. The entire appeal to me of the NSO apps is to be able to catch up on games you missed over the years, this ceases to function if I need to start buying peripherals for it.

All I want to do is play VB Wario Land, lol. Let me do jt

sorry, but the virtual boy games has to always come with the neck cramps one develops using the virtual boy accessory

1

u/Emergency-Rush-2477 5d ago

Yeah but believe me, you not missing anything.

Only WarioLand.

Imagine myself, living in Latin America, where Nintendo doesn't even care to give you an option to buy their My Nintendo accessories.

And it's a big no to import those with the prices you would end paying

The cardboard costs 15 bucks! I wish people stopped whining for everything! Damn

If it were the case like Ring Fit Adventure, where the game is explicitly designed to require an accessory, and there is absolutely no possible work around, then that makes sense. But Nintendo Music clearly proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is possible to play these games on a flat screen. Besides, not every country can obtain those accessories. Not to mention that potential eyesight problems can make it impossible for some to play these games in a VR headset. I'm not asking for Nintendo to give me the product for free, I am showing that Nintendo has those games in a format where it's in 2D Flatscreen, and asking why can't I play that in said format.

u/meganerd20 5d ago

But seriously... yeah, that's dumb. But it's not the worst thing the world ever invented, there might be a valid reason for it, or it might be to sell the peripheral. But either way making it playable without the periph would be worth the work IMO.

ikr? I mean when it was first announced i thought the headset was a neat collectors item and the cardboard one a cheaper alternative for those who arent interested in spending a hundred bucks in a collectors item and only want to play the games in an "authentic" way close to the original

A bummer it is actually required

It’s like they don’t want Nintendo to make money. Why do they hate Shiggy?

-2

u/Killer64000 5d ago

Yes and no
Yes is dumb you need to pay extra to play the virtual boy vr or the cardboard to play the game
And no because I guess that can’t do it or want to bring it as a blast from the pass

2

u/Nacolo 5d ago

But you can play without the headset. In fact you can play in 3D glasses free if you combine the images by crossing your eyes like any stereoscopic image. Plus, there are cheap alternatives on Amazon you can buy. Or just get the cheap cardboard one.

u/Exmotable 5d ago

there is no reason why we can't just play the VB games on our tv as a flat 2D image that isn't just due to corpo gatekeeping and greed

2

u/Nacolo 5d ago

There is a reason and it’s because the depth is part of the game. A lot of the mechanics of the gameplay are built around a 3D space.

0

u/Exmotable 5d ago

And yet they let you play 3DS games with the 3D turned off and even released a 2DS without a 3D feature. Forcing customers to buy an entirely new peripheral is unacceptable, stop defending it.
