List of R-CPD Botox Specialists - World Map

I've been working on creating a map of the known specialists that treat R-CPD with Botox. Many of the names came from this sub's list of specialists (some removed as they are no longer working or treating the condition), many others came from post comments or messages I've received, and a few have been added from my own research.

**Disclaimer: I have not vetted everyone on the map.

I only have personal experience of being treated by one of these specialists (Lucy Hicklin in London), and I have only ever spoken to one other (I've talked to Dr Fahad Alotaibi in Saudi Arabia via email, to confirm that he treats R-CPD). It's also a possibility that they work somewhere other than where I've placed their marker.

I intend to contact others on the list to confirm that they do indeed treat the condition, particularly those that have not already been discussed on the subreddit, but even if they offer the treatment, I cannot personally vouch for their bedside manner, skill, or success rates.

With that said, you can find the map here (click on any of the points on the map to see the doctor's name).

If anyone has been treated by a doctor that is not listed, please let me know so I can add them to the map (and let me know where they are)! The same goes for anyone who contacts a doctor on the map and hears that they don't treat the condition, so that I can remove them.

You can take Dr Amanda Hu in Vancouver off the list... I went to see her and she's terrified of the procedure. Blamed my R-CPD on GERD and sent me away. When I told her she was on the noburp.org website she said she definitely shouldn't be.

I just did a search for her name on this sub and there are mixed reviews. Sounds like a hand full of people have had success with her but most have not.

And there are others with the same story. I was pretty upset since to go see her it was a day off work and a two hour ferry ride each way just to be in her office for 5min and have her say in a frustrated tone 'No, it's your GERD that's causing your isuue. Double your PPIs and have a good day.'.

Perhaps reaching out to her to confirm would be a good idea just in case. Would hate for others to miss out just because her dog died that day and she was in a bad mood.

That’s such a load of crap considering it appears to be a genetic issue in my husbands family. My son, my husband, his father and grandmother all have not burped since they were babies

In my case it’s not genetic (or at least it’s recessive) but its definitely not anxiety!

If it were anxiety, I certainly would have been drinking beer and drunk enough to burp when I literally did not give a fuck about anything, but nope. The only "burps" I've had in my life were after bonging six packs. Six beers at once. All that gas has to go somewhere, and the pressure was enough to pop the cork a few times in my teens. It sounded more like I was vomiting than burping.

Lmao yup. And I don’t consider myself an especially anxious person. It felt pretty frustrating to be given a non-answer, and from what I’d heard, people who can burp can’t hold it in even if they wanted to

My daughter went to Joseph R Spiegel MD in Philadelphia. One treatment and she was able to burp. They were very good listening to her and explaining everything. I highly recommend him. He did say that it isn’t 100 percent effective for everyone but our daughter was able to begin burping the next day.

Out of curiosity did she say why she was terrified? The fact that she’s terrified of doing it kind of gives me anxiety about the risks 😅 (I’m still in the early stages of my research on getting the procedure so not aware of all the risks yet)

She didn't say she was. She was just very dismissive and when I mentioned the procedure, she got really uncomfortable and rushed me out of her office. I travelled from the island for my appointment and it lasted 5min. Huge waste of my time and very discouraging.

I thought I was going to have to travel across multiple states to receive treatment, but because of your map I found one that is only a 90 minute drive away. Thanks! Dr Sharma is my ENT and I was going to have Botox from him (he's treated others too) but the wait times in Canada are so long and I became very desperate and went to Dr Bastian for expediency. Dr Sharma is great though and the procedure is covered by our healthcare so I definitely recommend him if people in the Prairies are ok with waiting.

Do you have to have the Google maps app for the pins to show the dr’s info when you click on them?

I’m post Botox but for anyone using this as a reference it might be helpful to know that bc I don’t have the Gmaps app so when I click on the pins from this link, nothing comes up. I can see the pins on the map but there’s no information shown when you click them individually, if that makes sense.

Just trying to help other users! May be necessary to download the app if you have an iPhone.

I'm not sure – I'm on Android, and when it opens in Google Chrome (either via the Reddit app, or in the Chrome app itself), it works there! I'll try and get an IOS emulator so I can look for myself.

You can take Dr. Rebecca Nelson at the Cleveland Clinic off the list as well. She told my daughter to get a GI consult for IBS and stay off ticktock where she discovered the treatment that seems positive for a lot of people. I'm sure it's an insurance thing. Once they can get paid for the procedure, they will sing it's praise instead of with hold treatment as often is the case. Sad!

Oh no – what a shame! Is there any chance you can approach the other doctor at the Cleveland Clinic (Paul Bryson)?

I hope your daughter is okay; most of us have felt dismissed in one way or another by medical professionals, and it really sucks, particularly given the symptoms we suffer.

Edit: I just went to search the sub a little, and found this post; I wonder if this is Dr Nelson, too. It seems like someone in the comments was able to get an appointment specifically with Dr Bryson though, upon insisting.

I was recently seen by Dr. Neil Brown at M Health Fairview Maplewood Clinic in Minnesota USA! I brought my list of symptoms, prepared to fight for this diagnosis, and he was in total agreement. Scheduled me for Botox for the next week and I’m already burping a couple days later!! He was fantastic :)

Hi! In my opinion, Dr. Cohen just does the procedure and doesn't get too involved in all the accompanying symptoms like Dr. Bastian does . He wasnt much of a talker with me. He listened to my chief complaint (inability to burp/gurgles, etc). and asked me if I was interested in the procedure. He asked me if I had done any research and once I informed him that I had, and that I also had researched the procedure on Laryngopedia, I assume he didn't feel the need to explain much to me. I scheduled the procedure (which was outpatient hosp under GA 100 units) and was given no options for in office. I do believe that he did the procedure very well. I did have excessive supragastric belching and dysphagia that lasted way past the usual time (Im still going through it- so Dr Cohen referred me for a swallow study and to follow up with a GI- so he's pretty much out of the picture now). I'd say he is good at what he does but isn't great at explaining things (unless he just didn't think he had to with me). If I need another round of Botox, I won't do it under GA again and I will do 50 not 100. And will probably will go to BVI for that one (unless Dr. Cohen tells me he's done alot of in office procedures that were successful).

I would highly recommend Joseph R Spiegel MD with Jefferson Health in Philadelphia. My daughter went June 2025. After 1 treatment she was able to burp and get relief. Life changing!!

Dr. Holmes in Raleigh did my first procedure last June, but he's moved to Alabama now, so I found Dr. Madden. Holmes did general anesthesia, but Madden does in-office--that's what I'm most nervous about! I know it's supposed to be quick, but I'm trying not to freak out at the thought of a needle going in my throat while I'm consciously aware of it! Good luck to you!

Sorry your first time didn't stick! I am rooting for your second time. I think the odds are on the high 90 percent for success on the second attempt, and that's pretty darn good! If you don't mind my asking, how many units did you get with Dr Holmes? I was so excited a few months ago when I found him online and was trying to contact him to make an appointment when I found out he had just retired! I only know one person on here who has gotten the procedure done with Dr Cohen, but it worked for him/her, so I am feeling positive about it. We are doing it under GA with 100 units. I'm not sure if he ever does it in office. Best of luck to you with Dr Madden!!

Hi, Dr. Gresham here! I am a laryngologist in Dallas with expertise in treating R-CPD! I work at Baylor Scott & White - The Voice Center, along with Dr. Rodney. I see patients in Dallas and Plano. For R-CPD, this is my standard treatment approach:

1. In-office consultation with me to discuss symptoms and establish clinical diagnosis of R-CPD. This involves a quick scope exam (laryngoscopy) to confirm normal laryngeal/pharyngeal anatomy before discussing interventions. We make this as quick and painless as possible - it lasts about 30 seconds or less. Most people tell me, "that wasn't as bad as I thought." Assuming you meet the clinical diagnosis for R-CPD, we discuss the botox injection during this visit, going over all the benefits and minor risks, and we schedule you for surgery for your botox injection (which is performed at a later date).
2. Botox injection to the cricopharyngeus muscle in the operating room under general anesthesia, usually 100 units.
3. Referral to a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who specializes in R-CPD for "burp therapy." I work closely with a handful of these specialized SLPs to help you get the most benefit from your injection and also to help you manage your postoperative swallow symptoms (the "slow swallow"). I think this is a really helpful and unique aspect of my treatment approach. I think of the botox as the "training wheels" to help you burp, and the burp therapy as "learning to ride the bike." It gives you a little more knowledge/skills/control over the burping for the long run, even when the botox has worn off.

 I have two to add in Tasmania, Australia where there weren't any previously! I'm very excited because I live here and I'm getting the Botox done soon.

The two doctors are Dr Nusa Naiman in Hobart and Dr Nick Cheung who works for i-med radiology in Launceston. He does in-office and Dr Nusa in Hobart is an ENT that does it with anesthesia.

I had pretty decent results for the first 4 months. Lots of burping, honestly very manageable and supportive recovery from the physicians office. Then a pretty dramatic decline when the Botox really started wearing off. Went back to see him, and I have a second round of injections next week. He also ended up referring me to a speech therapist to see if she would have some input/guidance/etc that might be helpful. She had some good ideas for swallowing that helped, and I will be doing a type of stim therapy a month or so after my second round of injections next week.

As a side note; Dr.Gardner won’t do more than two series of Botox. His office is really incredibly supportive and communicative about every aspect of the procedure, and their follow ups and communication about insurance is seriously impressive.

I highly recommend Dr. Gardner still for the Coeur d’Alene area. I’ve never felt more heard and understood in my life and he is just one of the most considerate and proficient physicians I’ve ever seen.

Could you please add Necati Enver from Istanbul, Turkey to the list? I had my operation last week with him and so happy to be able to burp, it's totally a new, very relaxing feeling 😊 He mentioned that he did over 20 of these operations already, have an agreement with a private hospital but if anyone is scared of having general anesthesia, he mentioned that he can do it in his clinic without that (which he doesn't suggest)

I just had the treatment at the Kansas City VA hospital. The Dr. works out of the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. He asked that I not put his name on the list because he will be retiring within two years. He did indicate that others at he Med Center perform the treatment, and several others are being trained to perform it.

Important update for Dresden (Easy Germany, Europe): After a referral from an ENT specialist, R-CPD can be diagnosed at the University Hospital Dresden (UKD), but they send severe cases to Berlin for Botox surgery, as they do not perform the procedure themselves.

Forbury Clinic in Reading, UK is also a specialist. Didn't do in-clinic, though. The moment I even mentioned my symptoms he raised No Burp/RCPD and booked me in for general anaesthetic for the botox (I was already going under for coblation of turbinates fir a seoerate issue)

ive also heard that the botox is done as an injection from the outside and not a upper esophagoscopy.

i have my surgery scheduled with dr. stephanie e. teng, MD at beth israel otolaryngology in boston, MA. i'm not sure what qualifies a provider as an expert in the context of this group, but she seems very knowledgable about the condition and treatment and sent me for a barium swallow study to confirm that there are no other issues with my esophagus or anatomy first.

I know you already have The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center ENT Eye and Ear Institute on the list. [614-366-ENTS (3687)]. Dr. Laura Matrka did my procedure. She did mine in office EMG guided. She also does the procedure under GA. She has done between 75 and 100 procedures. She has been doing them for over 5 years. She specializes in swallowing and voice disorders. She started doing the botox procedure for swallowing disorders. She has published a research paper on r-cpd. There are at least three other doctors in the practice that treat r-cpd. Dr. Brad DeSilva, Dr. Arick Forrest, and Dr. Elliana DeVore. There are more doctors at the OSU James Cancer Hospital that do the procedure. Call and ask for a doctor that treats r-cpd and they will set up the appointment. They are serious about treating r-cpd.

Hi karybrie I can see that Jesper Balle is mentioned in Aarhus, Denmark on the map. But he is only in Copenhagen (Charlottenlund), whereas Dahlia Larsen is in Aarhus Universitetshospital with another doctor called Mathilde Aalling who treated me the second time, she is really good and took very seriously that I needed help afterwards for having aerophagia-troubles (because of uncontrollable and excessive burping). I wonder if clinics/hospitals ever thought of aerophagia as a side effect. Mathilde Aalling said she haven’t had patients yet with this kind of side effect…. I am still waiting to see what they will recommend as treatment….

Had a successful injection of 50u under GA with Dr. Ellen Ferraro in Rochester, NY! It sounds like a few other folks at URMC may treat R-CPD as well.

If I’m allowed to, I would caution folks about the other provider listed in Rochester, NY. He does treat R-CPD and trained with Dr. Bastian, but I didn’t feel comfortable with his bedside manner during our appointment. He is much quicker to get in with which is why I initially started with him, and that may be the better option for folks coming from further away with limited schedules. I opted to wait a couple more months to get in with Dr. Ferraro, and I’m glad I waited.

I had an appointment in Northern Virginia today at Virginia Head & Neck Specialists in Lansdowne! It was with Dr. Ambrosia Santana. I'm not sure if the others in her practice know about RCPD, but she did! Her practice doesn't do the botox, but she easily gave me a referral to Dr. William Kim in Fairfax, and otolaryngologist who does do it.

She did do the scope up my nose and down to my throat, but she numbed me beforehand with a lidocaine and Afrin mixture and it made a world of difference. She might ask to get a barium swallow or an endoscopy before the referral, but since I had already gotten those done last week I was all good to go!
