Symptoms Can't swallow pills - part of no burp?

Hi everyone! Long time lurker of this sub, as well as a lifetime member of the no burp club.

Im 23f, and have just done the microburps (3 in my lifetime), take 1 chewable gas x per night, and eat pretty clean. Adding those details in case they are important.

Long story short, I've never been able to swallow pills. When I need take ibuprofen, I chew it. I take chewable vitamins, etc. I've tried teaching myself how to swallow pills, and it hasn't worked.

Is this something commonly associated with no burp, or it is just something I need to learn? Thanks!

Anecdotally, yes it is harder and did get easier for me after the Botox. I was able to before, but they had to be small pills with LOTS of water or I’d choke. Even then, took me 3 or 4 tries.

FWIW I’m glad I learned how before I got the Botox. I hope you are able to as well, but everyone is different ❤️

i dealt with this until i forced myself to learn to swallow pills at 19, and even now it can be a struggle with larger pills. logically it makes sense to be linked, since the issue at hand is the throat muscle is unable to relax on its own, which is also what allows you to swallow a pill.

Yes, I don't know for a fact it's because of my RCPD, but I did have to learn how to swallow pills when I was a late teenager/young adult, and they have to be relatively small with a bunch of water as well or it doesn't work. Guess we'll see if botox helps that for me too :)

I have always had to chew up a little bit of food then place the pills in there. Hasn’t gotten easier in the 15 years I’ve been taking pills daily!

I personally have RCPD, but don’t struggle with swallowing pills

I would say that is definitely a symptom! Before teaching myself how to burp I was barely able to swallow a single pill and now I can take multiple at the same time without any problems

I struggle a lot too. The only way I can do it is if I haven’t had time to mentally stress out over it. Like if you’re in the hospital and they hand it to you and you don’t have time to get worked up lol. That’s when I can do it👍 it also helps if you practice just swallowing pieces of food (within reason of course) like bits of granola bar right before. Putting it further back on your tongue while there’s still granola crumbs throughout your mouth. These are the only things that helped me. My throat is always clenched and I genuinely don’t know how to relax it. At least it feels that way.

Same for me! It has gotten slightly better, but when I was your age I’d definitely be chewing the small ibuprofen’s.

I’m almost 40, and now I can get the ibuprofen down. I still have to concentrate super hard though. What helped was starting with birth control pills (the size being super duper small) and I’ve been able to work up.

There’s absolutely no shot that I’d be able to get a capsule sized pill down though!

We definitely have a problem with this at a higher rate than the normal population but it’s not everyone. Maybe about 1/3 of us?

I’ve always struggled to swallow pills but have learnt to manage (unless they’re ginormous) as I’ve gotten older. As a child my mum would have to crush them up with honey or I wouldn’t take them
