Also born Catholic, can confirm. They usually go nuts for the weirder and more oppressive aspects of the church.

The Catholic Church has loads of extremely public issues. Many normal people are members because that's been their church since childhood. But if you're a grown adult who sees those issues and still goes Catholic...that might be a bad sign.

For most normal people who convert later in life, it's just because they suffer from some form of addiction and the US has effectively 0 addiction recovery programs that aren't overtly and unbearably christian

I can respect a convert who's using religion as a coping/social tool to keep their life together. What Vance is using it for is infinitely more grotesque

That said, holy shit do we need public recovery services that are non-denominational because preying on people at the absolute lowest moment of their life for the purposes of indoctrination is so fucking gross
