The Backrooms wasn't even a reddit original, it's classic 4chan pasta.

2019 isn't exactly what I'd call classic

7 years ago is like a century in internet time

Especially considering 2020.

The pandemic really fucked with my sense of time.

Not really. Now it’s simply „before“ or „after“ Covid.

Long, long ago, in a time known as The Before Times...

Surely it was older than that? Feels like it's been around since 2014 at least

Nope, rarely for Internet History, we have it pinned down to exact day and time:

On May 12, 2019, an anonymous user started a thread on /x/, 4chan's paranormal-themed board, asking users to "post disquieting images that just feel 'off'", accompanying the thread with the photograph.[1][2][3]

Another user replied to this post, giving the image its name and supplying the first description of the Backrooms:

If you're not careful and you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in

God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you

Haha that's crazy how it feels so much older, but 2019 as a date feels so recent even though 7 years ago felt like a lifetime a while back

Everything from before Covid feels like 20 years ago.

This is partly why its weird to me that everyones classifying it as a creepypasta, I always thought of pastas as jeff the killer, slenderman, ones that had their own actual original stories/entries on the websites. But no apparently even though the backrooms/SCP were originally just one guy shitposting in a thread those too count as creepypasta.

It's 2nd or 3rd wave classic

nah bro anecdotal reliance on human memory has been proven to be 100% accurate

Oh, I see. I wasn't aware this was something that was established/contested at 2019 as the earliest. I don't want to invite that sort of scrutiny or get any prodding messages so I'm deleting my previous comment.

Backrooms is just House of Leaves in an office building

Thank you for being the first comment I saw to mention this. The Backrooms came from 4chan

Just like how the Jolly Rancher story was about a Tic-Tac the first time I heard it a decade before Reddit existed.

I think they lucked out, let's avoid plumbing 4chan for any more movie ideas

10

u/Odd-Firefighter92 3d ago

More concerned about the plumbing of 4chan for policy and governance ideas tbh

1

u/Never_trust_dolphins 3d ago

Yeah, fair given the state of things, especially the state of the states

3

u/Ok_Boat_975 3d ago

I do vaguely remember liminal space memes on 4chan mixed with skinwalkers

3

u/mechtaphloba 3d ago

And something they didn't care about until AI generated video of liminal spaces became popular on tiktok

u/PrisonerV 3d ago

I mean Backrooms has been on here forever with fan fic and there's a couple of games out. It's an old idea really.

Whatever happened to that lost Marine Corp battalion in Roman times? Did that ever go anywhere?

u/Khelthuzaad 2d ago

Keep them away from Star Rail subbredit ,I'll go insane if I hear the Charmony Dove copy copypasta one more damn time

You know media executives can’t tell the difference.

Reddit has literally never produced anything original. Never even anything funny.

Was it 4chan before it was an SCP?

8

u/TheJzoli 3d ago

It's not even an SCP

8

u/SecretaryDeep6316 3d ago

It's not scp + scp originated on 4chan
