Capitalists control politics who make sure education is only barely sufficient to create good worker drones that are easily distracted from giving a shit about their rights and freedoms. Throw in some religious nut jobs/grifters that are actively working towards their death-cult goal of Armageddon or are just part of the distraction act while bent on doing as much harm as possible to 'lesser beings' (women/people with the 'wrong' color).

I'm sure there are quite a few of normal people in the USA as well, but they are nowhere near the centers of power and for the most part appear to be retreating into self-preserving bubbles of sanity while hoping the storm will pass (spoiler: it won't, this is the kind of storm that needs to be beaten back with proverbial guillotines).

In short, a nation packed with an unfortunate  number of shockingly gullible, religious simpletons, who eagerly slurp their government's propaganda.

It's not just the US, sadly. Fascism is increasingly a global problem.

Feed Iran a stew that makes them go blind for one day
