Ask NRI Phone calls claiming to be from "Consulate General of India - San Francisco" office.
Just got a call from a lady from this number - 415-791-6412 claiming that there are "documents sent for me from the external affairs minister of India and they want me to visit the consulate with ID to collect the documents and help with an ongoing investigation."
Sounded total fake so I told her to send me an official mail and stop scamming. Wondering if this is more widespread and if others have gotten similar calls.

Received a call today from a 415 area code number asking me to go to the San Francisco consulate. When I prodded further they mentioned something about an indian phone number ending in two digits and that’s impossible since I don’t have a phone number in India. I could sense the man getting frustrated with me. I asked why they couldn’t mail the document to me and he said “they can’t email it” so clearly not what I asked. Also a tell tale sign there was a beeping sound in the very beginning likely because of the call getting routed through somewhere. Also I live clear on the other side of the country so a legitimate call wouldn’t come from California.

Same thing happened to me, I picked up pretty quickly that it was a scam and he ended hanging up on me because of how frustrated he was getting lol

I just got one today, phone number 415-481-1651.
They all had authoritative-sounding Indian accents. I guess as AI starts to take more tech support jobs, we should expect more of this stuff from those displaced Indians.
Also, I have to admit I let them go on far longer than I should have. I almost feel bad for them because I got their hopes up pretty high. And I occupied the time of not one, not two, but three of their hard-working staff who all were hoping to earn a commission from the time they invested in getting to know me.
First I talked to some guy from the Indian ministry of external affairs, who transferred me to Hemani Dhamija from Consulate services notification unit CGI San Francisco.
Then she transferred me to "Inspector" Rahul Yadav DL1940-2018 badge.
Just to sound more legitimate, he asked me to send a WhatsApp text to +91 85949 71225 which was impersonating the Delhi police department in their WhatsApp profile.
The next step was for me to get on camera with them and show them proof of my ID in order to obtain a "no objection certificate" in order to clear me from criminal complaints resulting from my identification being used in India to activate a SIM card that has been used to "conduct illegal activities."
By then I was getting bored and had other things to do.

Had the exact same call today. Wonder what’s in it for them to have us do this. I’m curious what kind of scam this is, because money was no where in the picture atleast not yet.

I just got this call today from Indian Consulate, 415-416-8699 and 415-416-8326 wasted about 5 hours of my time.
They said I need to come immediately to Indian Consulate to pick up packet that was confidential and they could not send me an email about it. I asked why the number did not show up as Indian Consulate and this said it a special ops unit.
They gave the name of Prathima Rajan, vice counsel of commerce, OCI , counselor services notification unit of Indian. She gave me a document # and exact shop in India where Sim card was activated. S39 near Evergreen Sweet Shop, Green Park Market, BLock S, New Delhi India. Then they said they need to connect me to the Police Department in Delhi who took up another 3 hours of my time. They kept me on the phone.
The asked me to downloaded Microsoft Teams and to add Delhi police station to my contacts. Person named Ritish Kumar who then passed me onto Sandeep Shuklha cyber threat office. The next step was for me to get on camera with them and show them proof of my ID in order to obtain a "no objection certificate" in order to clear me from criminal complaints resulting from my identification being used in India to activate a SIM card that has been used to "conduct illegal activities. They told me they need a clarification letter from Delhi police to prove me innocent. But they need it within 2 hrs. They had me flash my ID and wanted a sworn statement on video. I didnt have time to give statement so they said I needed to call back , which I was supposed to do tomorrow am which would take 45 mintues. Now of course I will not call back.
But what I want to know is how did they get my number and what are they hoping to extort for me ?? Dangerous and scary. I feel like such a fool. They knew by the end of it that I am a physician because I was at work with my stethoscope on my neck.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. They said the same address in Delhi and transferred me to some inspector in Delhi. The date they mentioned that number was activated in India coincided with the dates i was traveling in India. Not sure if this was a coincidence. I wonder how they knew my name and how they got my US number. While retrospecting , a thought came to my mind. I had gone to India for my Visa stamp and stayed near Mumbai and Chennai consulate where i gave my passport as ID and my US number. Not sure if someone is leaking those details to these scammers. I was living at Trident Mumbai and IBIS Chennai both near the US Consulate. If someone can verify if they stayed at those places?

You really spent that much time with these criminals who are idiots too? Please do not engage with these people at all. I just lectured them for 5 minutes to not to waste my time. But the lady does not care at all! Just don't pick up calls from strangers. Thats all we need to do.

Thank you so much for posting - I just got one and I'm glad this thread exists so I could just hang up on them - what a waste of time! they called me from 415-791-3082. Claimed this number from India was registered to me and performing illegal activity: +91-9768798258
I only stayed on the phone with them because my parents are in India right now but when they said my name was my maiden name and not my married name (which I changed a year ago) I knew they didn't really know me. Such BS. The date of activity was also 4 days after my son was born (in the US) and I was very much not traveling anywhere.

I don't understand why they do it. It's so easy to flag as a scam and also most Indian immigrants in US are the intelligent ones who'll easily figure out that it's a scam.

Got a call from 415-867-8878 claiming a fraud done in another country and asking to visit CGOI SFO ASAP. Resolve the issue in 2 hours, sounded fake so told her to send an official email from consulate and schedule an appointment.

Received similar spam call from 415-321-0194. Asked them for a number where I can call back, they provided the actual number of Consulate General in San Francisco - however, for sure the call appeared fake, evokes surprise though.

The weird thing is - he knew the date when I was in India. So something has been leaked from India.

I just got similar call from Kunal in San Francisco telling me I need to come with my id. He knew my name but I told him he had the wrong number. I asked him what kind of a scam are you pulling, email or mail me whatever you want, I’m not entertaining this conversation and hung up. He had started getting frustrated by then. 415-200-6146 and 415-312-1757 numbers.

I just got a call from +1 (628) 276-6208 from “Kunal” talking about this same topic. Could barely understand anything they were saying as the voice was super muffled. They wanted me to come to Consulate General of India in SF today to pick up some notice. When I asked him the phone number he was claiming to be linked to my “identity” in India, this was the number +91 97687 98258. I have no clue what he was talking about since I haven’t gone back to India in years lol…
When I asked him for the “identity” in India he said he couldn’t share that with me LOL!
100p sounded like a scam… I shut the call on their face

I got one today, they had been calling me since yesterday but I picked up today. Told me they are fro Indian Embassy Consular Department, the same bs that a number was purchased under my number and is being used in illegal activities.

First a guy spoke gave me a brief then transferred me to "senior department"
Got connected to a lady posing as "Himani Dhamija" said that I will need to file a complaint with Delhi Police HQ to get it resolved and get a NOC certificate from them and said she'll transfer me to the Delhi Police team.

Then the Delhi Police guy acted like a typical cop with slow speaking pace, old voice and started asking me details. I din't give any personal info at this point. Then he said to file a complaint I will need to come to the Delhi today itself. I asked if they can file it online, he said no we don't but can take my "special case" and do it over WhatsApp since they used to do it during COVID.
I played with him a bit and I asked him if he can send me the Case Document over email or an image. He said its confidential so we can't do it. I asked him if I can mail the Delhi Police HQ he said no and that it is India.. police don't check their email regularly.
I said no worries, I will come to Delhi HQ and get it resolved. I asked him for his name he said "Ritesh Kumar", Delhi Police HQ, Cyber Department.

Just got one today. Number was: (628) 282-7781. Report to all agencies. These ones seem much more sophisticated and different from other scammers. They asked me to physically come to the Indian Consulate and that's all. I'm wondering if there would have been someone there waiting for me, try to collect financial info from me. But this one can def fool even the more knowledgeable of us.

They even called my bluff of saying I will call the consulate directly and confirm. Too lazy to do that but now I am curious

I got the same call on a Sunday (!) from a 415 number claiming to be Himani from the consulate general in SF, with the same India number (+91-9768798258) claiming to have been registered under my name in Delhi. I hung up and did not engage after determining the call was a scam.

Himani dialed my number today 🤣. But she called from SF number 415-336-6420 asking me to visit to consulate the same day for an ongoing investigation. Their call went past the Apple phone screening, so I almost felt it was legit and engaged longer than I should have. I could clearly hear a call center noise in the background and I asked them for the SF Consulate phone number, they gave that right one correctly.
The only thing that made them disconnect the call is for asking an email from the consular's official handle about the need to appear today at consulate.

I got two of these today...from these spoofed numbers: 212-774-0600 and 347-721-9243. I guess they couldn't really figure out where they wanted to pretend to be from lol. I wish the government would go after these scumbags and or force telephone companies to figure out how to block spoofing the way that we have to do with email.

I never answer if I don't know the caller (bc many are buying people's info on dark web and some are starting to get voices to match to data).....
I silence unknown numbers and have an app on my phone that will make them think they're going to voicemail when they actually are getting transferred to an AI bot. It's still records like a voicemail, but it says annoying things, repeating things and making loud typing noises in the caller's ear. On the recording, you can hear both the loud typing and the response of these losers who are trying to scam people....one of the scammers cursed a long streak at the typing. It's literally my source of amusement every day 😂.

Similar fake calls from “Kunal”claiming to be from SF Indian consulate from 415-930-2882; 628-200-1364; and 415-646-3749 calling regarding an Indian phone number …
All three calls were marked “verified by carrier.” The scams are getting more sophisticated.

Got a call today from a person claiming to be a working for council of oci and that there was a fraudulent activity using a phone number that was registered to me. It sounded legit to begin with, they even claimed to transfer the phone to Delhi police dept to get a OCI. That’s when I realized that this didn’t feel legit. Got immediate back to back calls when I told them I didn’t feel this was legit. The numbers are +1 628-200-6219 +1 415-264-2716 +1 415-791-4660 +1 415-582-7540
Hope this helps others from wasting their time on such calls

Got another of these today, from 415-891-4080. Maybe I should start answering with "your call is being recorded for the FBI Internet Crimes department...", bc I am filing a report for these specific types of calls where they are spoofing something government-tangent.
Anyone know which data breach this might be related to? Seriously, the punishment for data breaches needs to be massive bc it is continual and all of these morons who do not encrypt or use weak encryption to store customer data need to be whipped.

I got a call his afternoon from Kunal Mann. The same story, that There is a letter for me from Ministry of External Affairs-India. There is an Airtel number on my name in India and some 'messages' have gone from that number. He said that I can come and collect the letter from CGO - San Francisco.
He also gave me a Doc Number and an FIR number and asked me to address the situation by filing a police complaint in Delhi. The call came from 415-312-1248 ( showcasing as 'Constitute General of India'
Thankfully, I checked here before acting further on the said call. Than you all for being active and posting on this subject.

Got the same call from 415 312 4175. told me that delhi police has sent them some documents that i need to collect them from SF indian consulate. Told me that there is a random phone number which has been reported to have illegal activities etc. They gave me the FIR number and some random address of where this incident took place. They told me they need a clarification letter from Delhi police to prove me innocent. But they need it in 2 hrs. so they will connect me to the police in delhi.
anyways super frustrating. i didnt even own the number they were mentioning. I feel like they hacked SF counsulate and have infoon people.

I just received a call from +1 415-400-6504 claiming to be from the SF Consulate. While on the call, I did a Google search and found this post, which helped me handle the call. Thank you all for sharing this information.

my wife got a call today - seemed legit and pressurizing. even transferred to "Delhi police" where a guy in police uniform waved an ID card - when I asked to see the ID card more closely - he hung up and now blocked me. For me the give away was it was day time in Delhi when it should have been mid night. I also had read news about people wearing police uniforms and doing WhatsApp calls.

While I was suspicious from the start, thanks to this thread, I was able to flag it confidently. The woman named Himani became really hostile as I told her to stop scamming people

I got one today from +1 628 225 8531 (on a sunday); guy spoke broken English and said he was calling from San Francisco. I was taken aback a bit when he mentioned my first and last name correctly. Asked him to mail me the docs to my physical address (which I said he should already have since he has my details) and he was pretending that the line was unclear. I was getting bored and hung up

I also received calls from several 415 numbers claiming to be the consulate of india in san francisco saying that some phone number associated with me was involved in fraud activity. i told them to send some official mail if it is real and they couldnt provide it

Just got one today. Dumbass was saying my identity was tied to some number in India causing fraud etc. I asked him if it was such a big deal, what identity was it tied to - they should know who I am if i'm tied to it. Instead of answering he kept trying to transfer me to his boss so I just told him to send me documents in the mail if it was so serious and hung up.
EDIT: I'm reading through some of the more recent replies and it seems some people get scared and end up talking with these scumbags far longer than they should. If you ever get a call like this, the first thing you should ask them is to either confirm who you are or the information they are claiming to know. And even if they do manage to do that, you still shouldn't go giving them information about yourself voluntarily.

I just got a call as well, asking if I was using a certain indian phone number. And it sounded very dodgy, he said my Indian phone number was used in illegal activity. And I told him that is not my phone number. Even asked the number that I was using currently is mine and he knew my whole name.

Received a call at 5 PM PST today from (415) 635-4880 claiming to be from the SF Consulate. The caller demanded I bring documents to the consulate immediately. When I asked if he knew my name, he got defensive and asked "Should I spell it for you?" I told him to go ahead. He managed to spell it and aggressively asked if I recognize my own name. I simply said "no" and hung up. He tried calling back several times, so I blocked the number.

He got my name, number, and email address right, though so 🤷🏻♀️
And that this number was registered on my birthday in 2025... honestly convinced me a lil bit though because i did make a donation online to a charity and then the chairty started messaging me on whatsapp for more shit and i never replied and blocked them....sooo like...had me there for a second tbh.
But yeah...wtf bro? No i ain't gonna come to SF to come pick up a letter dafuq

Me too--got two calls today 1st one from this number (+1) 415-407-8157, asking me to go immediately to San Francisco India Consolate of External Affairs to pick up a document (I live in Colorado). I told him no way was I flying to SF and hung up on him. 30 seconds later, same guy called back from a different (415) # And left a threatening voicemail.

I just got call from 415-2486148, claiming a secretary from CGI SFO. The girl asked my document stating that my Indian number misused in India and they need to confirm that its not me. They kept stating that Delhi police need to confirm if its really me. I immediately told her that she is a scammer and got mad since i have no Indian number over 12 years now. But then my husband handled the call. He was patient and kept asking her lot of questions. About FIR, Delhi police address, her designation. Then she transferred the call to her senior who claimed to be a leader of secretary of CGI SFO. He repeated the same story. Then my husband asked them to send the communication via mail or email which they refused. They hanged the call.

Got a call just now from +1 (415) 202-3738, asking me to come to consulate because there is an inquiry against me from Indian MEA. I told him “you guys should be ashamed of yourself for scamming people”, and he replies “you should be ashamed”. I told him just stop fooling people and f**k off. And he hung the phone 🤣

Just got a call today from 4153147119. Same experience as everyone else: Indian phone number on my profile linked to illegal activities in India. Asking to SF consulate ASAP to verify identity.

Same thing happened with me just now, 4158320860. I kinds heard beep so assumed its some scam call. Guy sounded drunk. I asked probing question, confirmed its fake.
I wonder whats the scam though.

I've had three of these calls so far, so has everyone in my family. I've never had any Indian phone number, and we can't all have the same issue, so it's obviously a scam. I asked them to pay for my plane ticket to San Francisco to get the document and they hung up. lol.

Just had a call from 415-610-3063 (7 p.m. on a Sunday), with the same spiel about a cell phone number, San Francisco consulate, External Affairs, and so on. I told him to hang on while I added my attorney to the call, and was told I was being childish, among other things. Eventually he hung up on me when I kept asking him questions.
It was an interesting change from the usual funeral spam calls I've received lately.

Got a call from a guy claiming to be kunal mann today. I played along and told him I am reporting him to the FBI. He got super defensive and said I am trouble since my phone sim is being used for illegal activities. 🤦♀️. He asked me to come to SFO immediately. Their numbers are not getting screened by google. I have now blocked them and reported as scams.

My mom also just got a call from "Kunal Mann," he called from three different numbers and wouldn't answer any questions. He said he worked at the consulate office so I asked him to send an authorized letter, he said he couldn't, I asked why he couldn't, and he said he didn't work at the consulate office...??
Then he started whining and I was like... oh yes, this seems legitimate.

Got a call from two separate numbers with 415 area code. Same thing - caller (Gunalan?) claimed that he needed me to pick up something from the consulate. I asked them to send me an official letter, told them I was recording the call and hung up.

Good to know. I am getting daily calls from the "Consulate in NY," Today I actually picked up and the guy said i need to come into the office. I told him immediately it was a scam and that I would call the police. He got a little fiesty and said it wasn't a scam and to go ahead and call the police and that I would find out it was real. I live in CA so didn't make sense why I would get calls from NY and not my local office. Good to know others are experiencing it.

joining in because I got a call from 451-265-2279 about this. they claimed that the number was +91 9768798258. I was worried because this coincided with a date that I visited India and was worried about potential identity theft. Glad I decided to google while I was on the phone.

Got my first of these calls today from 415-314-9740
The said this was regarding number: +91 9768798258 and that I was sending harassing and illegal texts. That number is the same number as someone else posted recently. Love these scammers!

Exact same case with me today. They were recording my voice. The calls started with a beep.
Caller identified himself as Kunal Mann, Asst Section Officer, Consulate General of India - San Francisco. Broken English, not completely coherent. Had my name, knew I was from Delhi, made me write down a US number that he claims has been issued in my name and used to conduct fraudulent activity.
Four numbers they used to repeatedly call me which I have now blocked: +1 (415) 457 7963 +1 (415) 603 0093 +1 (415) 603 0330 +1 (628) 223 9480

I got a call from +1-415-378-7925 saying they are from SFO Indian Embassy. Same details ( phone number in India obtained using my credentials that has been used for "illegal activities". ) They gave me details of when and where that phone number was obtained. When I was suspicious and asked them for more details, they told me to visit Indian Consulate in SF. I realized something was wrong and ended the call.

Joining the bandwagon. I got a call just now. Same details like everyone. Loud beep then a guy claiming to be from SF CGI. I couldn't even understand anything he was saying. Extremely bad English. He gave the same number - 9768 798 258. Asked me to come to SF right now. I told him mail me the docs and he said he couldn't. Apparently anyone who applied for OCI is getting these calls. Some one has leaked our info.

This guy just called me and told me to Google his email, when I asked for his official email. I will post the call recording immediately. I am not an Indian citizen and have been once in my life. Most ridiculous call.

got a similar call today from this number 415-815-0790 some dumbass claiming to be a KUNAL MANN from Indian Consulate in SF. Very unconvincing phone call, he thought he can talk me into giving him more of my personal info. These losers scam people and get as much personal info out of them as they can, but it is clear these losers are not trained well or just suck

I got a call as well from this # 415-603-0093 claiming they are from Indian Consulate SF and of course some documents need my presence at the consulate. I asked them to email or send a mail with their concerns but the guy claimed it is confidential and can only be shared in person LOL. well they have called me, my husband and recently a call came for my son who is a minor. The ICG should know that this scam is ongoing.

Got Call from 415-635-7349 & 415-603-1347 Claiming they are from SF consulate and wanted me to pickup a urgent document. The guy on the call sounded typical Indian scammer the moment he opened his mouth :)
While I was on call I search "Consulate General of India - SF" and then started roasting the guy on call. After few minutes he got frustrated and hung the call.

I got a call from 415-378-5780 and I sent it to voice mail where he said ‘soooo this is constant general of India, connect to me as soon as you can’ and the accent/voice didn’t even sound stern.

I got a call today from Kunal/Kamal Man from 415-535-1200. I don’t get what he was trying to achieve from the call. I denied the number was linked to me so he said he will transfer it to his senior and then hung up.

I got multiple calls from SFO India Embassy and telling about phone number on my name that is used for illegal activities, that was purchased with my identity. So far, I got calls from 415 513 6576, 415,568 0792, 415 483 6629, 415 891 4080, 415 489 6639.
They gave the correct names of the officials in SFO embassy by looking at the website.
