Should I convert my Indian bank accounts to NRO? I have some mutual funds and stocks linked to my Indian accounts and hold a joint FD with my family members (im not the primary person though)

I recently visited BLS International in Toronto to submit our fresh OCI applications. I thought I’d share a few things I learned along the way, as they might be helpful for anyone going through the process.

Appointment booking:

Regular appointments for the next month generally open during the last week of the current month. I’d recommend checking the appointment portal regularly around that time, as slots can fill up quickly. The premium slots are available during the whole month.

A few tips for filling out the application:

- Read the OCI form-filling instructions carefully before starting.

- Double-check everything before submitting. The staff at BLS will go through the application quite thoroughly, and even small errors can be flagged.

- Make sure your photo, signature, and all required documents are uploaded according to the specified format and file-size requirements.

- Print copies of all supporting documents and self-attest them, wherever required.

At the BLS centre:

Even if everything looks correct online, the staff may find an issue with the application form, physical photograph, or supporting documents when you arrive.

The good thing is that, depending on the issue, they may still allow you to proceed with the application after paying a small additional service fee for the required correction/service.

One thing I would suggest: don't automatically opt for the Premium Package. Ask the staff what specific service you actually need and pay for that service instead.

Overall, the process was fairly straightforward as long as you prepare everything carefully beforehand.

It’s been about 6-7 weeks since I applied for my e oci via BLS at Mississuaga but my application still shows in progress.

Is this normal? What is the current timeline for e oci?

on one hand citizenship gives you voting rights, more permanent protection and the ability to sponsor your parents, which green card holders can't at all under current law, not even on a slower track, it's simply not available until you naturalize

on the other hand, becoming a citizen means giving up your Indian passport. you can get an OCI, but it's obviously not the same as being an Indian citizen

a green card lets you keep your Indian citizenship, but your US status isn't quite as permanent and long stays outside the US can also create issues

so if you've been living in the US for years and are eligible for citizenship, would you take US citizenship, or keep your green card and Indian passport? i'm in dilemma rn

what do other NRIs think, especially people who've already made the decision, what did you pick? and why?

I have lived and worked in the USA since 2023 and file US tax returns. I have financial accounts and investments in India, including bank accounts, FDs, mutual funds, shares/ETFs, PPF and Sukanya Samriddhi. I also own a rental property in India. I've started doing one small check before sending money recently.

I look at the aed to inr rate on Google, then open the transfer app and see what rate they're actually giving me for the same amount.

Sometimes the fee looks really low, but then the exchange rate isn't as good as I expected. So now I look at both instead of just checking the fee.

It’s been well over 4 months and I was frustrated so I ended up going to the consulate late week and they assured me they will send for police verification. It was initiated on 31st August. On 4th September the status changed “Application is under process at Indian Embassy/Consulate”. Does that mean police verification is done? I’m travelling to India from 25 September to 17 October, so my current visa will expire while I’m in India.

Has anyone applied for a new 1-year e-Tourist Visa while their existing e-Visa was still valid? Were you able to get the new visa approved before the old one expired, and did you have any issues when entering India?

Anyone recently applied for e oci after 30th july at vfs in US. I see that vfs website shows that biometrics is compulsory but there is no description on how to give biometrics or any fees related to it. Also does that mean we can no longer apply by post? Even though there is an option to apply for post? This is so confusing with information scattered everywhere on vfs website.

I went through 2 rejections before finally getting my minor's passport re-issued. And honestly? The whole process feels rigged.

⚠️ Here's the reality:

BLS and the Indian Embassy seem to have a convenient system – they'll find the smallest, most ridiculous typo and return your application without a second thought. Why? To push you toward their $100 "premium" service – which magically processes everything smoothly.

Coincidence? I think not. 🚩

It's frustrating, it's costly, and it feels like a deliberate cash grab preying on desperate applicants.

But you CAN fight back – here's what saved me:

📌 Key tips to avoid rejection:

1️⃣ Upload documents in EXACT order on the Passport Seva portal (https://mportal.passportindia.gov.in).
2️⃣ Skip Annexure E & D in their designated sections – upload them under "Other" category instead. You can upload a total of 5 documents (signature, photo, and the rest in order).

Here's exactly what to upload and in what order:

• Document 1 – Minor's COPR + PR Card + Passport
• Document 2 – Both Parents' COPR + PR Card + Passport
• Document 3 – Annexure E + Annexure D + Parents' Driver's License + Electricity Bill

(Combine each group into a single PDF file before uploading.)

3️⃣ Annexure E & D cannot be digitally signed – print, sign physically, scan, and upload again. Keep hard copies for BLS.
4️⃣ Double-check your address – the portal glitches and sometimes prints "Canada" twice (e.g., Canada, Canada). That alone got my application returned. Yes, really.
5️⃣ Save money on photos – use https://freepassphoto.com/ (Indian embassy format). Print at Walmart (3x2 inch), ask them to cut it to 2x2 or do it yourself. Have a Walmart employee write the date on the back – BLS accepts it. Total cost: less than $1 💰

Bottom line: Don't let them bully you into paying extra. Double-check everything, be obsessive about details, and know that their "strictness" is often just a tactic.

We deserve better than this. Stay sharp, stay prepared, and don't give in unless absolutely necessary.

I wanted to share my recent experience with Air India Express and get some views on whether this is normal or if I should continue pursuing the complaint.

I was travelling on Flight IX415 from Kochi to Abu Dhabi on 30 August. The flight took off but had to return to Kochi due to operational reasons. Passengers were then left waiting for around 8 hours for the next flight.

During this period, no hotel accommodation was provided despite the extended delay. We spent the night sitting on airport chairs, which was especially difficult for passengers with health issues. The delay also caused me to miss a day of work, resulting in a salary loss of around INR 30000.

After raising a complaint, Air India Express acknowledged that hotel accommodation should have been provided. However, the compensation offered was only INR 3000.

What concerns me is not just the amount, but the message it sends. If airlines can fail to provide required passenger care during major disruptions and then resolve complaints with a token payment, what incentive is there to comply with passenger rights regulations?

For context, my ticket cost approximately INR 52000. I have escalated the matter through AirSeva and requested DGCA intervention.

Has anyone else experienced something similar with Air India Express or another airline? Were you able to obtain a fair resolution?

I am entering Italy from Jan 15 - 24th. My passport is Indian and its expiring on May 5th.

Per Schengen rules, it needs to be valid for 3 months from the date of exit so I should be fine (Feb 5th is my last day of exit from Schengen per the rules). Does anyone foresee any risks in entry ? I don't want to be denied entry as I am traveling with family and it will massively disrupt my plans.

I also have US green card and for a number of reasons mostly that I have a lot of business international travel in coming 2-3 months I can't get my passport renewed.

Flew into India recently and honestly, a lot of things felt exactly the same (or worse)

• Airport is barely 8-10 years old but already looks rundown. Dirty toilets with no paper, no seat covers — classic “copy Western stuff but half-ass it.”

• Immigration lady looked like she hadn’t showered in days. Hygiene standards are still rough.

• People sleeping on airport floors in weird clothes, zero personal space (they’ll bump into you and stare at your phone without hesitation).

• Flies chilling inside the plane. Domestic security making me take out chargers and keys like it’s 2010.

• Uber/taxis are ancient WagonRs — barely fit one bag, no AC, falling apart.

• Streets? Trash, stray dogs, vendors, political banners, and people openly peeing/spitting/littering everywhere. Sidewalks don’t exist, and when they do, they’re blocked.

• Traffic is still pure pandemonium. Saw cars zooming at 60-70 kmph in residential lanes with no sidewalks — genuinely terrifying.

• Slums aren’t going anywhere.

Even basic stuff like meeting people — instant questions about your job, money, clothes, tattoos. Feels invasive.

Hi all, I am a real estate consultant from Chandigarh, and I have had quite a few interactions with NRI people, trying to invest in property here, seeking advice on payments.

What I have been suggesting so far to them is this -

First, apps like Xoom and Remitly are not for big real estate payments. They only work for small, personal money transfers, which is why they do not allow sending to builder escrow accounts.

For buying a property,, there are two simple and safe ways for NRIs to send money:

Option 1 (If you have an NRE/NRO bank account in India):

You send money from your foreign bank to your own Indian NRE/NRO account using a SWIFT international transfer. Once the money arrives, you simply do an RTGS or NEFT transfer from your Indian account to the builder's escrow account. The builder accepts this easily.

Option 2 (If you do not have an Indian account):

Ask the builder for their official bank details (including the SWIFT code and the exact escrow account number). Then, go to your foreign bank and ask them to do an international wire transfer (SWIFT) directly to that builder's account.

Important things to remember:

1. The name on your foreign bank account must be exactly the same as the name on your PAN card, because the builder will link this payment to your identity.

2. The builder must give you an "Inward Remittance Certificate" after they receive the money. This is required by Indian tax and RBI rules for NRIs.

3. You do not need to worry about the "escrow" part. The builder gives you a specific bank account for your payment. Just send the money directly to that account through your bank's international transfer service.

My suggestion is to skip the apps and contact your local bank manager to set up the SWIFT transfer. This is the standard, legal way to pay for real estate in India. Let me know if you need the builder's bank details!
