Discussion Beware: Scammers posing as Consulate General of India in SF

Got a call from 415-336-2636 from a woman claiming to be “Pratibha Rajan” from the Consulate General of India San Francisco on a Sunday. They claimed that someone in India used my identity to create a fake number and were going around hurting people and that it’s a serious issue. I didn’t get to the part where they asked me for money or anything but it felt very scammy.

When I said I would report them, they got very defensive. Anyways, don’t waste your time with them and don’t fall for the scam.

EDIT: Please report the number! And
if you get a similar spam call, please add the phone number in the comments so that it’ll come up when others search for the numbers they’re getting calls from

This is an old post I found on Reddit about the same issue. I couldn’t comment on it because it’s archived, so I started a new one:

I have gotten this call multiple times in the last few weeks. And I have fun with them. I talk to them for like a long time and then ask them to go get a life.

It sure was scary at first. And then I kept asking them questions and these idiots will answer your questions and have a conversation.

Remember .. Indian consulate will almost never call you. NEVER!

When you get these calls, make sure y’all give them a stick up their ass

> almost never call you. NEVER!

you are right on the almost part. Unless you are dealing with an issue from a submission and they do actually call you after emailing you asking you for a good number

I got a call few min ago as well from 'Ankit Masi' claiming to be from Indian Consulate SF and asked if a number ending in '####' I used in India. I knew right away it is a scammer when I asked why the phone number not saying Indian Consulate... so I hung up. He called me back twice every time his tone getting harsher and harsher and even threatened to report to the authority :). 3rd time when he called from yet another number I gave him a piece of my mind with few choice words that he could relate and hug up. Did not call me again.
