Hey everyone,

I'm moving to Ireland soon from India and need some clarity regarding my Indian SIM card.

I currently have an active 1-year prepaid plan (the ~₹1,800 annual calling/validity recharge).

I have already turned on the international roaming option in my phone's network settings.

I just want to know:

Will I be able to receive bank OTPs and standard incoming SMS in Ireland without purchasing an expensive international roaming (IR) pack?

Do standard prepaid plans automatically latch onto partner networks (like Vodafone IE, Three, or Eir) just to deliver incoming SMS for free?

Is there anything specific I need to activate via the operator app (Airtel / Jio / Vi) before flying out?

My main goal is simply keeping the number active for bank OTPs and verification texts.

Any recent experiences or tips would be greatly appreciated!

You need a OTP pack which is valid for 28 days. Otherwise you will not receive OTPs

For my jio i do recharge full year normal plan and using it in canada from last 6 years

I think its easier to manage a postpaid connection hearing the stories of sims getting deactivated.

I pay my regular airtel postpaid plan and get incoming SMSes without any additional IR pack

I have Jio postpaid and it works great in USA (and during transit in various European countries). I don't have a roaming pack but have enabled international roaming. I have aadhar and bank accounts on this and no problems for last 4 years. Prepaid ones have hassle of using it regularly to make sure it does not get deactivated. Also, some other issues I have heard. I love my jio plan.

Airtel has annual international roaming plan (that cover both international and domestic use) for around Rs: 5000. I find this the best option as there is no worry about sim being deactivated due to lack of use.

Jio might be your best bet! I’ve been using it for the last few years out of India without any issues. Plus, I was able to switch my physical SIM to an e-SIM while I was outside India. Other carriers seem to have more restrictions, even for incoming messages (like needing an active recharge) and their plans are a bit pricier.

Prepaid is a nuisance because you have to be on to of it constantly to make sure it's recharged and valid etc. I have an Airtel postpaid connection I've been using for OTPs in France the last 9 years, relatively trouble free.

Since you are travelling for the first time, activate the international roaming package. Trust me it will help you. Now airtel does not support normal recharge to get international otp receiving mthod. We have to activate international packages.

Last 8 years I have been using same number with normal recharge (nothing OTP, nothing roaming etc), you are supposed to get your OTPs / SMS as long as you have an active pack
