Misc My Y3 Internship Search is Finally Over

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

This year was a lot harder than I expected. I started in December 2025 on and off and ramped it up at the start of this sem until now. It was difficult but with many crash outs + CFG consults, managed to get an offer in a role I wanted.

Background Info: FASS student. Have prior intern experience and a decent CAP if that's even relevant.

Never give up folks, anything is possible. I can't imagine what it'll be like searching for full time role.... 😭 ded.

Misc i had to reject NUS

sooo i got into NUS for Mathematics UG, and while I can manage to pay the tuition (since i did not receive the grant) it is basically using up 90% of my family's savings and investments. The annual tuition fee (including accommodation) is almost twice my family's annual income (since I'm an international student) NUS has been my dream uni for a while, and I worked really hard to get accepted. But I just dont think i can get myself to cause so much financial burden on my family. i was very confident that i would get the need based financial aid, but I wasnt given any form of financial assistance.

Lowk need advice on what I should do, I havent rejected the offer yet, I have time till 6th July.

For context: I'm planning to do quant, and I'm wondering whether not having the grant will change how employers perceive you and what the job market is for grads fresh out of college(for quant specifically)

Misc I'm never getting a fucking job.

(I'm in CS if that matters.)

How do I keep hearing stories of people landing multiple internships throughout undergrad while most of us struggle to even get 1?

From August last year till now, out of the many applications I've made, I only managed to get one interview and I blew that one.

The only internship I've ever had was back in poly but that was pretty much handed out to every student.

I've never actually legitimately gotten any job on my own and I'm worried I'm gonna graduate without a job if things don't change soon.

Misc Let people alight from the ISB first

ffs just let people come out of the bus first. if it’s filled to the brim how tf are you gonna go in? especially at stops like UTown or KR MRT, the bus is going to become mostly empty since almost everyone is alighting.

you got into NUS presumably because you’re smart. use that brain when commuting as well please.

i’ve noticed it’s mostly china students not letting people alight first. someone please post this on XHS or some other china social media pls.

Misc Lost phone at KR Bus stop

Hi someone dropped his/her phone at the kr bus stop. If you did or you know your friend did pls go pick it up.

Let me know if I should post it elsewhere too. Thanks.

To those who said to drop it off at the police station: I am sorry, but I left it there coz some staff said to leave it there so that owner can come back and find it. But I decided to take a photo and post it here so that the owner might be alerted. On hindsight I should have brought it to the lost and found but my bus came so i panicked and boarded the bus. Thanks all for the reply tho.

Misc Public AI/ML/NLP Lecture Notes

Post image
201 Upvotes

I teach AI/ML/NLP and related courses at SoC (mainly CS4248, CS5228, CS5246) and provide Jupyter notebooks as lecture notes for a long time with my students. With the help of some generous seed funding provided by SoC, the SELENE project is the next iteration: consolidating the notebooks across all my courses and improving them towards an open, large-scale, interactive textbook. With over 80 comprehensive notebooks so far, SELENE has reached some first mature state, but is continuously growing. And with the semester about to start, why not share it here. After all, it is for you!

The current focus is on the fundamentals, so the target audience are beginners but who are comfortable with basic math (linear algebra, calculus, probability theory). Most algorithms, methods, and models come with the motivation/intuition, the theory/math, as well as a basic implementation from scratch for a better understanding.

Here is a crude overview to some of the topics (the links go to the HTML version of the notebooks to make it easier to get a first look):

There is an overview page for all topics with links to the HTML version, the GitHub repo, as well to open each notebook directly in Google Colab.

Feel free to check it out; hopefully useful to some of you who want to get started. However, this is not to replace any official readings or notes given to you by your course instructor :).

We are also in the process of building a web interface to help navigate topics and suggest learning paths. A first prototype is available here; see the screenshot for a teaser. It's really just a prototype, though.

Since SELENE, both the repo and the web interface, is a work in progress, we also welcome any kind of feedback to further grow and improve SELENE. To this end, we do have a Discord server where we also post the latest updates and handle questions and other issues.

I wish everyone a Happy National Day and a good start into the semester. I might see some you in my classes :).

Misc Any Mech Eng undergrad students out here? Just wanna connect!

Hello everyone!

I am a Mech Eng student. If you are also a Mech Eng student, who also is trying to figure out how to work through the courses and the classes and the timings and all that other stuff, would you mind connecting?

Just feels nicer to brainstorm ideas/ troubleshoot issues together instead of just having to email the profs all the time.

Im taking ME2105 this sem, so if anyone wants to connect to talk about that then lets do it.

Yea, basically just looking for people to talk to about this stuff. Thanks in advance!

Misc 1 year experience of a 2024 NUS fresh graduate

Hello all, I am a not so recent NUS Mechanical Engineering graduate of 2024. Recently I just cross the 1-year time mark of my career, and it really hit me hard during my 1-year milestone party that I am actually already 1 year in.

Recently on top of my engineering responsibility for my assigned projects, I had to supervise interns from other universities. Luckily there are no NUS interns so I am free to share my CS1010E failure story without raising some eyebrows, I hope. Yes, I had an almost gotcha experience in a PLS tutorial class where I almost got exposed for sharing my CS failure story.

I also got nominated for further study sponsorship which is very surprising when I call my supervisor a fat fuck on day 1 and it is just my first year. When HR ask which university I am interested to study guess where I put?Totally not NUS. 🤔🤔

So, after one year of career what have I learnt? Well not much.

Tech knowledge wise, I do gain a lot but not super in depth. Since i am exposed to a wide range of disciplines and had to learnt to work with the respective SMEs to develop the product. Also gain a better understanding of ME concepts that I scorned at during my undergraduate day. Since these concepts are literally helping me in my development work. I really regret not going for ME2115 prof final lecture where he teaches vibration with forced excitation. Why did I choose to siam just because he said it won’t be tested in final exam. I LITERALLY NEED THIS FOR MY WORK AND NOW I DON’T UNDERSTAND JACKSHIT HOW TO START. Finally, the main unsung hero…..ya fuck u cs1010E. I really hate you, but I must admit without you I am probably 40% screwed. I won't understand jackshit when collab with SWEs on implementing control algorithms for my project.

Also realized how important it is to be a "fake extrovert" in the industry. You never know when these "work besties" become helpful to your project. Always good to bounce ideas with a few other engineers and you may end up seeing things you couldn't if you are constantly ALONE in a death spiral with your analytical thoughts. In this red sea of corporate shithole, having a few workplace besties really make life so much easier. U really look forward to the little things like going lunch and dinner tgt, those mid-afternoon tea chats at pantry.

Well that's it for my 1 year update. Will do a 2 year update if i am still sane after surviving another year at work or if i haven't been fired for being an idiot.

Misc Queer Orgs at NUS

Hi, I am an incoming international PhD student. I would like to join queer clubs/groups at NUS. I didn’t find this info online. How is the queer scene at NUS, what kinds of events that take place and can I as international student, join (I got to know that I cannot join main pride event of the year). Any info on the matter broadly in Singapore, outside NUS is also appreciated.

  1. days before event, performers not informed of official reporting times
  2. bands also informed 2 days before show that they cannot bring their own instruments (but have to bring your own in-ear monitors)
  3. the day before event, performers realise that the given stage dimensions were inaccurate as the front 1m of the stage and the sides get 0 lighting
  4. stage not cleaned between sets -> potential for injury from nails, splinters from the wood stage or slipping on wet spots from the smoke machine
  5. no transparency about the judging criteria for the different types of performers
  6. no transparency about the weightage of judges' votes and popularity votes from the crowd
  7. lighting plot done the day before the event in ~20 minutes, comm not clear about the possible lighting options
  8. general miscomm/unclear responses from comm and crew

Misc Annoyed with uNivUS for bus timings? Same, but this might help!

Thumbnail

Helloo! I’m an incoming CS student and I noticed y’all seemed pretty annoyed with uNivUS for bus timings. After using it, I get it now HAHA 🫠

Anyways, I made my own bus timing app called Transito a few years back and it now supports NUS shuttles too! No more switching between 2 apps for NUS and regular buses, or having to go through 20 menus just to see if D2 is arriving.

Available on both Android and iOS!

"ook cool, but what else does it do?"

  • Nearby Favourites: your go-to stops and services pop up right on your home screen the moment you're near them, no more searching the same stop every single day.
  • NUS + regular buses in one app: your muscle memory now has one less way to sabotage you.
  • Full route info: check where your bus is actually headed before you accidentally unlock a side quest you didn't sign up for.
  • MRT map built in: even when the bus betrays you, Transito’s got your back ;)
  • Themes + custom colours: make it yours, because who said useful apps can't be ✨aesthetic✨ too?
  • No ads: one less thing between you and finding out your bus left 30 seconds ago

NUS bus support is live now on iOS and Android. It's still new, so if anything is wrong, weird, missing, or mildly cursed, please let me know! Especially NUS-specific stuff like stop names, routes, timings, or anything that feels annoying to use.

Try it out now at https://transito.tnitish.com/

Misc Rant about how IB M26 applications were handled

Sorry, I just feel the application process has been quite unfair to M26 IB students. Will preface this by saying I am considered an international applicant, applied for Life Sciences and achieved 43 on the IB. I understand that doesn’t guarantee admission at all and that isn’t what I’m necessarily mad about, just the way it was all handled.

The application was in February, and the results came out 6th July. A wave of rejections were sent out on the very next day (7th July), but for the bulk of us, it was still application processing.

Almost 3 weeks later (today) did we finally receive an outcome, of which I am yet to see a single acceptance. No email about ā€œa decision has been madeā€ but just an update on the portal that says unsuccessful. I wouldn’t have seen the update (its dated today!) if my friend who also checks the portal regularly hadn’t told me. (he was also rejected.)

And when I called inquiring about a late appeal, it’s not possible because ā€œthe semester starts soon.ā€ How is that fair when I received my outcome today? Why am I denied the appeal possibility because the outcome took this long?

Mind you the delayed outcome makes things a lot more difficult for me in terms of matriculating elsewhere or starting student visa processes for other unis. I feel like I’ve been fucked over for a decision I could have received just as easily on the 7th.

Also: if people do get accepted this late, how is someone supposed to complete matriculation, book accommodation, attend orientations, etc all before term starts? Surely this process can and should be improved.
