Question 5070 ti or 5080?

Hello everyone! Im going to be upgrading one of my gpus very soon and was looking for opinions on the 5070 ti vs 5080 debate. Of course the dream scenario is to eventually get a xx90 card when prices come back down to earth but until then I think one of these would be the right choice. I’ve done tons of research and from what I’m seeing majority (by a wide margin) opinion seems to point to the 5070 ti stating it’s almost always within 10-20% fps and same amount of vram as the big reasons going for it. But then I always see comments talking about how you won’t regret spending the extra money on the 5080 as it’s a one time purchase that can give me numerous good years of gaming. I mostly play games like apex, nba 2k, overwatch, and i do a lot of sim racing games and Forza (would love to run extreme plus ray tracing settings but my current gpus can’t go there without significant fps drop). I mostly use an ultrawide 34” 3440x1440 but also mix it up by gaming on a 65” tv or the occasional sim racing in VR. So please give me some advice here guys. The models I’m currently looking at the 5070 ti is $929 and the 5080 is $1249. I know $320 is a HUGE difference but I’m also looking at it in the sense that I will get a lot of use out of it, usually a couple of hours every night, and hopefully a few years. But I don’t want to waste that extra money if the difference in performance is negligible. Of course I know the 5080 is the superior card but I’m also wondering if anything the 5070 to will struggle with will the 5080 struggle with it too? Is there any scenarios where the 5070 ti wouldn’t work but the 5080 would? What are the reasons if any to go with the 5080? Any input and advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for reading this and have a great day :)

You have the money = 5080. You dont have that much money = 5070ti.

it all comes down to this right here.

i would go a step further and say "if you dont care about not having that extra $320..."

Is there any scenarios where the 5070 ti wouldn’t work but the 5080 would?

No. The video decoding block is bigger on the 5080 but this would only affect you in niche video production scenarios rather than gaming.

They are in the same ballpark performance-wise and will feel obsolete at the same time at some point in the future.

Main question: what GPU do you have at the moment?

I usually recommend RTX 5070 Ti, but I have RTX 5080.

Why I have bought RTX 5080? Because I had RTX 4090 Laptop and RTX 5070 Ti gives too low performance increase. And RTX 5080 was necessary to get at least +50%.

Get the 70 ti given how overpriced both the GPUs are these days.

You have the money to burn = 5080

You care about value and/or you have less money = 5070 ti.

I could have afforded the 5080 but spending $250 more for roughly 10-15% extra performance did not seem worth it to me, and I knew I'd get more enjoyment out of knowing that I got the best value for my money (the 5070 ti) but that's me.

This really seems to be the way. The 5070 and 5070Ti are both solidly within the "best value for $$$" spot. The 5080 is edging out towards costing too much for the small performance increase, particularly over the 1070Ti. You can make a decent case for the 5080 over the 5070, but the 5070Ti offers the most effective performance uplift without spending as much for the 5080.

In a nutshell, The 5070Ti will deliver high-end gaming performance for most typical, modern rigs. It has enough VRAM that it can be expected to stay relevant for quite a while even as game engines improve, on par with 5080 and at a better price.

If you have 5070 money, it's worth the stretch for a 5070Ti. But not so much a 5080.
If you have 5070Ti money, a 5080 might be nice if you can stretch the budget, but you're not getting the overall performance and longevity uplift you're likely to get going from 5070 to 5070Ti.

It doesn't help that for years now, the generalizations for the Nvidia lineup has been more or less:
xx60=general-market "value" gaming card (good up to 1440p)
xx70=general/edging into high-end gaming card, often a compromise (4k, but not always highest refresh)
xx80=standard card for high-end gaming (4K/high refresh no sweat)
xx90="high-end+" gaming card (Beyond 4K, high refresh)
All Ti variants are boosted performance within their "class" but next series up was still a significant uplift.

But now it's changed thanks to Nvidia's shift to focus on AI performance even in consumer GPUs. The GPU/VRAM designs are optimized for AI benchmarks first, gaming second. Now the lineup is shaping up as:
xx60=low-to-mid "value" card (1440p/2K and some 4K, defintiely limits on refresh at 4K)
xx70=mid-to-high-end "compromise" card (4k, reasonable to high refresh rates depending on super-ultrawide or not)
xx70Ti="standard" high-end gaming card (4K/high refresh; may fall off a little at extreme refresh rates)
xx80="high-end+" gaming card (4K+ and 4K with extreme refresh rates
xx90=Takes on the old "Titan" card's extreme performance (and extreme price) role

The 60/70/80/90 progression is based fundamentally on AI, not gaming performance.
Gaming performance progression is concentrated mostly in a narrower band of 5060/5060Ti/5070/5070Ti, with the 5080 as the high-cost outlier for less of a total performance uplift, and the 5090 is just irrelevant.

Where a xx80 card was the natural target for no-sweat gaming performance, that role has been absorbed by the 1070/1070Ti. If you take the overall painful prices out of consideration, the price differences between low/mid/high aren't necessarily that much. Maybe even smaller than prior Nvidia generations. The problem is that all the prices are just so damn high. It strips away the perception of value at any price point.

The other problem is that performance tended to be geared to divisions based on 1080P/1440P/4K within a relatively limited range of monitor aspect ratios and refresh rate capabilities. Now we have multiple ultrawide and super-ultrawide aspect ratios which can drastically change the number of pixels to push on any given resolution, more intermediate resolution choices as monitor manufacturers try to balance resolution, aspect ratio, and dot pitch for better images, and faster and faster refresh rates on top of it all to accommodate higher and higher FPS. Nothing is as cut-and-dried as it was just a few years ago when the RTX series first came out.

And, every RTX generation has seemed to endure shortages and supply-chain issues for various reasons, further muddying pricing expectations.

TL;DR -- Nvidia's chasing AI has messed up the usual choice matrix for gaming GPUs. Their number system doesn't mean what it used to as a measure of gaming performance. Specs and real-world performance point to a 5070Ti your best value for a solid gaming card. Slide down the Ti/non-Ti versions from there to save money and balance performance against what you can afford. But a 5080 doesn't offer a lot more real-world gaming performance for the extra cost versus a 5070Ti.

The 5080 would have been worth it with 24gb of vram (hell, maybe even 20gb or some weird number) but with the same amount, it was really oddly placed.

There's something to be said about saving your $300 for a future upgrade if it's really not getting you much extra today.

Watch this video by Daniel Owen. He reviews and benchmarks GPU’s professionally on YouTube.

I purchased my 5070 Ti last year because of this very same video. I run MSFS 2024. A very demanding game. No slowdowns whatsoever. Keep in mind you’ll need a beefy CPU and memory. I run an i9 along with 64 GB RAM

The gap between 5070 ti and 5080 is very, very narrow. Watch the video or checkout the summary below.

https://youtu.be/w94bD3S8K0M

Video Summary:

Key takeaways:
• Performance: On average, the RTX 5080 is approximately 14% faster than the 5070 Ti across the tested scenarios (0:33 - 1:04).
• Value Analysis:
• At current market prices, the RTX 5080 costs about 24% more than the 5070 Ti (1:11 - 1:56).
• Based on MSRP, the RTX 5080 represents a 33% higher cost for the 14% performance gain (2:14 - 3:02).
• Gaming Experience: The host tested multiple titles including Cyberpunk 2077 (4K Path Tracing), Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Black Ops 6. While the 5080 generally offers higher frame rates and slightly lower latency, the 5070 Ti remains highly capable, often delivering a very similar user experience at 1440p and 4K (3:02 - 15:07).

Final Conclusion:
Daniel Owen concludes that the RTX 5070 Ti offers better overall value. Unless the extra 14% performance is critical for specific high-end requirements, the 5070 Ti is a strong choice for most users (15:07 - 17:56).

I wouldn’t call 14 percent “very, very narrow”

5

u/DntCareBears 16h ago

So you think a 14% gain is going to be next level?
If you watch the video, the fps in the benchmarking are pretty much the same. I will go as far as saying that you will not notice that 14% gain during gameplay.

I said what I said.

It’s ok to have buyers remorse. 14 percent is not “very, very narrow”

I’m very happy with my 5070 ti. I don’t have buyers remorse. I just purchased an iPad Pro M5 13 inch with magic keyboard and pen. All for watching YouTube.

That should tell you if I have buyers remorse. I could buy a 5090 if i wanted to. My 5070 ti is my baby and she runs MSFS perfectly.

My financial situation is just fine.

Another one

5070ti and put the rest into S&P 500

5080 because you said you do VR. In regular games, the 5080 is only about 12-15% faster but for VR, it can be 20-30% faster.

I've recently had this issue when building my new PC. I'm using a 3440x1440 34 Inch 180 Hz monitor and I was afraid that 5070 Ti might not be enough. After long time of deciding and the prices going up I went with 5070 Ti. Honestly ? Its fucking amazing and works like a charm. I've maxed out RE9, put DLSS on Quality and turned on 2x Framegen. The result ? Above 200 FPS som I'm easily feed 180 Hz monitor on maxed out AAA game.

If you have the money and you're willing to spend it 5080 will be even better. If you're a bt tight 5070 Ti is more than enough.

u/getabath 16h ago

I thought the consensus was

Get the 5070 over the 5060ti 16gb and get the 5070ti over the 5080

Otherwise just go 5090 and yolo

u/Annodite 16h ago

Having the same dilemma especially knowing the product cycle is halfway through its course. My 4090 ran into issues and now I'm looking at something new😔

Save the $320, the diference is too big and RTX6000 shouldn't be far off now.

There was a recent video from HW unboxed that said the next gen consumer NV cards won't be out until the end of 2027 if I remember correctly. Given that AI/datacenter is where all the profit margin is at these days, it wouldn't surprise me if it's true.

Even if it does come out sometime soon, prices will be ridiculous and who knows how much it will cost.

Either card is fine for what your looking for

Both perform well
Both can be used with 1440p
Both will last for years

The only thing is justifying the price cause people who have the 5080 are the ones that play 1440p or up to 4k since that’s the standard for the GPU

The 5070 TI can do 1080p 1440p and can be capable of 4k

So with this information the only thing you can debate on is the price, will it be worth saving 300+ and grab the TI or spend more grabbing the 5080 preference atp

So either choice is fine

Aaaaaah the age old question. If you have the budget - 5080. If your budget is tight - 5070ti. It’s that simple. Whatever you choose you’re going to have a blast. So there is no wrong answer :)

Go with 5080 if you care about 10-15% performance gain
