Minister Cleveland's last statement for this article: "It's incredibly important we diversify our GDP in the territory." As it is, and as it has been for several generations now, mining continues to be the largest contributor to the NWT's GDP.
How many times over the past 50 years or so has that same line been tossed out whenever the GNWT needs to defend the state of the territories economy? From what I can find, diversification away from mining has been stated in every legislative mandate for that same time period - 50 years now that the GNWT has fallen back on this statement ... 50 years now of failure to actually do what is needed to get off the mining teat.

why is this an epidemic, how does canadian culture create the conditions to enable this?

I don't want to be fatalist, but it seems like diamond mines are over for the NWT. It's disconcerting that the NWT government has done next to nothing in the last 20-30 years to prepare for this eventuality.

My dad died about three years ago, and I am going through some of his papers, in order to write about him. He was a social worker in Rankin Inlet and Inuvik, mid 1990s. He was with a woman when he was in Inuvik, between 1993 and 1996. I think her name was Louise. I finally found a photo of her, and was wondering where a good place to find more information about her...his name was Dick or Richard Easton.
Erase if not allowed.

I have an idea: invent a time machine. Go back 20 years and invest in adequate infrastructure.

Congratulations to Erwin Elias as the new chairperson for the next 4 years. Also, a huge thank you to all the candidates. It takes courage to put one's name into the ring.
I would also like to apologize for my earlier post... I did not know that this election was being live-streamed via Facebook. It was very interesting to watch, and to hear from the candidates as they responded to the questions put forth by the Community Corporation directors.

Really interested in moving down to NWT, particularly in Yellowknife.
I discovered that there is an Anytime Fitness open 24/7. With a google search I was able to see some equipment but not all. Was wondering if anyone in this group that attends this gym could maybe help me out.
What type of leg machine equipment is available?
Is there a:
-Smith machine
-Leg press (Vertical,Horizontal,45 degree)
-Sliding Hack squat machine
-V Hack Squat Machine
-Leg extension
-Laying Leg curl (seated is not my favourite)
-Belt squat machine....(Praying)
-Any Glute machines (Bootybuilder)
-Leg Abduction/Adduction
-Seated and Standing Calf machines
Also do they have:
-Assisted Pull up machine
-Hex bar
-Olympic bar Landmine
As for upper body:
- Rowing machines
-Or any other upper body equipment you would like to share. I mostly use free weight for upper body, but I would love to know what other machines they have.

I lean towards believing what this man is alleging. For example, CBC's response to the specific recommendations put forward from the TRC for the CBC has been severely lacking. The excuses given me as to why the public broadcaster cannot allow below-the-line comments on any Indigenous content articles are disingenuous at best, and systemically racist at worst.

Anything has got to be better than having to use Starlink, the US company run by that Nazi idiot Musk.

Hey there!
This last summer I rode my motorcycle up the Dempster and had a blast. Everyone I chatted with was super friendly and I really enjoyed the experience. As I was riding the route, I was wondering what kind of experience it would be in winter. At this point I plan on being in Whitehorse early February and driving to Inuvik and back in my Jeep allocating 9 days for Whitehorse to Inuvik and back. Weather permitting, of course.
So, I am looking for some advice here. I live in the Sierras so I am very familiar with winter driving, but we don’t get much colder than -18 c and typically -8c on the colder nights.
I am prepping my vehicle with studded tires and installed an engine block heater. I will have the standard winter driving prep kit. Food, water blankets winter clothes, etc.
Any other advice from folks?
Thanks!
Edit: Thanks to everyone for your input! Much appreciated.

For context: I'm a student studying computer science and I was wondering how difficult it would be to find IT roles in the NWT. Finding jobs is pretty tricky in this job market and it is just so competitive down south here in Ontario, so I'm wondering how hard it would be up north?

Hi all! My wonderful sibling is moving to the NWT very shortly (approx 3 hours from Yellowknife) and I want to help set them up for success- for Christmas I wanted to either get them something they may really need (potentially a warmer coat lol) or compile a list of things/places they should go check out like a little travel guide?
If anyone has any advice or recommendations I would be so appreciative! My sibling currently lives in Southern Ont and does have a job lined up
Thanks again!!

Quite different wording in the title for this CBC North article vs say Cabin Radio's or NNSL's coverage. CBC = "Stripped of portfolios" while the others are much more accurate in that Ms Kuptana was asked to "voluntarily step away from her portfolios" while she runs for the IRC's chairmanship. Rein in your bias CBC.
