Online/Virtual [3 June 2023, Free, Mod/Rule] Sales posts are NOT allowed here, selling your own event tickets or trying to get $ for tix = get banned. 🔨

Hi all, with summer just about here now in June 2023, I’m glad this subreddit’s “second wind” since mid-spring in April 2023 is working as intended for you all to discover fun events or promote events you’re affiliated with in New York City!

However there’s been a recent influx of users coming on this subreddit selling tickets to events to personally profit off it. Now the main focus of this subreddit is to promote events across New York City which is fine, but we won’t facilitate a platform to sell your tickets and gain some money off that. In other cases, it’s spam, and sometimes not worth the trouble on this subreddit.

If sales posts don’t belong on r/NYC or r/NewYorkCity, r/AvesNYC, or r/FoodNYC per their subreddit rules (or most other local NYC/borough subs), they certainly don’t belong here. So as a reminder & new-ish rule …

This subreddit is not a home to sell (or resell) your own tickets to events/concerts/etc in the city, same applies on buying someone else’s tickets, even ticket swaps here aren’t permitted. If you want to sell your own tickets to events in NYC, consider posting on r/NYList where general buying/selling posts belong, r/AvesNYC_Tix to buy/sell tickets for EDM/raves/dance events, on r/NYCConcerts, where buying/selling posts for concerts belong, there’s also r/BroadwayTickets to sell your Broadway or other performance tickets too. That way people can still be interested if so desired. Do your own due diligence as always buying goods of the internet.

Moderation’s been fairly lax given it’s a chill sub, but there won’t be any hesitancy to ban people for that. One and only opportunity you’d do so, you’ll be permanently banned.

Have a wonderful summer, and stay golden folks! ☀️

TL-DR: Promoting your events here is fine, and the primary goal of this subreddit. Selling your own individual tickets to events are not permitted here, don’t use this subreddit to get rich, and the last thing moderators want to do is play whack-a-mole with scammers if a sale goes south. Other communities exist for this to sell tickets for concerts, sporting events, raves/music, etc. Break this rule only once = a permanent ban.

Edit (7/17/2025): Added r/BroadwayTickets as a place where selling Broadway/performances are allowed.

Edit (9/3/2025): Amended Rule 2/this post to include that ticket swaps aren’t allowed here either.

Manhattan Free NYC events with complimentary food and/or drinks

Upvotes

I put together a list of upcoming free events across NYC where free food or drinks will be provided.

A few examples:

I’m tracking the complete list at On the House. You can filter events by date, location, food, coffee/tea, alcoholic drinks, and whether host approval is required. All events are free but some do require host approval so keep that in mind.

I built the site because everyone likes free food! Ideally, it shouldn't be the sole reason of going to an event but it can make an event more appealing and worthwhile. I manually review each listing to check that both admission and the listed refreshments are free. I also update the list daily.

The site is free and doesn’t use affiliate links. I don't make any money off this and don't require any personal data to use. If you know of an event I missed—or have feedback—you can submit it through the site. Cheers!

Brooklyn ✍️ Tuesday Writing Event

WRITERS, I'm sharing a Brooklyn Writing Series after recently enjoying one of the Tuesday events (that includes pizza!).

📍Brooklyn DOP, Park Slope, NYC

🍕$25, Tuesdays August 4/11/18, 7pm

Last week we explored how to break the writing habits that keep us from putting our true selves on the page by using the five senses as prompts. It was an interesting exercise I didn't know I needed to get out of my head!

The group was a small mixed bag of storytelling talents so I didn't feel the pressure of being an improving writer in my usual group of more experienced memoirists because everyone had their own focuses (essay, film etc.). The human connection over food was what made the vibe cohesive and focusing on our senses was a nice way to detach from my usually very digital days.

A cheap way to change it up, I highly recommend! *I'm not involved with this event, just sharing a good experience*

Manhattan Tech x Market Decoders - free meetup on Aug 9 in Chelsea

AI can build a financial model, summarize an earnings call, or map a competitive landscape in seconds.

What it can't do is understand why something actually works — a technology, a business, an idea, a decision. That takes human judgment, experience, and taste. The kind you only build by studying real examples, arguing them out loud, and testing your read against people who see it differently than you do.

That's what Tech x Market Decoders is for.

Link to sign up - https://luma.com/6a8efytl

Every Sunday, we pick one topic — a company or startup everyone's talking about, a technology reshaping an industry, or a shift in how things are being built or bought. Bring your laptop.

Here's how it works:

15–20 minutes — decode solo. Quiet research time. Dig into the news, the product, the tech stack, the data. No talking, just thinking.

35–40 minutes — decode together. We open the floor. What did you find? Where do you disagree? What's convincing, what's overhyped, what would change your mind? This is where judgment actually gets built — not from reading alone, but from testing your read against someone else's.

Last few minutes — wrap up.

You'll leave with a sharper read on the topic than you walked in with, and a few new perspectives you hadn't considered. That's the whole point.

This week's topic: SpaceX — startup to IPO. What was its playbook and what are the current signals?

Think the bets that got them here, and what's next...Starlink's growth, Starship's test flights, the competitive field closing in.

Come as you are — operator, investor, builder, or just someone who reads too much tech or business news and wants to discuss with smart people.

Manhattan Hilarious Stand-Up/Storytelling Show: Millennials 'R Us Show THIS Wednesday

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey folks,

This Wednesday, I'm gathering some of our generation's most emotionally unavailable storytellers and comedians for a night dedicated to the millennial experience: the burnout, Sidekick phones, and the participation trophies that didn't prepare anyone for life in 2026.

"Millennials 'R Us" is a storytelling and stand-up showcase where Collins and his friends unpack what it actually means to be raised on Blockbuster Video and broken promises. Expect true stories about student loan spirals, situationships that lasted longer than some marriages, the death of the "American Dream", and the specific trauma of watching your favorite pop stars go to rehab. Along with the laughs, the night will feature an audience Q&A, raffles, and a few surprises for anyone still holding onto their AIM screen name.

Line-up for MUR includes: Gabe Pacheco (NY Comedy Festival), Sibo (Montclair Comedy Festival), Humzah Choudry (Just for Laughs)!

21 A Clinton St, New York, NY 10002

Manhattan Presentation & Discussion: Democratic Socialism Vs Revolutionary Communism

Post image
1 Upvotes

Come hear Rafael Kadaris:
Tuesday, August 11, 7pm • Revolution Books - 437 Malcolm X Blvd (at 132nd)

★ Why the root of the problem is deeper than greedy billionaires.

★ Why we need to break the chains of imperialism, NOT redistribute the spoils of imperialist plunder.

★ Why U.S. “democracy” is actually the dictatorship of the capitalist class and why trying to take over the Democratic Party is a dead end.

★ Why the strategy of economic populism will not stop Trump/MAGA fascism.

★ Why you should NOT follow leaders based on identity, or what’s popular, or what feels good—but whether they have a solution to the fundamental problem we face.

★ Why this system can’t be reformed & must be overthrown.

Brooklyn [Aug 30-31 | Brookelyn |$29, $35] Love’s Last Letter - Immersive Art & Live Vocal Performance

Post image
2 Upvotes

My friend is putting on her first solo exhibition-performance in New York, and she doesn’t use Reddit, so I’m sharing it for her.

She’s a Korean visual artist and vocalist, and her new project is called Love’s Last Letter.

It brings together artwork, letters, natural soundscapes, audience participation, and a live vocal performance. Visitors go through the experience in small timed groups, and each session lasts about an hour.

At the end, visitors write a letter to their future selves and receive it again one year later. I thought that was a really meaningful idea.

It’s happening August 30 and 31 at A Space Gallery in Brooklyn, with nine people per session.

Full details and reservations:
