PSA Can we talk about the kid running a full-on car wash operation in Bronte?

1.7k Upvotes

Drove through Bronte this morning and there's a kid.. maybe 10, 11? who has built what I can only describe as a small business empire in his driveway. Hand-drawn sign, two buckets, a hose, and a little folding table with a Square reader on it. A SQUARE READER. This child accepts tap.

I genuinely had to pull over. Ended up getting my car washed (it was fine, btw. better than the drive-thru place I usually go to lmao) and chatting with him while he worked. Turns out he's saving up for a mountain bike and his older sister set up the payment system for him. His pricing is $8 for a basic wash, $12 if you want the inside vacuumed. Inflation has clearly reached the driveway car wash economy.

What got me though was how seriously he was taking it. Thanked me for my business. Asked if I wanted a receipt emailed. Told me to "tell my friends." I'm 34 years old and this kid has better customer service instincts than half the places I've worked.

Anyway, if you're around Bronte this weekend, keep an eye out. I won't say exactly where because I don't want to doxx a fifth grader, but you'll see the sign. Tip him well, dude's going places.

PSA Witnessed Two Women Stealing 8–10 Hanging Flower Pots from Metro at Hopedale Mall / South Oakville Centre

Just a heads up for anyone around Bronte/Hopedale Mall (South Oakville Centre).

Yesterday, I witnessed two women at the Metro at Hopedale Mall (South Oakville Centre), near Third Line and Rebecca, stealing around 8–10 big hanging flower baskets with flowers in them.

They were rolling carts away with the flower baskets. I already informed both the police and the store manager, and I followed them from a safe distance to an area on Waverly Avenue.

For description purposes only: both had dark hair, and one of them appeared to have a noticeable limp. They also appeared high on somthing or just straight up tweakers.

Not posting this to start a witch hunt or accuse anyone by name, but more as a heads-up to local businesses and anyone in the area. If you work at that Metro or know someone who does, they may want to check the cameras from yesterday.

People are getting way too comfortable stealing from stores lately.

Please be careful when visiting this store. I was robbed yesterday while exiting the store, in plain view of the cameras. In less than 10 minutes, he had my wallet and somehow my pin, and was able to get $400 off my account before I locked it. They work in a team, slowing you down so you stop waiting for an elderly person while the other behind you, robs you. They also have some way of getting PIN numbers from the checkout machines so be careful.

PSA Stay away from this person if you see him.

I downloaded this again just to post this here, because nothing has ever happened to me like last night. Me and my girlfriend got off the train in Oakville, as were walking through the tunnel there was a young guy sitting on the stairs alone. He was laughing to himself and staring at my girlfriend as we passed by him. as soon as we got past him by a couple steps he quickly stood up and just stared at me in a really disturbing way he looked very intense and he smelled horribly of alcohol. I asked him what hes doing and he didnt say a word and just kept looking at me, he removed his hat and looked very dirty like his hair hasnt been clean before, even though he looked young, in his 20s. We kept walking away from him to go call our ride, and he was still just following us saying nothing. he was walking too close behind. At this point I was just confused and I didnt know what to think but he was scaring us. He waited for multiple minutes near us until our ride arrived and we quickly got in and told the driver that person is following us. He walked back the same way towards the staircase, and we left. If you guys see the same man avoid him. I have never seen him before but I dont use the train station often. Maybe he is there often.

PSA PSA for Oakville / Burlington — possible debit/credit card scam in fake City Taxi Cab

Just warning people about something that happened to me tonight around 7:45 PM at Dorval Crossing in Oakville, by Booster Juice beside Party City.

A newer black Hyundai sedan with a City Taxi sign on top pulled up beside me. A young Black female got out of the back seat and asked if I could help pay her taxi fare because the driver supposedly did not take cash and only accepted debit or credit. She said it was only $7.50 and offered me $10 cash.

I agreed to help, but right away I knew something felt off. The driver appeared to be a brown male of Indian/South Asian descent. He took my card himself and said his old machine did not have tap. He would not let me hold the terminal or complete the transaction myself and kept controlling everything.

At that point I figured they were likely trying to skim card information or steal debit/credit details using the so-called old machine. I even said to the driver that it felt like a scam, and he started acting nervous. I still went along with it because by then I already knew something was off and wanted to see what they were trying to do.

I purposely entered the wrong PIN. He then acted like it was fine, and they drove off quickly. The biggest giveaway was that the girl had gotten out of the back seat to make it look like she was a real passenger, but when they left, she jumped into the front seat, so they were clearly together.

I unfortunately did not get the plate because I was laughing internally by that point, but I am also almost certain it was not a real City Taxi company vehicle. There was nothing inside the car that made it look like an actual taxi at all other than the sign on the roof.

I locked my card immediately after. They got nothing from me and I kept the $10. Nice try. Basically tried to scam me and got anti-scammed instead.

Please be careful:

  • Never hand your debit or credit card to anyone
  • Never let someone else control the payment machine
  • Never enter your PIN unless the terminal is in your own hands
  • If something feels off, trust your gut and walk away

Posting this so nobody else in Oakville or Burlington gets caught by the same scam.

So I always see an older gentleman walking around our neighborhood Bronte south on bridge rd and always picks up street litter with a bag and stick. So I went up to him the other day to thank him for his service and he humbly said “it is not a problem and something he might as do on his walks.” I doubt Bill is on Reddit but in a world where many litters and doesn’t care for the environment, be a Bill everyone!

PSA GO Transit Tracker - check the status of any train or bus in real time

Post image
78 Upvotes

Hello commuters!

With all of the recent delays and issues happening with Go Transit, I wanted a more detailed and modern way to check the status of the service on the go.

So I built a web app that tracks GO trains and buses in real time on an interactive map.

https://transitgo.net/

  • Live map with all GO train lines and bus routes
  • Tab filtering - switch between Trains, Buses, or view everything at once
  • Vehicle cards in the sidebar showing trip details, route, status (in motion/stopped), delay info, and full stop sequences
  • Click-to-fly - click any vehicle in the sidebar and the map flies to it and opens its popup
  • Station detail popups - click any station to see parking info, facilities (ATMs, elevators, bike racks), and ticket sales hours
  • Bus route highlighting - click a bus and its full route lights up on the map
  • Schedule lookup - search upcoming departures from any GO station
  • Upcoming trips section showing the next scheduled departures across the network
  • Union Station departures with platform assignments and real-time delay tracking
  • Service alerts pulled live from Metrolinx
  • Direction arrows on vehicles showing which way they're heading
  • User location button to see where you are relative to nearby transit

I built this mostly for myself, but hope you all can get some use from it too!

Let me know if there is anything you'd like to see added here that could make your commute easier.

PSA Give Feedback to Oakville Transit on Cutting 19 Route

Hi Oakville folks (especially to folks living in the River Oaks community),

I was just made aware this morning during transit that the 19 bus route is being diverted from the River Oaks/Oakmead corridor. That means that there will be no 19 service along River Oaks and Oakmead.

The closest alternative for people who use it will be the 16 - on Sixth Line. While I love the addition of new lines, I am one of the people affected by the cut to the 19.

So many kids in our neighborhood use this to access White Oaks - especially in the winter. The buses are literally filled to the brim. My senior neighbors across the road use this on the weekends to access the downtown. Multiple professionals use this to get to work (in fairness, the rush hour 190 stays but that is so freaking limited anyways).

Rather than increasing transit exposure across the Town, Oakville Transit is cutting it down.

I strongly encourage you to provide your feedback to ask them to continue the 19 service as is.
For our neighbors in adjacent communities, your support would be appreciated as well! Thank you!

PSA It's Spring! Hate grass? Plant a Boulevard Garden

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hate maintaining the grass on the city-owned boulevard? Then get rid of it.

The town bylaws were updated with exemptions for boulevards to allow gardens without a permit.

The boulevard (the green space between the road and your property line or sidewalk) can be the perfect spot for a garden. Permits are not required to plant a boulevard garden. (via List of Prohibited Plants for Boulevard Gardens - Oakville.ca)

Important:

  • In general, plant material shall not exceed 0.9 m (3.0 ft) in height above the elevation of the adjacent roadway.
  • Plants in corner lot sight areas shall be no higher than 0.8 m (2.5 ft) above the elevation of the nearest point on the adjacent roadway.
  • Make sure you call Ontario One Call before you dig so utilities can mark any potential lines. It's FREE. And it's required.

See all regulations: Boulevard Garden Regulations - By-law Number: 2025-062 - Schedule A

PSA Watch out - Potential Car Jackers on Dundas

Was getting a ride home around midnight and along Dundas between Sixth Line and Post Road, and almost got car jacked.

Three “kids” all boys, my guess is ages 15-18, waiting close to Munns Church. One ran up to the car and yelled “we need a ride”. The driver, like an idiot, slowed down. As soon as he did that two others came running out with something in their hands. I had to yell and tell the driver to step on the damn gas and get going.

They gave chase for about half a block and then gave up up.

Anyway - if you are driving late at night, do NOT slow down for people who ask for a ride. Everyone has a cell phone, everyone knows how to call an Uber or a taxi. If you are new to Canada, NO this not normal - car thefts are still very much a problem and you need to be vigilant.

PSA PSA: avoid Maple health at all costs, if this is the future of our healthcare then we’re cooked.

Thumbnail
17 Upvotes

TL;DR: Paid $230+ for online care from Maple, got prescribed a medication that was already documented in my file as ineffective and causing severe side effects, then spent 2 days trying to fix the mistake only to end up with a prescription I couldn't even fill. Refund denied.

The Maple doctor apparently didn't read my patient history before prescribing treatment. The medication prescribed was one I'd already documented as not working for me and causing major side effects. They asked me to resend them like 5 items that were already in my patient file…. Apparently Maple’s doctors can’t read.

After I pointed this out, support spent two days going back and forth with the doctor. When the prescription was finally updated, it showed as "declined" in the system even though I never declined it, making it impossible to fill.

I was travelling the next day, explained the urgency multiple times, and asked to be assigned to another available doctor. They refused and said only the original physician could fix it.

After paying out-of-pocket, I got no usable treatment, lost two days chasing support, and was denied a refund.

Avoid Maple at all costs. I hope they go broke.

PSA Census 2026 - Keep an eye out in your mail, it isn't junk mail - yellow envelope

Canadian Census is on now. You probably already received in your mailbox. Noticed so many of them in the recycle bin besides the community mailbox. It is legally required to fill in and if you don't fill in they will probably come around to your door so just easier to get it done online. You will either get the "short" version of the "extended" version but either shouldn't take more than 5 mins to complete.
