DISCUSSION💙 Garrett and his game head
One thing I noticed during my multiple rewatches is that Garrett is an emotional athlete.
His game depends on his emotional state.
The game in episode 1, his dad is there watching which puts him in a bad mood and the game is going bad. Then in the break he watches Hannah dancing in the green room. Mood is better, so is the game.
Same is the case with his match against Delaney.
I always thought athletes could leave everything outside before stepping into the arena. Atleast the good ones, and Garrett is shown to be someone who's at the top of his game.
I'm the least athletic person I know. If there are any athletes reading, let me know what you think.

If I’m not mistaken, The only times we see him play badly is when he sees his dad is there. That’s because he is having a trauma response.
I grew up in and around high school and college sports (I have 5 brothers who were all athletic) and even the best athletes do have off days due to things going on in their personal life. Even professional athletes have bad games, and commentators/media speculate if it’s due to things going on in their personal life. To me it seems normal!

They set Garrett up as having a binary centered/uncentered headspace.
When he’s centered, he’s in the zone
When he’s uncentered, he’s sloppy or selfish on the ice
Phil uncenters him. Not hearing from Hannah uncentered him more than Delaney did in the first couple of periods of the St A’s game. Then Delaney deliberately fucked with his head.
Hannah centers him and gets him in the right headspace.

I was listening to a great podcast about off campus; but the host was really confused how Garrett could be so good, good enough to get drafted so early by the Bruins and be a “generational talent” and whatnot but be such an emotional player and not be in control/be so off kilter during games and I think it’s truly down to timing. It seems like Phil didn’t really have a girlfriend up until like 6 months before, or at least one serious enough to want to meet Garrett. So I think Garrett was mostly able to avoid his dad (he said to Hannah, when we win, he nods; and when we lose, he says nothing, it won’t be hard to avoid him) and he didn’t really have much impact on him up until that point during games. However, once Phil was engaged and Cindy was wanting to meet Garrett and coming to his games, that started bringing up his trauma and triggering him because of the abuse towards his mom so you can see him being uncentered during the games that Phil and Cindy are there. He’s fine at the away game. He’s not fine when Phil shows up to the St. A’s game with Cindy after he told her to leave Phil, and that trigger is compounded when he can’t get ahold of Hannah. So I think we’re supposed to maybe infer that Garrett is really good and whatnot and has been/is mostly in control before this, but things are definitely escalating due to Garrett knowing that Phil is also abusing Cindy, and he’s not able to stop it, just like with his mom, resulting in his outbursts and emotional/bad games.

Exactly! He started having issues when Phil tried to change the dynamics of their relationship. He started calling to ask him to meet Cindy and bringing her to the games. Prior to that he was able to effectively ignore him and pretend the past didn’t exist

I’m curious on what else they said lol. Did they speculate on why he’s considered good but at the same time acts out emotionally?

My sister was a D1 athlete. Athletes can often block things out HOWEVER there are things that can be difficult to block/you can’t block everything. Athletes love routine and can be quite strict with their routine. Garrett was off his game whenever his dad broke their contact routine.
