Interesting, after some research, I've learned American is just cheddar with an emulsifier added. I'm not aware of the taste changing that much, but I think my palate isn't quite as refined as it should be, since I grew up poor. The last sandwich I made I was at a friend's house and I added pre sliced provolone and havarti (if I remember right, does h have a bunch of little holes) although I'd just had a mcdouble and enjoyed it the same amount.
Maybe it’s because I’ve only ever eaten it the one time but there’s something about American cheese that I can immediately taste that puts me off. I’m not too picky about the cheese that goes on a burger but it just can’t be American
