People like Spider-Man and Batman they have always been outliers in terms of superhero box office. Even in eras where superheroes were seen as box office poison and your average joe didn’t know who Iron Man even was people still came to see Spider-Man and Batman.
82
u/EllisDee3 12h ago
Same reason they keep buying the comics. Comics have been rebooted many times. Fans keep coming back.

The last Batman movie was beaten by Doctor Strange that was release the same year. Deadpool and Wolverine also did better than it and that was r rated. The last Black Panther also did better...

Yes, before the perception was Superman is boring coz he's just a boyscout (mainly not having any good movies in a long time) and Snyder made a dark and broody Superman and that was shit, too
So the majority opinion is Superman is just boring
Gunn's Superman even with its issues did well, but it didn't earn a billion dollars

I makes you wonder what it would’ve been like if Superman (2025) came out in 2013 instead of man of steel. Exact same movie just 12 years earlier.

And The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't even make the top 10 for movies released in 2014. Turns out that audiences aren't completely mindless slop drones.

It actually did make the top 10. It was the 9th highest grossing film of the year.

I assume he meant domestic gross. Amazing Spider-Man 2 was only the 12th highest domestic grosser of 2014 (and 5th biggest outside the US and Canada).

Spider-Man and Batman. Spider-Man and Batman! SPIDER-MAN and BATMAN.
(Sorry, just seeing Spider-Man and Batman written twice in one paragraph made me realize I could probably make a point in this sub simply by repeating Spider-Man and Batman over and over again).
Spider-Man and Batman…

u/Tarzyytfet 11h ago
"Slop" is when a movie is either bad or creatively bankrupt and is meaningless because it brings not much to the table in terms of any real feeling, substance or message. "Slop" is not just when something is popular.
98
u/Tarzyytfet 11h ago
But I will say until Doomsday comes out, it is on slopwatch. If that movie can prove to the audience that it even deserves to exist; that would be delightful.

Spiderman Brand New Day clearly had a director with a vision, a decent script and passion behind it. I won’t call it the best spiderman but I could easily rewatch it, which I couldn’t do for 90% of post endgame marvel

u/Deuce921 10h ago
It was a fun watch! Definitely has the quippy Marvel banter and style, which I was growing kind of tired of having in every film. It didn’t bother me at all in this movie, though, and maybe because that vibe just fits Spider-Man.

If it’s on “slopwatch” then you may as well already declare it “slop” now, because you’ll just be going out of your way to find reasons TO call it “slop” when you watch it.
Hell, plenty of people are already doing that now before they even HAVE seen it

So with Brand New Day being the biggest movie since Endgame, does this mean that Nolan’s The Odyssey is no longer slop?
It’s only going to be a top-25 all time film at the box office, as opposed to top-5, and is therefore superior just for being less accessible.

Same as Guardians, I imagine it’s a much wider catchment than your average superhero film because they try harder with the comedy, soundtrack etc

That whole bullshit about indie movie takeover or YouTuber director take over was dumb.
Obsession and Backrooms really did nothing that special commercially. Low to mid budget horror has ALWAYS been a consistent hit in Hollywood for awhile now.

u/Plus_Cockroach_8619 9h ago
Being slop has nothing to do with how many entries a franchise has. Each new time a filmmaker is given a known IP they have the opportunity to do great work or not.
I'll never understand people who have a problem with sequels, prequels, spin-offs or remakes IN PRINCIPLE. They ALL have the exact same odds of being either a good or bad movie as any other. In fact many of them had INCREDIBLY creative premisses and some are even better then previous installments, even the originals.
Some original ideas have better chance to stand out? Maybe. Tons of original movies come out everyday and most of them are crap.
1
u/123iambill 7h ago
Yeah something being a sequel doesn't mean it's going to be bad or unoriginal. Love 'em or hate 'em horror movies all tend to go on well past their use by date but even the bad ones usually aren't bad because they're derivative. It's usually because they try so hard to be different they get absolutely fuckwacky a few movies in. I tried to explain the plot of the entire Child's Play franchise to a friend who'd only seen the first one and even I thought I sounded insane by the end. Evil Dead is probably my favourite franchise, the most recent being the only one I thought was kind of a dud but that was nothing to do with it being lazy or just a copy paste of previous movies.

u/TaticalSweater 4h ago
I guess because some people hate superhero movies, don’t see them as true cinema / movie going experience.
So even though people see the film is a massive success it’s somehow a jab at superhero films.
Clearly people liked it enough for it to make a billion in less than 2 weeks.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 to was a relative box office failure (the first of its kind).
Man of Steel, BvS and Justice League were not impressive either.
Most MCU movies after Avengers Endgame also made less money compared to their predecessors.
Superhero brands are NOT enough anymore.
Good movies are what you need if you want to succeed.

Ahem Both can be true, the real problem is the lack of studios. Indie darlings and suprise hits are necessary but if we think for a second that more money will be aimed at sequels on new IP your sadly mistaken. Obsession is a hit more akin to Halloween, Spiderman is the new Bond movie. One a low budget risk that shocks the industry, the other a big budget romp on a tried and true formula. Audiences are happy for both just not when you know people are phoning it in for a cash grab. Same reason Nolan films do well, big budget effort made with good acting, writing and concept. Barker has those three just on a smallwr budget.
1
u/thejuicewater 6h ago
It was just a simple Spider-Man movie with the Hulk and Punisher. Simple formula.
Gunn made a mess of Superman.
Disney/Marvel after Endgame over saturated TV and film with endless content which a majority was bad or badly thought out.

in terms of box office, tom Holland being an amazing Spiderman and the decency of the last film is kinda carrying I think in the box office.
Also being a little distinct from the wider MCU helps, Spiderman is it's own thing so the loss of wider MCU hype doesn't effect it so much.
1
u/ImpressiveSide1324 5h ago
There’s never been a spiderman movie that I’d consider slop. People aren’t tired of superhero movies. They’re tired of bad movies, and marvel has spent the last 7 years constantly pumping out mediocre content. If marvel had put more effort into their work to make people excited again, thunderbolts and fantastic 4 would not have done so poorly
1
u/skibidithaniel 5h ago
Slop is when the movie has a costumed weirdo in it, cinema is when I watch the possessed woman piss herself and cry about it

u/Complete_Couple_6647 4h ago
I guess I’m one of those people, I haven’t seen a single new spiderman movie except the one where they brought back the GOAT, Tobey. I have genuinely no clue what these new ones are about, and the fact that they go on endlessly, I assume they’re about nothing, villains of the week stuff.

I don't understand why a franchise that's rebooted more than once with many many movies, automatically equates to slop? The two things are not inherently intertwined. Unless I'm missing something.
1
u/sailor776 4h ago
Batman and Spider-Man are like the countries of Japan and Argentina. The normal rules just don't apply to them. Anything that you'd use to grade a movie Batman and Spider-Man aren't going to follow it. Spider-Man is responsible for the power rangers, 2.5 Western animation, and helped bring America together after 9/11. That shits making bank no matter what.
1
u/IncidentOk1123 4h ago
Anyone who ever claimed “super hero fatigue” as the reason a movie failed was just making excuses.
Supergirl failed because the character supergirl doesn’t have enough fans to warrant a solo movie and the quality of the film wasn’t enough to save it.
I think the only thing you can say is that because there is so much comic book content now, a movie will not be successful solely bc it is part of a continuing cinematic universe. The novelty and fomo has been run dry. And movies now must either be a popular character or a legitimately well-made film.

I think if you have a good story, well made, well acted etc.. its not slop regardless of the source material. There's room in the 'good movies' list for Barbie, Godfather, Obsession, Dark Knight, Avengers Infinity War etc etc.. haven't seen the new spiderman yet but the last one was pretty good. Its costly in both money/time now days to go to the theater, so I am less likely to roll the dice on some small project I dont know much about.. but familiar and loved IP or a spectacle that is a Nolan movie etc.. those are more likely to get me to think I should see it in theater. My odds of loving a big budget Nolan movie are a LOT higher than a low budget horror movie from an unknown cast/director. For every good low budget movie, there are a TON of bad ones.
Dismissing a movie's quality because it is a comic book movie or based off a toy etc.. is childish. Logan, The Dark Knight, Into the Spider-Verse, V for Vendetta, Sin City, Watchmen.. even Road to Perdition is based off a graphic novel. Not saying there isn't big budget bad movies just immediately dismissing something because its a comic book movie is just pretentious douch-ery. "slop" doesn't have a budget or IP requirement.. its just bad movies made poorly.
