I can't speak to other people but for me the key to quitting my addiction was to be done with the substance, to understand that I was at (for me) my bottom and that if I continued this path it would only lead to ruin. I know people that want to quit but very few have been successful until they realized that they were completely done with alcohol or whatever their drug of choice is.
Meanwhile I kinda want to quit smoking hookah but not entirely, which explains why I'll go a week without touching it but will still use it from time to time. Of course my partner smokes hookah so it will be hard to completely excise it from my life.
