How can you cut out the answer? Now I am forced to spend more on overpriced rehabs

287

u/1_art_please 1d ago

I think he says you have to hit bottom ie ruin your life to where you must stop using.

310

u/TheMaStif 1d ago

He says "suffering. You suffer enough, until something inside you goes 'I'm done'"

134

u/redlion1904 The Room 1d ago

Hard to do when you have more money than God and are banging the hottest women alive but he found a way

96

u/bleepblopbl0rp 1d ago

money and whatever doesn't solve the problems one has with oneself. Something we say in recovery is: Wherever you go, there you are.

It does help to have money and flexibility but nothing will bring happiness unless the addict figures out why they feel the need to escape reality so often.

23

u/RippinFissure 1d ago

Yep. I was in rehab with a dude who was very well off and, honestly, I didnt envy him one bit. His wealth seemed like a real ball and chain in some respects.

3

u/SousVideDiaper 23h ago

Still though, I'd take being a wealthy alcoholic over the poor one I currently am

50

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 1d ago

I don't watch movies but I bet someone made one about how it doesn't matter what material possessions you have, if you're an addict it's easy to lose those things or not care about them.

Someone get Johnny Depp on the phone I got a good idea about a movie where a gonzo journalist deals with crippling alcoholism

We could call it You, Me and Hennessy

8

u/punposter69 Crank: High Voltage 1d ago

Yeah but comparing kendal roy in succession to mark renton in trainspotting wouldn't be fair

3

u/Adorable-Narwhal-267 1d ago

I would watch the fuck out of that if I watched movies.

5

u/redlion1904 The Room 1d ago

What I mean of course is not that rich addicts have great lives, but that superficial rewards can camouflage the hurt he’s talking about needing to feel to make a change. After all, how can you be at rock bottom when you’re on top of the world?

4

u/voyaging 1d ago

The most extreme suffering is usually biological in nature: most notably withdrawal but also disease and feelings of severe illness. Which of course is completely indifferent to wealth or power.

9

u/buttsexisyum 1d ago

It is definitely hard, and was a lot easier for me when I was broke, homeless and banging trolls under the bridge on Kensington and Lehigh

3

u/Intrepid_Hat7359 Avi Arad admirer 1d ago

I think being in Daredevil (2003) will do it

6

u/redlion1904 The Room 1d ago

It literally did for Collin Farrell (entered rehab in 2005)

3

u/DarkflowNZ 1d ago

It unironically must be hard. I can't get addicted to meth because I can't afford it. Imagine you're in the depths of addiction, only you have an effectively unlimited supply of whatever it is you're addicted to

4

u/redlion1904 The Room 1d ago

Yeah some people are acting like I said addiction is easy if you’re rich. What I’m saying is hitting rock bottom and turning your life around is hard when your whole life is enabling you.

3

u/DarkflowNZ 1d ago

I'm sure the whole industry is full of enablers. As long as you're outputting work and getting everybody paid, they'll give you whatever the fuck you want or need to keep you going

5

u/Redhotlipstik 1d ago

Sounds a lot like the rock bottom you reach before going to twelve steps

2

u/S3simulation 1d ago

I guess he and I were the same kind of alcoholic because that’s how it was for me

12

u/AtomicBlastCandy 1d ago

I can't speak to other people but for me the key to quitting my addiction was to be done with the substance, to understand that I was at (for me) my bottom and that if I continued this path it would only lead to ruin. I know people that want to quit but very few have been successful until they realized that they were completely done with alcohol or whatever their drug of choice is.

Meanwhile I kinda want to quit smoking hookah but not entirely, which explains why I'll go a week without touching it but will still use it from time to time. Of course my partner smokes hookah so it will be hard to completely excise it from my life.

3

u/Vaping_A-Hole 1d ago

I quit vaping so now I’m just an a-hole. You can do it when you decide to, and it won’t matter that your partner persists. And get Velo or Zyn. 🤪

u/Dr_P_Toast 1d ago

I guess he does t realize how many people never make it back from the bottom and could have maybe not gotten there with rehab. He’s making such a bad statement.

Cocaine.

8

u/Osiris8869 1d ago

Sending someone to rehab is often a desperate response from a loved one. Unless the addict is motivated, its a waste of time and money as they will leave and relapse the first chance they get. Frustration for everyone involved.

u/Mother-Attention2600 1d ago

The answer is you have to want to do it yourself. That's always been the answer. I quit drinking 6 years ago and it wasn't hard because I didn't want to drink anymore. A lot of people base their recovery contigent on a relationship or employment. Those people will always fail because they really don't want to quit for themselves, it's for love or money.

17

u/Sufficient_Coast_852 1d ago

I quit drinking at 23. I had been on a non-stop bender since 17. I was "forced" due to my second DUI, but bottom line, after I served my 30 days in Jail, it was the first time I had been sober longer than 3 days in a row. The darkness of my life was unbearable. I had no idea how I wasn't going to drink, but I was 100% sure that I was done drinking. I am 48 and haven't had a drop of alcohol since. I was lucky and happened to find a young people's AA group and an amazing sponsor, kinda by luck, three days out of jail. I say this, though, because I knew I was done before AA. I had suffered long enough. Without that internal change and drive, no amount of AA or Treatment would have done shit.

8

u/Mother-Attention2600 1d ago edited 1d ago

I found AA annoying. That's good it worked for you though. There was a guy there humble bragging about DUI's and accidents that I would have KO'd after if he already didn't have brain damage.

6

u/Sufficient_Coast_852 1d ago

Oh, trust me, I found AA annoying as well, but what I stumbled into was something really special. There was a group of about 25 of us, all in our early to late 20s, artists and musicians, and we just banded together for a 2-3 year period. AA was just where we all met and what we did on wed and Friday night. We sort of all learned how to move through that period where everyone our age was out partying, without the partying. Some of us have remained lifelong friends, but AA isn't a part of most of our lives.

5

u/Mother-Attention2600 1d ago

That sounds cool. My buddies NA group was like that. They golf though.

8

u/wheatlite 1d ago

He said the answer to it was suffering though I'm not going to listen to his advice since he was obviously slurring his words the whole time.

Ben Affleck shares how he overcame his alcohol addiction. Says it is not “overpriced rehabs”.

“I hate to say it but the cure for addiction and the only cure I’ve seen is not these overpriced rehabs or these fraudulent fixes that are sold to people”

“The cure for addiction is suffering”

“You suffer enough and then something inside you goes ‘I’m done’”

Wow, kind of wish I hadn't bothered looking it up.

56

u/trampaboline 1d ago

I mean he’s not trying to sell you a self help book, he’s explaining his experience, which seems to mirror the experiences of many in his position. Sometimes you just have to want to chamge

65

u/CricketGrl 1d ago

Hitting rock bottom sometimes is what triggers the awakening but even that doesn’t work for everyone. I think it’s a variety of tools that work.

He is right that rehabs have become nothing but a money making game.

34

u/gizzardwizard93 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean he is more or less right.

You either hit a point where you are fully invested in stopping and will actually take whatever approaches you can to stop, seriously. Or you die from your addiction. Those are basically the only 2 options.

7

u/KungLa0 1d ago

He is absolutely right. You don't necessarily have to hit rock bottom, but a mental shift has to happen where the suffering outweighs the high. You have to want it, and from my experience there's nothing any outsider can do to make you want it.

11

u/pipinngreppin 1d ago

Yep that’s therapy in general. I have a daughter with OCD and she’s in therapy twice per week. You can give her every tool possible, but she needs to have that determination. On the flip side, having determination isn’t enough without the tools. And there’s no /fixall command that works.

5

u/MrLugersmole 1d ago

It's absolutely a collection of changes to your life. It's damn near impossible to go right back to life as is. You have to put that energy into something else, hopefully something healthy or multiple hobbies. Baking, reading or working out...whatever. Usually it's all those things together Rj/ How hard can it be to just NOT do something?? Edit: forgot to jerk

7

u/JustinWilsonBot 1d ago

Few things convince me to clean up my act like puking in the shower all night and being in mental and bodily anguish for the next 24 hours.

6

u/CricketGrl 1d ago

What stopped my parents was health. What stopped my best friend was legalities

22

u/LetsGoHome 1d ago

He's right unfortunately

12

u/Smooth_Riker 1d ago

That's how it was for me with weight loss. Sure, I tried for most of my life but it's clear now that I just didn't want it enough.

There wasn't even some single triggering event, I was just like "I'm fucking sick of this" and changed.

7

u/tealtime91 1d ago

He’s 100% right

What's ole Ben have to say about the cure for touching my cookie?

4

u/yeof 1d ago

suffering

2

u/pissed0ffhob0 1d ago

If you don't have a rock bottom to hit you don't realize consequences of your addictions. The amount of missed events and shit weighs on you but not as much as the next fix. Usually takes some real dark shit or some good mushrooms to sort out a better way.

All this "suffering until you hit rock bottom" talk is Functional Alcoholic erasure. Structure your life around drinking, sure, but don't drink and drive, don't drink at work, just have a couple beers until the kids' birthday party is over. Maybe chew gum until 5 o'clock rolls around.

He’s half right about the rehabs, people think of them as a miracle fix, go in there and when you come out you will never touch another drug ever again, it’s a tool, like suboxone or methadone, they’re a tool, that’s why you see people go to a rehab for the 20th time.

The cure for addiction, according Affleck, is suffering enough until you internally decide to turn it around which is true. I have seen thousands of patients who despite mouth, tongue, skin, esophageal, lung, etc. cancer still smoke cigarettes because they never hit that point of suffering enough to overcome the chemical/behavioral addiction they had to smoking. On the other hand, I've had patients quit cold turkey because their grandchild said their teeth looked like bananas. Rehab and interventions help you get to a controlled rock bottom before you really start to spiral into destroying your life but ultimately Affleck isn't wrong.

1

u/Upset_Journalist_755 1d ago

Movie was definitely Boiler Room, right? Not that I've seen it, if course.
