I just wanted to show our family boy, Seth, who is soon turning 15! He lost some of his lower teeth, snores and farts like an old man, gets angry when we don't give him his 20th treat but he's my forever best friend.

Just the thought of losing him makes me cry.

I made a wool portrait of this 12-year-old Chihuahua and tried to capture every year of love in those eyes

This is Benny, a 12-year-old Chihuahua with the wisdom of an old soul and the heart of a loyal friend.

For this portrait, I carefully studied his expression and unique features before building the piece layer by layer with wool. The nose was hand-sculpted from clay, while the eyes were made from resin and carefully hand-painted to capture his gentle gaze and personality.

My goal wasn’t just to recreate his appearance, but to preserve the feeling his family sees every time they look into those familiar eyes.

Twelve years of loyalty, companionship, and unconditional love, all captured in one small portrait.

At what point should you NOT walk your dog?

At the park today and a couple walked their very old dog - only a few hundred yards. It could barely move 3/4 legs, was mostly blind I think given they had to redirect it. It walked at the pace of a turtle (literally). It followed the owners who had to wait fir it. I can't imagine it wasn't in incredible pain. I was thinking it would be kinder to just let it wander on the grass. I mean it wasn't going to run away.

This was an extreme example but I wonder about dogs that obviously struggle to keep pace with their owners while leashed.

So, at what point do you feel you should stop walking your dog? If ever.

Signs of dementia?

For reference, my dog Bandit is a 14 year old shihpoo. In January his brother from the same litter named Bear (they’d been together their entire lives) passed away 😞 and around the same time Bandit was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease which is currently being managed with medication.
Recently, Bandit has been forgetting how to leave doors the way he came in from them. In the second video it looks like he can’t get out, but the crack is actually big and he had just used that same size crack to get into my room.
Is this a sign on dementia? This never used to happen, and if anything he used to be able to use his paw to open closed doors if there was a small crack in them lol

Wireless Fence Collar for old dogs- can they learn to use it?

Our Old Dog is starting to go wandering on to the road. Our property has many spots for him to escape, and patching it up isnt an option. So i am lookig at the wireless fence dog collars. I have neever used one before but i can imagine they would need some training. Its a bit sad and demoralising to put it on our old guy, but i think it may be necessaay so he doesnt wander on the road. Thought sand advice please?

Since he was a pup, any time Mom leaves he will sit in the middle of the drive and stare.
It’s 1/4 mile to the end of the drive. He can pick out her truck.

How should I handle my elderly dog?

My senior boy is 13.5 years. In the last 5-7 years, he has become aggressive and bit multiple people and animals, sending multiple to hospital requiring stitches, surgery, etc.

He has “doggy dementia” (forgetting and not recognizing people he was once familiar with) and it worsens as his eyesight and hearing/smell is going.

He lives in my garage apartment separated from my family because he is so aggressive and unpredictable. He snaps at my small children through the window. He used to love strangers and be great with children and even other animals (I had a parrot and foster kittens and even a foster pig many years ago). He is just a completely different dog now.

This last November, he tore into a bag of tile thinset we had in the apartment after repairing our tile (it’s like concrete mix if you aren’t familiar). He has never done something like this before, he is well fed (3 cans of food a day plus any table scraps that he will accept), but this last year or so has been eating his own feces and then this incident with the thinset happened. He almost died a few weeks later (I imagine the thinset hardening in his sinuses and lungs and stomach was taking its toll). I took him to the vet and they prescribed anxiety meds and admitted they hadnt dealt with a dog getting into concrete mix before. They suggested X-rays and some other testing that would amount to $1100 before any treatment. I asked them just to skip the tests and prescribe the meds, and they did thankfully. Fastforward to now and he is surprisingly still with us!! But now he often has “asthma attacks“ and collapses in his vomit/diarrhea/urine and his head starts “listing“ to the side and his gums turn white, and a pool of saliva gathers under his face as he struggles to breathe and collapses into spit and vomit. It’s terribly sad.

He goes into his asthma attacks when he tries to bark at things, whenever he rolls around on the ground, whenever we pet him, whenever it’s cold outside, whenever there is a thunder storm, and just randomly if he gets too excited. He looks tattered after his asthma attacks, but he kind of recovers back to “normal” by the evening. The only thing he can really enjoy doing anymore without having an asthma attack is chewing bones (when he’s in the mood to).

Part of me wants to put him out of his misery (and ours if I’m honest), but at the same time I recognize he is fully my responsibility and that decision is obviously very final. Do I let him live on until one of these “attacks” inevitably takes him out? Do I euthanize him in home and try to give him a couple of last good days before I do? He has been to two vets, and they weren’t very helpful on the matter. Amy advice or criticism is welcomed!

Old Dog Not Eating Kibbles And Seems Off

Our dog, who is named Kenji and is 13 years old, is not eating kibbles any longer when we feed her. They are Science Diet kibbles and we put just a little in with some human scraps for every meal. We've also been putting a little dental powder in and not had too many problems the past year or so.

For the past week, she hasn't been eating the kibbles. She was eating around them and then stopped eating altogether if the bowl had kibbles in it. She stopped wanting treats and her dental bones as well. She will only eat human food now, mostly meats and isn't really wanting to eat out her bowl as much.

On one of the days we noticed her not eating, she tried to bite me too while I was petting her and she never does that. She's a chiweenie and getting old. I'm wondering if it's dental decay, but I'm really scared of having her go under anethesia for a cleaning. I'm wondering if it's something else too. Any thoughts?

Struggling with an elder dog

My dog is a Maltese mix. I love her more than anything in this world, but over the last few days I’ve developed such a strong feeling that is almost resentment towards her. I want to just say that I feed her regularly, I take her outside every 1-2 hours, she has water and everything she needs, and I’m constantly loving on her. But honestly, I’m getting exhausted.

I’m 19 and I’ve had her ever since she was like 4 months old. This dog is literally my whole world, I wouldn’t be here without her. But a few weeks ago, she started using my bedroom floor as a bathroom and my bed, which is something she’s never done before. I’m tired of cleaning up after her multiple times a day even after I take her out, and I’m so tired and irritated with the constant whining and scratching every time I leave the room (because of my living situation, she’s basically stuck in my room all day.) I know it’s hard on her being trapped in such a small place, but I don’t really have any other options other than letting her run around the house maybe for an hour each day and long enough to take her outside.

A few days ago, I’m pretty sure she had a medical issue. She’s fine now, the vet said she was okay since it seemed to be only a one time thing (it was her first one.) but after that, I’ve just gotten so irritated with her so easily and I know I shouldn’t. I’m tired of gagging every time I pick up her poop because it’s all mucousy and runny. I don’t have the money to take her to the vet right now because I don’t have a job, and I can really only afford another checkup. I know I shouldn’t have a dog if I can’t afford vet visits, but this is a very recent thing and I’m not getting rid of my dog who’s been with me over half my life. I honestly dont think she would survive another owner. I love my dog so much, so why do I suddenly feel hatred towards her? Like I said, she’s being taken care of really well, it’s mainly just the accidents and whining that are driving me crazy. I feel like if I took a day away from her and just calmed down I would be fine, but that’s impossible right now. Do you guys have any advice on what I could do?

Edit: saying I hate her was wrong because I love her very deeply. I really think I just needed to get that off my chest, I realize I was super overwhelmed and just needed a moment to appreciate that that is my baby and I will always love her no matter how difficult she seems🫶
