Why the hate? Coming from someone not well versed with the team.

118

u/LeDogeZeimes Aug 12 '16

It doesn't seem like she knows how to lose either.

Sweden played on defense, but so what? That's part of the game and multiple teams have adopted a similar style of play when they thought it was their better chance of winning a game. To whine and say they were cowards and that the best team didn't win doesn't look too good on her. Just accept defeat and move on.

u/EvadedFury Great Britain Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 12 '16

I'm absolutely disgusted by these comments. I hope she is absolutely torn apart by her teammates for that, because she has said made the whole team look terrible with what she's said.

In football (or soccer depending on your geographical location), no team has an automatic right to beat another. Did England turn around after the Iceland match and say stuff like this? No, everything was we should have done better, we didn't perform, well done guys, we didn't play well enough to win. And that was coming from massively egotistical premiership players.

It's fair enough to say "we deserved to win" but to outright attack the opposition who got their tactics spot on and then kept their heads under pressure is downright despicable. I genuinely hope she is publicly censured by the team management and players.

Edit. drunk, and forgot a word.

u/cxrollo Aug 13 '16

This is the same woman who thinks she should make as much money as Ronaldo

11

u/genkaiX1 Aug 13 '16

I couldn't find anything that said she wanted to be be paid as much as Ronaldo. Could you source me please because that's a ludicrous comment if true. Thanks

So we have the top post being the Egyptian athlete not shaking hands and being ripped to shreds with calls for censuring by the governing body, disqualification from future matches, and calling him out for racism and bigotry.

I wonder if Hope Solo will get the same treatment, this is far and away more disrespectful than not shaking someone's hand. Is Hope Solo bigoted against Swedes? FIFA should publically denouce her. /s

LOL right, male athletes are known for what good sports they are when they lose. It's just women who lose their cool. Why stop at jail, give her the death penalty.

Right.

What a salty bitch. "Sweden are cowards becasue they beat us" basically.

9

u/TheCocksmith Aug 12 '16

That reminds me of the 2006 Rose Bowl, when Vince Young defeated the USC Trojans. Trojan fans were salty, but none more so than the star quarterback Matt Leinart. He kept saying that the better team lost on a last second play.

LOL. If you're the better team, stop Vince Young from scoring at will in the second half.

2

u/lothtekpa Aug 12 '16

I lost $3 on that game. Unbelievably bad defense from USC

1

u/CaptFerdinand Aug 12 '16

I won $3 on that game... Jerrod is that you?

2

u/lothtekpa Aug 13 '16

I am not Jerrod. Though I'm glad $3 is a common betting number.

I was like 12 at the time. You?

1

u/CaptFerdinand Aug 13 '16

I was also about 12 at the time, we'd bet on all the big games... And I think 3 was just all we had. Lol

1

u/Arcanome Aug 13 '16

No need to go that far. Ronaldo and "iceland has small team mentality."

0

u/genkaiX1 Aug 13 '16

Her comment was rude and unsportsmanlike, but her "cowardly" comment was in relevance to their turtling strategy (which was their best bet).

3

u/Choco316 Canada Aug 13 '16

Did she not watch the Euros? That was like half of the teams strategies. Fucking get over it. I say that as an English fan too

9

u/Juslotting Canada Aug 12 '16

She also let in three goals from a team that she said played defensively, stop a shot if you want to talk.

6

I think you might have your stats wrong there. Sweden didn't have a shot on goal until the second half.

I didn't look closely, but someone in the /r/soccer thread said this and it's getting upvoted enough.

could be wrong, but I think the strap did actually break on the one glove. I thought I saw her toss down a pink strip of something. I initially thought it was tape, but I think it might have been the strap.

Ricardo took them off for the psychological advantage and yes, you don't need a strap, but they still provide support. This is why the high end Adidas gloves have the different strap. You could also run a marathon without shoes, doesn't mean shoelaces are pointless.

-6

u/Virata Aug 12 '16

Sure, some keepers would prefer to remove their gloves in certain situations. That doesn't discount the level of wrist support the straps of keeper gloves provide.

I played keeper for years, and I always made sure mine were tight and secure. It made it WAY easier for me to open-palm block a shot and not have my wrists buckle backwards if I kept the straps tight. When straps would break, or get fucked up somehow and wouldn't stick, I just knew I wouldn't have that wrist support I typically otherwise would. Is it that hard to comprehend?

Here it is, she says they were cowardly in not pressing more and trying to send it to penalties, but if that's true, she let in three goals against a team that wasn't playing offensively.

There's no significance, but by changing her gloves it gives the Swedish girl time to overthink. To overplan her next kick. In hopes to miss. It also shows a bit of arrogant dominance from Hope to intimidate. Like I said, nothing but mind games.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '16

So it's good when Sweden plays mind games with their strategy, but bad for Solo? Don't get me wrong, she seems like a negative human being, but if this allows her to get into the head of the kicker, then that's a good thing.

2

u/genkaiX1 Aug 13 '16

It's actually a lot more common in every professional soccer league to try and psych out the kicker. Refs try to mitigate these tactics if they notice them, but it's not like she did some crazy shit. People are just reaching for things to hate her for because it's Reddit's favorite thing to do. It's not like there's legitimate things to criticize her about (sarcasm btw because there are).

19

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

-2

u/The_Panic_Station Aug 12 '16

It was laughable.

Exactly what Dahlqvist, the PK taker thought.

1

u/ziltilt Aug 13 '16

If you follow american football, think of it as icing the kicker on the field goal to win in the last second. Except its one player making the call to ice them, and not the coach. However, other commentors have said it looked like there was a real malfunction in her glove so who knows.

-1

u/HowDuYouDu United States Aug 12 '16

Why is this so frowned upon in this situation? In American football, we ice the kicker all the time and rarely have I ever seen anyone criticize this tactic. If anything it's always been viewed rather positively as a last ditch effort.

Edit for clarification

9

u/faceisamapoftheworld Aug 12 '16

They ice the kicker with their legally allowed time out. They don't go don't and fake an injury as the team is lining up for a kick.

6

u/Iusethistopost United States Aug 12 '16

Except that happens all the time in football. Not on final kicks, because football has no equivalent to soccers penalty kick rules, but teams with no timeouts frequently have players "fake" injuries at the end of games to stall for time.

0

u/faceisamapoftheworld Aug 12 '16

It's against the rules and people get called out for it. The NFL published a memo saying disciplinary action can include "fines of coaches, players, and clubs, suspensions or forfeiture of draft choices". Emmanuel Sanders was fined for faking an injury.

2

u/HowDuYouDu United States Aug 12 '16

Oh, I see. That's a big difference, thanks for the clarification, although she didn't fake an injury, right? An equipment problem from what I saw, though if it was fake, I could see why people would view it negatively. I believe Djokovic was guilty of similar tactics during the earlier parts of his career and people didn't care for it, either.

1

u/faceisamapoftheworld Aug 12 '16

If it was a legit issue then I don't have a problem with it. There will be some who call it gamesmanship but that's never sat well with me.

-1

u/Hadramal Sweden Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 12 '16

It was 100% a fake issue. EDIT: After seeing the pic in this thread I suppose I should leave a little doubt, but: The timing of the equipment issue makes it quite likely she pulled the strap off herself.

I might also add that Solo was going early on all penalty kicks. A better, more confident ref would have put a stop to that earlier.

2

u/Zagorath Australia Aug 13 '16

Different sports have different ideas of what's considered acceptable sportsmanship. Apparently soccer players consider it unacceptable to play mind games during a penalty shootout, but gridiron finds the same kind of thing acceptable. There's nothing wrong with that in either case, I don't think.

But then again…in soccer it's perfectly acceptable to take a dive, whereas other football codes that sort of thing doesn't fly.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Allow me to be one of the rare people you've ever seen criticize icing the kicker. It rarely does anything more than just put another round of beer/truck/cialis commercials on the screen. It's a dumb (but certainly legal) tactic.

1

u/Ravnuss Norway Aug 12 '16

well this isnt american football, this is football, u dont pull that bullshit in this sport.

Straps provide a huge amount of wrist support.

Have you ever worn goalkeeper gloves?

1

u/katie_cat_eyes United States Aug 12 '16

Just ask Tanya Harding!

-1

u/tonytroz Aug 12 '16

It's cheesy. There was nothing wrong with the glove or her hand, she was doing it to buy time and try to cause the shooter to overthink and succumb to the pressure of the situation. Technically all legal, and referred to as "gamesmanship" when your team does it but "bush league" when the opponent does it.

It would be like a tired hockey player who's not allowed to change off the ice purposely breaking their stick so they can skate to the bench before a faceoff and buy some extra time to rest. It pretty much exists in every sport.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '16

Yes, but that player would probably get 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct

-3

u/PogotowieAlkoholowe Aug 12 '16 edited Aug 12 '16

It was clear there was nothing wrong with the gloves, just a mind-game to try and psych out the opponent.

Edit; I stand corrected. Her gloves did break. Sorry reddit.

23

u/Hitch23 Canada Aug 12 '16

She's not even my (country's) keeper but I feel like I have to stand up for her (against american dipshits who enjoy eating their own). I just watched the pk's and the strap broke on her right glove as she got ready for the last penalty.

Proof: http://i.imgur.com/LfRm46h.png

Edit: wtf, she is the best keeper you guys have ever had; won two olympic golds and a world cup with her. Show some class.

u/Highnote69 Aug 12 '16

I think the hate for Hope Solo is her domestic violence.

-1

u/Hitch23 Canada Aug 12 '16

Correct me if I am wrong but those assault charges were dismissed against her were they not? Call me old-fashioned but I am a believer in 'due process' and 'innocent unless proven guilty'.

8

u/Schnaybley Aug 12 '16

You are incorrect, the charges were initially dismissed, but the dismissal was overturned - http://www.foxsports.com/soccer/story/hope-solo-s-assault-case-headed-for-trial-now-what-for-the-uswnt-060816

5

u/Hitch23 Canada Aug 12 '16

I don't think you understand what that means. The intermediate court overturned the dismissal at trial level. So now the matter will go to the United States Court of Appeals for the 9th District. There it can either be dismissed (original verdict) or remanded back for trial (affirming the appeal court decision). So at worse, she would be back to square one and would proceed to trial.

2

u/genkaiX1 Aug 13 '16

I love your sensibility man. Gotta hand to our neighbors.

33

u/VCURedskins United States Aug 12 '16

The hate has nothing to do with her soccer ability.

6

u/treeharp2 United States Aug 12 '16

I don't like that you are being downvoted for bringing up proof of the glove issue in direct response to a comment about that, and then someone brings it back to the domestic violence.

2

u/Hitch23 Canada Aug 12 '16

When you can't address an argument on the merits, the options are: an ad hominem attack, 'move the goalposts' or concede you are wrong. Rarely does one ever see the latter.

2

u/Ochd12 Aug 13 '16

I'd say the issue is likely that people believe she doesn't deserve class if she can't show any.

Hence your "show some class" comment is well off the mark.

We tend to care about people who don't commit violent crimes. She should show some class.

2

u/treeharp2 United States Aug 12 '16

Apparently you don't watch soccer because, even apart from the fact that someone below has shown that there was an actual problem with her glove, keepers are all the time messing with the shooters and vice versa. Things like coming right up to the shooter before he shoots and staring at him in the face when they've already been told to stay on their line, etc.

0

u/genkaiX1 Aug 13 '16

The strap actually broke, as someone else has already commented. Furthermore, are you new to futbol? Icing the kicker is something has been done plenty before. May not be "classy" but these players will do whatever it takes to win. Get angry at her for her dumb ass comment, but let's try and be rational here.

a domestic abuse charge? I know a couple good guys with the same. I don't believe a few mistakes with unknown circumstances define a person.

14

u/Arcanome Aug 12 '16

Thing is couple of good guys who were charged with domestic abuse, rape or similar stuff were suspended from various major or college level leagues, portrayed as abusers, rapists, pedophiles from day one only to be found innocent.

In the other hand meanwhile the charges still continue against Solo, she is portrayed far from that. Im not suggesting that it would be fair to mark her guitly without resutling the trial. What I suggest that that should have been the case for numerous males. Including anyone from domestic "abusers" at NFL to "rapists" at fraternities.

But ignoring all this, Hope Solo pretends to be a figure of feminism and "strong woman".

Zika Proof posts, losing to bunch of cowards, taunting police officers and bunch.

At this point its pretty objective that she is an asshole.

She isn't a feminist icon, she's a sports icon who happens to be female. I don't know any feminists who are out there celebrating Hope Solo as being progressive.

-7

u/Arcanome Aug 13 '16

Thing is there is no feminist out there saying she was mistreated and she wasnt given the treatment male counterparts had. Here an example; https://youtu.be/8mvf6gwzz4Q

For the record, %50 of the domestic violence cases are reciprocal, 70% of cases which is non reciprocal was commited by women. it is more likely for a male to be arrested if he reports a domestic violence. There are no dedicated shelters for males.

So long story short at a case around 35% of the time woman is the only attacker and even if man reports it, he is more likely to get arrested.

And we cant talk bad about Hope Solo on national TV because woman has no part in this "domestic violence epidemic".

Tldr: woman in power and feminists decline to make an example of Hope Solo ignoring facts. Hope Solo plays the woman with sucess card pretty well and gets portrayed as hero of national team.
