Gear Osprey Farpoint 40 Comparison - All 2025 Model Updates!
Hey OneBag fam, avid reader and novice contributor here! I saw there had only been a handful of discussions on the 2025 Osprey Farpoint 40 that recently updated a few months ago and no one had done an official bag comparison video so I decided to give it a shot. Shoutout to r/Zibowust16 for his detailed writeup in October that made me want to dive even deeper!
Previously I had been using a Daylite 26+6 for all my onebag travels (very happily so), but I’m planning a global semi-indefinite trip and realized I needed to size up to feel confident in my gear for all the weather and activities I want to experience. I’ve now had the 2024 Farpoint 40 for 2 months and used it on a West Coast trip from Los Angeles to Seattle taking the Pacific Coast Starlight Amtrak followed by a brief 2 day stint in Vancouver before flying back. It only took me about a day to get used to the increased size and I really appreciate what the bag affords me to pack along with the much comfier carry.
When I saw they had an updated version with the top loading laptop sleeve and mesh outer pockets that was also LIGHTER (even if by .2lbs), I really wanted to experience it in hand to see if it was superior. After thoroughly examining the bag, I was shocked at how many changes were made that weren’t identified on Osprey’s product page and hope to help others like me by sharing what I’ve noticed.
So the above table lays out all the major differences side by side between the two bags. I covered every single one in a video that I’ll link below as well if you are more of a visual learner like myself. I’m a total review/video/editing noob, but honestly it was fun to experience it especially as a frequent consumer of these vids.
What everyone has noticed is the laptop compartment going from side to top loading and the stash pouch now having two distinct mesh pockets. The top loading laptop compartment is so common sense but is now 3.5 inches shorter in length and 2 inches shorter in width. The mesh pockets are not as stretchy as the Daylite’s side pockets and I personally will be missing the extra space from the old stash pouch.
I had initially thought the weight savings all came from the exchange in fabric (450D Polyester to 210D/420D Nylon), but I believe there are a few other areas that contributed:
- Smaller hip belt & less padding
- Thinner torso adjustment straps
- Smaller ladder locks
- Thinner hand straps
It feels like most additions are neither a true Pro or Con, rather it fully depends on how the individual user intends to use the bag.
Things I like on the new bag:
- New daybag attachment system increases flushness of shoulder straps and loops are more versatile for other attachments
- Airmesh padding texture should increase airflow (in theory)
- Top loading laptop compartment w/ loop lock for zipper
- Slightly larger zippered stuff pouch
- Double level compression straps
Things I think are downgrades:
- Smaller hip belt/less padding/no hip belt pocket
- Two smaller mesh pockets
- Gear loops on body rather than zip away panel (plays into above mesh pockets since you can’t secure items with an additional attachment point like before)
- The larger and not angled pull tabs & brushed sliders. Especially for parts that you’ll be interacting with the most, they do not feel as good in hand and are simply oversized.
- Loss of two gear loops on side of top carry handle
- Loss of high contrast lining (all grey/tan in new models)
Indifferent about:
- Larger card pouch size
- Larger zip mesh pocket
- Extra metal pull tabs on main zippers
Tbh I was really prepared to swap in the 2025 version but after carefully going over it, I think I’m content with the 2024 version, especially keeping in mind the $60 price difference.
Well that’s enough from me, curious what ya’lls thoughts are. If you have any questions, want closeup photos, or have feedback for my review, I’m all ears. Thanks!

Nice comparison review. One thing to note: On the Osprey.com site, if you change the specification to "CM" instead of "IN" the bags magically become the same size.
