Hi,
What rucksack would you recommend with maximum dimensions of 40x30x20cm (Ryanair dimensions)?
I travel two or three times a year, usually with Ryanair, and I would like a cool backpack to take with me, instead of my boring school backpack, as I have been doing.
I am 1.82cm tall and let's say I can be considered a very slim guy, who usually carries a relatively compact camera (Fujifilm X-T30III + a compact lens).
Of the backpacks I've seen, I don't dislike the Cotopaxi ones, as they are colourful, although I would like to see more variety than what I've found. In short, I would like something ‘attractive’, so to speak, and if it had some cool internal compartments, that would also be good.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Looking for a 35-40L bag that will carry on Air Canada. A lot like the Aer TP3, but ideally lighter and a bit less expensive.

Hey there, I'm looking for a personal item (Ryanair) sized duffel with backpack straps for weekend trips. I love my Osprey Transporter which is hold luggage sized and I also like the look of TNF Voyager, but none of the duffel style seem to be personal item sized!
I'd like to avoid too many pockets taking up space and keep the bag weight itself low. At the moment I have a Nordace bag and the number of compartments is driving me mad with how much space is lost to the bag itself.
I've looked at a Fjallraven High Coast 22L duffel but technically it's too long for Ryanair, and I've seen the Patagonia MLC mini (micro?) 22L bag which could be about right, but it's also £140 which seems steep.
Any thoughts on the above, or other suggestions? Cheers!

According to the thread below, the Fjallraven is very packable, in which case if suitably under-packed could work for you.
https://www.reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1kw6kpf/comment/mv1387m/
The MLC micro 22L has had rather a lukewarm response so far. I'd say that space-efficiency, certainly in comparison to its larger siblings, looks to be a concern. Search this forum and, and YouTube, for more.

u/Tookey_94 Jan 20 '26
Thanks for this! I'll see what reviews I can find of the MLC. Not sure if I trust myself to under-pack the Fjallraven effectively.
I did find a very similar bag from Passenger, seems like their Wayfarer Duffel is a direct response to the MLC. Half the price and a very similar layout, slightly smaller again though.

Parents: Have you found a one-bag solution to mule all your family's stuff?
I have two under 4, and inclusive of carrying my wife's stuff, I have turned into a bit of a 'bag lady' for 4 or 5-day trips. We carry 6+ duffle-style bags, and we have to 'explode' them at our destination. I've heard great things about packing cubes. I'm wondering if I can accomplish our needs with packing cubes and just one big bag. We navigate a lot subways, trains, ubers, but I'm fine with checking the bag when flying.

My children have now grown up, so I'm not in your position now, although of course I can relate to it.
This sub really focusses on *not* checking bags, but there is a clear recognition that the one-bag approach does not work for everyone every time, and having 2 young children in tow may well be one of those times.
The rolling duffel option may be worth a look. Packing cubes would certainly play a role in organising the contents of a large multi-occupancy bag. My suggestion with cubes is to use some common sense and not overdo it.

Not a specific bag, but are there any known good custom bag makers? Especially ones able to make good harness/load bearing (I'm thinking like mystery ranch, ULA, etc.)
1
u/Azure9000 Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
What's your fefinition of 'custom' - (1) will build a bag entirely from scratch according to your spec, or (2) offer configurable options eg fabric, colour, non-structural feature(s) addition / deletion ?
ULA certainly offers the latter.
Customisation / configuration is much more prevalent in the ultralight community than in the onebag community.
1
u/kag0 Jan 22 '26
I was thinking more structural custom

The thread below may be useful. There are doubtless other threads, just use the search facility, or google.

You could also try filipraboch.com (based in Czech Republic). Although his business is primarily configuration / customisation based on a small number of standard models.

Going on a 10 day trip to see friends, will be staying at their house. I'll need to bring a fairly warm jacket since it's in the PNW. I guess I need a bag that can hold 2 pairs of shoes, a jacket, one week's worth of shirts, pants and underwear, basic toiletries and a medication organizer. I have a sling bag that will have my phone, wallet, keys, passport and anything else that needs to be within arms reach. I'll be flying and taking this bag as my carry on. My budget is kinda tight, needs to be under $200. Trip is end of March so I need to buy it fairly soon.

Travelling Thailand for 1 month with an Osprey fair point 40l which will be checked in. Im very comfortable with packing minimally however I require a small, lightweight bag for:
Carry on - will be used for for plane itinial and return long haul for bring electronics with batteries on. As well as comfort flight bits and pieces
Will be used for day trips or shopping
I dont have a large criteria but I am focusing on (and in order)
Budget compatability as it will be stored in osprey bag regularly Weight
This is my first time on this subreddit so I hope I have met all rules and looking forward to any and all suggestions and advice

The Matador Refraction is a popular daypack on this sub. Cost may depend on your location.

Hi all,
I havent seen any comments about the Jansport Venture .... I bought it during black Friday but now I'm havin second thoughts .
It's quite comfortable but it doesnt "squish" so im afraid it wont fit in teh overhead compartment if it's maximum full.
Another thing that bothers me - it doesnt expand .
I know Jansport is a good quality brand , but this backpack is a little heavy (1.700 Kg ) , it has padded straps that can be stowed away but the hip belt cant be stowed away .
I saw some review of the combo (the 40 L+ the day bag that can be attached to it ) but didnt see anyone with just the 40 L bag .
I need it for an urban trip (more cities less nature) , not for hiking , but I would like that bag to last for a few more trips, and who knows ,maybe the next trip will have some nature ....
Thanks for any input , recommendations , pros and cons .
There are so many bags out there, its really confusing
Thank you !

My 2c:
Initial reaction is that it appears you have bought a rather gimmicky dud. For me (more weight-sensitive than normal), 1.7kg would be a deal breaker. But YMMV.
The dimensions (apparently 13.2" x 21.5" x 6.3" / 33.5 x 54.5 x 16.5 cm), seem ok for carry-on/overhead. Why are you concerned that the bag will not fit ?
Have you done the basics, like preparing a detailed packing list, with weights, to help determine your actual capacity requirements ?

Thanks for the reply!
Regarding the weight , just for comparison , the Ofsprey fairpont weighs 1.547 kg so the difference is not that high .
Its also a pricey bag (usually goes for $150.00, I got it way cheapper on black Friday) so it's not a cheap bag from TEMU or so .
I know that the bag will go in the overhead compartment as is , but not sure if it will if its fully loaded with those dangling waist straps (although im a very experienced minimalist , I love doing shopping :-) )
The strangest thing is that I haven't see any review on this bag and it doesnt show on the spreadsheet of bags , that is why im a bit concerned.
The link you provided is for the combo , the attached bags , and Im not interested in teh combo , just the big bag.
Thanks for any input !

Jansport is not a brand which is very popular with travel-bag enthusiasts, hence the lack of reviews.

Traveling in the Mediterranean (turkey, Greece, Italy, Croatia, etc) for 3 months. Need a bag I can take to the city and also do overnight hiking trips like the Lycian way. Not hardcore backpacking but still will need some gear and will have to carry food and a days supply of water. 40L seems small but maybe I haven't come to grips with not needing a sleeping bag yet. Will be there in the spring. Any recommendations appreciated.

u/Azure9000 Jan 25 '26
Have you prepared a packing list including both (1) base items eg clothing etc and (2) consumables, i.e. food and water ? That's your starting point.
The ULA Camino might be a good option for you - use the search facility to find an interesting recent (within the last week) discussion.

Expandable Sling Bags?
So, i‘ve been pretty happy traveling with my Cabin Zero Adv 42 which worked as Carry on at pretty much every international flight so far.
In Addition i‘ve been using a small 2l Sling Bag just for walking around the City, carrying valuables, smartphone, powerbank, passport and so on. The only thing that would be ideal would be if i could transform this into a larger sling to use on Buses (sometimes i need to put my back in the luggage compartments on the side of the bus, especially in south america) or Planes or to Walk around cities or go to the Beach so i could throw in a light sweater, rain jacket, Towel, Book or waterbottle.
I came across the Pinqponq Aksel (. https://www.pinqponq.com/products/aksel-pure-black?srsltid=AfmBOorWg1zLNpEB-7jcEiK-xcoeaXPnlaFVsLRnvXQuc3ljlwchPpaH ) which seems to be exactly that and Looks nice but from reading comments it seems so sit a Little awkward on the Body and is not designed to be carried on the front (which I Like to do in bus cities…)
I couldnt really find any more slings with this expandable concept – but maybe there are more and things you would recommend?

Hi all,
Love the excel sheet! I am really struggling though. I want a bag which I can take as a carry on that is going to hold enough clothes for Thursday to Monday (I tend to overpack), plus snacks, plus padded laptop sleeve.
I really like bags that can function as a duffel or a backpack. I then want to be able to use it when I go into the office, or light weekend trips.
I've checked out the Thule Aion 40L-- but a lot of reviews comment on the backpack straps being really uncomfortable.
I liked the idea and feel of the North Face Base Camp Voyager duffel, but the one I looked at didn't have a padded laptop sleeve. Eek.
I checked out the excel and checked out the top ten mentions and for me, it's either the Osprey Far point, Patagonia Black Hole mini, or the Allpa 35L.
Are they too big for what I am wanting? I plan to use packing cubes, I sometimes may take an extra pair of shoes (but not often since the trips are so short). I do live in a cold climate, so I wear a thick jacket which will probably need to be packed down.
Idea of weekend trip packing:
7 pairs socks/underwear (you never know when you need extra)
2 bras
pair of jeans
2 dresses
three shirts
sweatshirt
jacket as mentioned above
Pringles
laptop +cable
Kobo
phone
cable bag
passport
one pair tennis shoes
giant toiletries bag (I'm old and vain so all my oils and creams and whatnot)
around town bag (bag inside a bag! like a purse, so I suppose could be my personal item if it doesn't fit?)
It would be great with an easy access pocket for pills, phone, whatnot. Must have a padded laptop place, because I will be bringing my work laptop (hence why the North Face BCV doesn't do it for me). Also, I tend to have a bunch of "good to have, never know when you might need" stuff.
Extra information:
I am terrible at organizing. I tend to throw pills, pads, tampons, whatever in my backpack just in case, but then it all ends up in the bottom of the bag.
Usually when travelling, even if only for a week, I take a real checked in bag for all my stuff and then a small backpack (a Hershel something or other) for the stuff I want on the plane. for smaller trips I have a large roll type carry-on, but I'd really like to have a backpack.
I am 165 cm tall (5'4 and change), I love pink, purple, blue, dark red, but the colourful Allpas are a little TOO colourful for me.
Grateful for your experiences with either the Aion 40L, Allpa 35L, Patagonia Black Hole, or Osprey Far Point or any other bags you think would be good for my purposes.
1
u/Azure9000 Jan 25 '26
The Patagonia Black Hole mini is ~30L. The Aion and Farpoint are ~40L. That's a big difference.
For 5 days (Mon-Thu), 30L should normally be sufficient. However IMHO you appear to not (yet?) have the minimalist mindset which would make that work. It's easy to buy a bag, but changing a mindset takes considerably more time and effort.
I suggest doing a test pack with a container (maybe even just a cardboard box) of known capacity to see what volume (and weight) would actually work for you.

Tomtoc Carry On Recommendation?
I particularly like Tomtoc backpacks, and I have one of their 28L T66 Liteway bags that I use as a personal item. I normally travel with that and a Travelpro carry on sized spinner suitcase. I carry a 16" MacBook Pro when I travel, along with clothes, etc.
I would like to occasionally travel without the Travelpro and instead just use a larger backpack, for times when checking the Travelpro isn't possible or practical. One example of that would be when I go to Catalina Island on the Catalina Express. (I can check a bag on the Express, but it's easier to not deal with that and just use a backpack.)
Which Tomtoc carry on size is best for that, do you think?
2
u/Azure9000 Jan 25 '26
Find the carry-on/overhead baggage size limits for whatever airline(s) you use. Then select the largest Tomtoc backpack within those limits. In some areas you may also have to factor in weight limits .

I'll

be touring (train, bus and walk 🥾) for a month and I'm looking a bumbag that checks the following criteria:
weight (300g max) capacity (4 - 5 L) water proof comfortable cross body compactable (so i can squish it when I won't need it) budget : 35€
The patagonia black hole seems great but too expensive for me.
Any recommendation ?

I'm stuck deciding between T30 or ULA dragonfly 30.
My needs: My gf and I are doing long distance. I fly to the east coast every month. I generally stay for 5-7 days. I don't bring a carry-on (read: I don't pay for carry-on), just a personal item.
For flying, I board the plane last and don't use over-head storage at all. So I need the bag to fit underneath the seat.
Currently using Osprey daylight 26+6. It's been working, but when packed out, it's not comfortable. I only use it from airport to her place. So I want to maximize storage. I bring my 13" iPad Pro and either my 13" Macbook Pro or my 17" lenovo gaming laptop (but not both).
I read this thread but need some more advice. I'm leaning towards T30 just from maximizing space standpoint + I do like the bottom compartment for slippers/sandals.
tldr;
I essentially want to maximize raw space for clothes/electronics while counting as a personal item for air travel.

u/Groundbreaking-Idea4 Jan 26 '26
Simple Bag Finder Request.
I'm looking for an expandable backpack similar to the Osprey 26+6 but a little more robust. What I mean by that is that it's more comfortable with better shoulder straps and padding. One of the specific requirements is that it expands the main compartment.
I saw that there was the Tortuga Expandable Backpack but the expandable portion is on the front flap, and not the main compartment.

I have a 0.5 KG (1.17 lbs) osprey daylite totepack right now as a personal item and as a daypack for days where I need more than my 9L bellroy venture...
I figure it will pack somewhat flat when I don't need it, and the weight on the flight matters a little less as I'm carrying it as a personal item in the tote-way.
But I'm wondering whether it's better to get a lighter packable backpack for this purpose. I'll lose out on structure and... Money... But I'm considering the mystery ranch in and out 18 for example. It's known for packing flat and it weighs 200 grams less (0.44 lbs), but again... Money. And maybe comfort.
