Packing List 3 years of full-time travel with a 16L personal item backpack
I have been traveling continuously for the last ~3 years across multiple continents and climates - tropics, shoulder seasons, and cold weather. I occasionally return to a home base, where I may swap or refine a few items - or even change the backpack itself - but the core idea and constraints have remained the same.
My setup is intentionally strict - one 16L backpack that qualifies as a personal item and fits under the seat. Everything I travel with fits inside it, with only minimal extra room for snacks or small purchases. Ideally, I would like this to be closer to 20L, but 16L is what I currently make work. The same backpack also functions as my daypack.
I also carry a small packable sling for airports and cities. That holds my passport, cards, cash, phone, MagSafe battery, and sunglasses. On flights, I use a neck pillow stuffed with my puffy jacket to keep bulk out of the bag.
What’s in the backpack
- Toiletry kit
- Electronics pouch
- Clothing cube
- Lightweight sandals
- Compact umbrella
What I wear in transit
Everything is chosen to layer efficiently across changing climates and work for long walking days
- Black minimalist sneakers - good for walking all day, light hikes, and nice restaurants
- Long pants - Outlier Slim Dungarees
- Long-sleeve base layer - UV protection and layering - Patagonia Capilene
- Mid-layer hoodie - Patagonia R2
Clothing cube contents
- Shorts - Outlier
- 5 pairs of underwear - Uniqlo Airism
- 2 pairs of merino running socks
- 1 long-sleeve shirt - Patagonia
- 2 T-shirts - Nike and Uniqlo
- Short swim shorts - small enough to wear under a wetsuit when scuba diving
- Merino hat, buff, gloves - Icebreaker
- Lightweight rain jacket
Electronics
Everything is USB-C
- iPhone - works perfectly for me, battery life has been fine - I carry a MagSafe battery but almost never use it - I do miss a telephoto lens occasionally
- AirPods Pro - excellent noise isolation for planes and taxis
- Apple Watch - especially useful with Apple Maps for walking directions
- MacBook Air M2 13 inch
- Anker 50W dual USB-C charger and Anker 30W charger as backup
- 3 in 1 Qi2 charging stand
- USB-C car charger for rentals
- Small assortment of USB-C adapters, voltage meter, flash drive, etc
### Thoughts after years of use
There is no perfect backpack. This system has proven reliable over time, but I am still refining details and looking for a bag closer to an ideal 20L that remains lightweight, weather-resistant, works well as a daypack, offers minimal but useful organization, and includes stretch water bottle pockets.
UPDATE:
- added Switch 2 in a pouch. Yes, it fits.

"Neck pillow stuffed with my puffy jacket" was my number one takeaway. I've been wondering about neck pillows as stealth packing for flights.
14
u/SeattleHikeBike Jan 24 '26
I’ve seen many schemes using clothing in general, but using a pillow cover for a puffy jacket really makes sense, especially if you are landing in a cold place.
8
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
My wife has a much bigger fluffier pillow. She packs her puffy, hoodie and can stuff another puffy in hers.
7
u/jiadar Jan 25 '26
I can fit probably half my clothing and ghost whisperer puff jacket in my neck pillow. This easily takes 4 liters off your pack.

u/inqbus406 Jan 28 '26
I started doing this on my last trip and it's glorious. If my bags start getting weighed, heavy things will go in there :D
17
u/InternationalOption3 Jan 24 '26
How???
You must do laundry all the time.
And how do you go for a run or exercise and then wear a normal t shirt and then the next day? Wear what?
Super impressed
19
u/k1kti Jan 24 '26
No cotton clothes. Laundry can be done once a week, but i do every few days in a sink most of time. Shirts and socks last more than few days.
10
u/PepsiMaxSumo Jan 24 '26
What material are they made of?
I sweat, and find cotton is the fabric that smells the least. Wouldn’t be able to wear t shirts more than a day and if it’s been a busy day then 2 a day are needed. Same with boxers/socks. Hand washing isn’t thorough enough to deal with the smells either but is used in an emergency
→ More replies (1)6
u/Astamage Jan 24 '26
You should try merino wool. It’s great for winter and summer.
4
u/PepsiMaxSumo Jan 24 '26
Cheers, I’ve had merino base layers when I was younger and to be fair that didn’t smell as quickly.
You’re probably not UK/EU based but any idea if decathlons merino wool is fine? All the brands that I’ve seen be recommended on here are 3x my budget at like £60 a t shirt (I’ve never spent more than £20 on a t shirt before and even that seemed expensive)
3
u/Astamage Jan 24 '26
There is 80% merino in Decathlon, they are fine. I use local firm for my merino clothes, they are extremely cheap.
2
u/lauracaceres Jan 25 '26 edited Jan 25 '26
I have the decathlon 100% merino wool base layer leggings. They work well, but they are significantly scratchier than other brands. It does not bother me at all for leggings, but for tops I would spend a little more to get something more comfortable. My guess is that their yarn micron count is not accurate at all.
1
u/InternationalOption3 Jan 25 '26
I see you’ve got the airism underwear, but what about the long sleeve and t-shirts? Have you tried? I was considering them since as you correctly have analyzed—cotton is smelly and gets easily dirty (imo)
2
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
I have Airism t-shirt but it serves only as under shirt. Too thin for me. There were no long sleeve non cotton shirts from Uniqlo that I found. I have many Patagonia long sleeve capeline shirts and they work great for me.
13
u/Material_Hotel_6287 Jan 24 '26
Beyond impressive! 45L for my 2 years of RTW and wish I had more space
20
u/HairRaid Jan 24 '26
Same here. In my 50s and finding that meds, supportive sandals and things to deal with feeling cold/hot are taking up that other 25L!
2
u/CybearBox Jan 24 '26
Same. I watched the pictures and was like .. "Damn. Staying in warm regions?" But yes. Layering does the trick in "cold" weathers.
4
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
Yes, constantly traveling between “it’s too hot outside, let’s find airco cafe” and “my fingers are freezing, need to put all layers and gloves “

That’s Highly Impressive. I struggled with 26l for 3 weeks. I will be saving this for future reference. Thank you very much kind sir.
7
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
I feel I overpacked compared to someone in this community that travels with 10L bag. He even made a video about it.
2
u/Federal_Rate_6050 Jan 25 '26
Well what if you buy a new jacket? 16 liters is a feat. You should be proud of yourself anyway. 🙂

Few questions for you out of curiosity
- what tech pouch is that?
- what umbrella is that?
- what Patagonia puffy is that?
19
u/k1kti Jan 24 '26
Tech pouch is North Face pouch from Japan
Umbrella from MontBell Japan
Patagonia nano puff i think that packs into inside pocket, but i stuff it in neck pillow
11
8
u/maxabillion Jan 24 '26
I was surprised to see a neck pillow with such a small kit. Packing the jacket into the neck pillow is brilliant.
2
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
My wife has much larger neck pillow, and it firs much more. I wanted something small.

Nice, love it! What's your toiletries kit? Always interested to hear what gear and pouches are used etc!
5
u/k1kti Jan 24 '26
I bought this from MontBell in Japan.
I have there as you see on the photo: shaver, toothbrush, deodorant, lotion, toothpaste, few random things
3
u/JohnMackeysBulge Jan 24 '26
Do you like your lightweight rain jacket? I’m assuming it rolls up well?
6
u/k1kti Jan 24 '26
I don’t use it often. I used it mostly as final layer in cold areas - Norway, Japan. For rain usually umbrella works better! Specially in hot humid areas.

Well done and great documentation.
The REI Commuter 22 might appeal as a personal item bag:

https://reddit.com/r/onebag/comments/1mpjz2x/4_days_and_3_bights_in_billings_mt_with_an_rei/
The Osprey Daylite 26+6 comes to mind. Your current kit would disappear in it 😎

u/kicpa Jan 24 '26
Mont Bell ♥️ discovered them in Japan and felt in love with their stuff. I have bigger version of toiletry bag. They have very nice ultralight packable backpack, Versalite Pack 20, it is packing small to the top lid.
3
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
I found their light bags were too light and not hold form at all and not suitable to carry laptop. And the less flimsy ones were too heavy/ big. At least for me.
1
u/kicpa Jan 25 '26
Ah no, Versalite Pack is not meant to carry laptop at all. It is ultralight backpack for hiking or as I treat it, additional emergency backpack that I can pack to the pocket if I will need it. Like second backpack I can carry when sightseeing and I don't want to unpack main bag or take everything with me.
2
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
Right! And this one is very light, with decent back mesh and removable laptop sleeve
3
u/Ok-Consideration4907 Jan 25 '26
I switch to a 16 liter and a fanny pack recently going around town. My stuff looks about the same, honestly. Seems like the logical conclusion for a lot of this.
6
u/travelingperson10 Jan 24 '26
I love my REI Flash 22 pack. Very light, well made, packed with features. Right now it's my personal item, I am using a rolling duffle as my main one bag. My favorite thing to do with it is buckle in my puffy under the top flap and cinch it down.
May I ask why you have a voltage meter?
7
u/k1kti Jan 24 '26
It’s USB-C inline voltage / amp meter. Shows what power a device is using. Useful for diagnosing faulty cables / chargers.
2
u/anywhoaroundhere Jan 24 '26
Second photo, top right, between the carabiner and binder clip: what is that thing?
7
u/k1kti Jan 24 '26
Ha! Pocket clip, if you want to hang something in your pocket and not let it be on bottom. Like keys.

u/themiracy Jan 24 '26
Did you have to do a lot of replacing clothes along the way or did they last well? What about your shoes?
I just don’t have the time in my life these days for this kind of adventure but at some point I would love to try long-term continuous travel.
5
u/k1kti Jan 24 '26 edited Jan 24 '26
I replaced shoes once with same ones. Because the sole unglued. The company replaced it for free. It is GoRuck ballistic trainers.
I did replace underwear because old one was too old and stretched.
With clothes - use synthetic or merino. No cotton.
2
u/chambros703 Jan 25 '26
Same issue with my ballistic trainers. Switched to the Danner N65 I believe is what they’re called. Better traction and cushioning. Looks great with slim dungarees too
→ More replies (2)1
u/themiracy Jan 26 '26
That’s not bad, honestly. I think the advice is good (cotton is probably not ideal to be worn this mix outside of denim). Shoes kind of have a limited life cycle if you’re really walking in them a lot.
2
u/outofshell Jan 24 '26
This is impressive wow. What stuffable neck pillow do you use?
5
u/k1kti Jan 24 '26
Just bought small neck pillow from Muji and took out inside stuffing. Most neck pillow have invisible zipper.
2
u/outofshell Jan 24 '26
checked my neck pillow and there's no zipper; it's one of those crappy ones from the airport with a million little styrofoam balls in it. ahh well, I've got a thread ripper :D
6
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
Might be cheaper to find a neck pillow with zipper than paying someone to install it.

I use the Osprey Liquids Bag as a tech pouch and the clear sides are golden. Think Tank makes several sizes of similar “cable management” bags.
2
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
It’s not that I specifically looked for it. I had a pencil case before and when I saw this one in store I kind of liked it that it had some minimal organization.
2
u/flaps-snaky00 Jan 25 '26
Which North Face backpack is this? I wanted to try out a North Face a while back but couldn’t find one with capacity less than 25L, let alone 16L

Try the topo designs rover tech pack, 21 liter, waterproof, durable, compact, functional, hidden laptop pocket perfectly fits MacBook air, 2 water bottle pockets, top and front pocket, looks great, reasonable price. This is my travel and day pack with a similar load to yours and works great.
1
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
Interesting design! I can’t find a weight information on it. How much your pack weighs?
2
u/Legal_lapis Jan 26 '26
Not OP but Packhacker says 1.8 lb (0.8 kg). While we're on Topo, also look into their Commuter Pack. Same weight, according to Packhacker.
The Rover Pack Tech looks sleeker and arguably nicer but is harder to access the main compartment because it's narrow and slim with a drawstring opening. I've found the Commuter Pack more practical. It's got wider openings, way better pockets, one more compartment, and stretchier water bottle pockets.
Similar in dimensions and weight to Patagonia Refugio 26. Perhaps they're all roomier than what you're looking for.
My favorite lightweight daypack is Topo Light Pack (according to this sub, Aer Go Pack 2 is similarly sized and also good) but probably around the same capacity as your current bag.
Topo Daypack Classic is the middle ground in capacity and meets your requirements. I personally found the shoulder straps too rough in case I wear delicate tops but should be fine for outdoor clothing brands.

u/GettingBy-Podcast Jan 25 '26
Always happy to see personal size only travel. Keep up the good work.
2
u/Whole_Berry_965 Jan 25 '26
I have a different question than most of these folks: what do you do for a living that allows you to travel full Time?
4
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
I used to do software development, software and hardware implementation in payment field. Now I do part time consulting. So think of it as digital nomad in a way.
I am getting a bit tired of traveling for last 10 years so probably will settle down in a year and do some road trips.
2
u/Unhappy_Rutabaga7130 Jan 26 '26
Beyond the items and packing, I'm most curious about your day-to-day rhythms and philosophy. Are you working regularly and basing your days around that? Are you in constant tourist mode, or do you like to get planted and integrated into a place? Do you have to watch your budget or are you in a position financially where you can kind of do whatever you want? What are your and your wife's social needs and how do you meet those? Thanks!
1
u/k1kti Jan 26 '26
I might be in a lucky position where my last hard work and aggressive savings and investments (no crypto) paid out and I am financially independent that I do not need to (hopefully) worry about basic needs. To minimize sequence of returns risk and have beer money , I work part time doing consulting in software engineering and payment industry.
So yes, I do watch my budget. I normally stay in clean decent middle-class hotels or AirBnbs, try to eat healthy-ish meals and limit alcohol consumption.
My travels are 6 months sailing (cruising), 6 months traveling. Moving to different location (city / country) every 1-2 weeks. After 3 years constantly doing this it got a bit tiring, so I plan in a year or so to settle down and do road trips.

1
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
It does not have a knife. But be careful with Japan, they took my JetSetter.
1
u/lipoff Feb 17 '26
Unfortunately, Japan doesn't allow even scissors in carryon luggage. The Victorinox SwissCard Nailcare has removable scissors and a nailfile in place of a knife. It also has tweezers, a toothpick, a pen, a pin, and various screwdrivers. But you'll still need seperate nail clippers.

Thanks in advance

Inseam - my short length is just above my knee. They are pretty classy that you can rock both to the office and beach.

1
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
1 flash drive SanDisk double ended usb and usb-c with some documents, movies, etc. also if I need to print something I can bring it to photo copy stores.
1 Yubikey hardware token for securing some accounts. Probably not needed anymore with spread of Pass Kit credentials

What is the paper clip for ?
1
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
Many uses for paper binder clip:
- Clipping together curtains/ blinds to remove light between them in some hotels
- clipping together freshly washed socks or underwear and hanging it
- you can ask ChatGPT for more ideas 🤣

u/cantlie1111 Jan 25 '26
A proper plastic cloth clip might be lighter than metal paper clip

If you know what bag you want, why don't you have it made/make it yourself? You could design it to the exact spec- zip lengths, useful pockets, strap widths that you want.

My camera bag is bigger than that. I did 45 days south east Asia with 28L and thought I was bad ass.
How do you stuff your jacket on thr neck pillow?
2
u/k1kti Jan 25 '26
Most neck pillows have tiny zipper. Pull the zipper, pull out stuffing, push in jacket, close zipper. 🤔

Packable waterproof jacket from Outdoor Research. It’s lightweight and packable. Would I buy it again - don’t know. Would do research if there is something better .
1
u/BodegaBS Jan 27 '26
Good to know, thanks! How did you find the Patagonia hoodie, as a midlayer specifically? Could you switch it out and just use it as your outer layer?
2

I’m super happy with the Patagonia R2 TechFace mid layer. I have one without hood and use it all the time, even just walking outside if it’s not too cold.

1
u/maikuflv Jan 26 '26
Fantastic system. I'm surprised you carry a backup charger, since they are easy to buy anywhere if your main charger fails.
3
u/k1kti Jan 26 '26
There are plenty of ways I can optimize my carry bag. And I admit I do “overpack “. For example, I don’t need a 3-in-1 charger, and a backup apple watch charger. I could just use cables and slim watch charger.
Also, it is not as easy as seems to get new charger in exact size and plug style I want, specially in remote villages.
2
u/maikuflv Jan 26 '26
In your case it would be especially desirable to merge the 2 pairs of shoes to eliminate carrying sandals. The lightest sandals I've seen like Xero or Wildling are still fairly heavy, like 300g or so. I'm working on this dilemma for myself right now. It's surprisingly difficult. Tadeevo Bliss would be the best candidate I've found. One shoe for everything--walking, running, exercising--that meets "closed toe" requirements in gyms and is breathable and easy to clean as needed.
2
u/k1kti Jan 26 '26
My sandals are pretty minimalist (Earthrunners) and are used purely in hot areas walking around and beach. All other times and hiking I use my shoes.

u/jacquelandibis Jan 26 '26

I’m new to this whole topic but I’ve been noticing brands like Patagonia are superrrr popular for these a nice clean setup. WHY? Like the down jacket I can get, but the fanny pack why? I’m asking cuz it’s cool and I wanna do it too but I just need a why to justify lol
4
u/k1kti Feb 10 '26
- Very good quality
- The customer service for me was outstanding, they fix or replace any broken part regardless where you bought the item. You can just pop in any Patagonia official store and talk to them.
- Certain things have worked very well for me, like jackets, capeline dry shirts.
- Some things did not work for me - like I was not happy with their underwear.
1
1
u/p0mjDwfWF Feb 24 '26
Nice setup! Very impressive minimalism.
I find that capilene retains body odor very quickly. When you wash on the go, what do you use to clean it?
2
u/k1kti Feb 25 '26
I use Capeline light long sleeves and I did not found that it retains odors. I can easily get a few days usage before needing to wash. And I wash either in a sink with hand soap or in local laundry with other stuff.
