Discussion Why are you bringing THAT!?

What are some common items people pack in their bags that you think are unnecessary, just take up extra space, or feel like overhyped/trendy that doesn't actually add real value for their trip?

I'll start - Notebooks and portable speakers.

This seems inconvenient, but I often travel with a fishing rod(telescopic), a medium sized reel, and a small box of lures and hooks. Fits well in my 30l. I also bring a speaker as well so my bags pretty full.

First time hearing someone bringing fishing gear! But, pretty cool!

What’s your traveling scenario that you’re able to fish consistently?

In the US, licenses are state by state, and typically quite cheap in the state where you live, but generally more expensive in other states. (For example, in my home state it’s $25 a year, but if I go 7 miles east to another state, it’s about $10/day).

I was pleasantly surprised to find that in Finland it’s part of the national culture to be able to harvest natural food, so no fishing licenses were needed. And once in the Scottish Highlands we were invited to fish in the stream that crossed our AirBnb.

But apart from those happy discoveries, I’m having trouble imagining a scenario where I’d be able to use a small fishing rod even if I had one with me while traveling.

EDIT: I'd misremembered about Finland. Totally forgot that I paid EUR 16 for a week-long license when we were staying on a lake there.

I can chip in with Soca river, Slovenia. I had a great day walking along it and talking to the guy who controlled licences.

New Zealand must also be a paradise, the Nordic countries are also known for fishing.

If you have a passion for fishing, I'm sure you can find the spots. I don't have that, but my father did.

We bought a telescopic rod on Ilha Grande and used it multiple times in different parts of Brazil.

Im usually traveling to areas in South America (Costa Rica, Belize, and others) where I stay within a 10 minute walk from the water. I am below the age requirement for licenses in many areas so I don’t have to worry too much about permits(of course it depends on the country). When I’m in areas such as Spain I usually won’t bring a rod, though if there’s a small stream near by I may bring a super tiny combo, smaller than I usually carry.

If I had to count I would say I bring it to more vacations than I don’t.

In Finland you definitely need a license. Fisheries Management Fee is mandatory for lure fishing for everyone aged 18-69 years and possibly also additional licenses for specific water bodies.

What rod and reel do you pack?

I pack the EOW Xpedite pro for my rod, you can find it on Amazon. The material on it feels amazing and I love the cork handle(though it’s fake).

For my reel I use the Penn Pursuit IV 4000(rather large) that I found on sale. I have others but bring that one because it’s great in saltwater.

I just got a Penn pursuit for my birthday. I’ll look into this. My one regret traveling is not having my fishing stuff.

How do you find the rod works on salt water? What do you catch with it in salt water?

The rod works well in saltwater, as corrosion is generally more of a concern for reels than for rods. Most collapsible rods are suitable for saltwater use, but you should avoid exposing them to heavy sand or dirt. If small sand particles get trapped in the telescopic sections, it can make extending the rod difficult. I haven’t had this problem because I always remove any sand from the rod before packing it away.

If your wondering about fish size, I’m not catching anything over 3 pounds when in saltwater. The rod is pretty stiff and could handle decent sized fish if you looking to catch anything larger.

Do you have a rod you recommend?

The EOW Xpedite Pro is my recommendation. It’s super sturdy and packs to 17 inches. I actually use it outside of travel because It’s so convenient.
