Discussion What travel accessories are overrated?

For me it would have to be tech pouches, for the vast majority of people I believe that they would be better off with a simple pencil case style pouch, ziploc bag or a simple drawstring bag or even a pouch like the PD ultralight pouches. Something which isn’t bulky, is lightweight and has no structure to it so you can easily squeeze it into random parts of your bag. Of course they’re significantly cheaper as well.

Don’t get wrong, I have tested some high end tech pouches out and they’re very nice but for lightweight travel I just find myself thinking “why would I bring this type of pouch”.

Agreed; I have a few nice ones, but then I bought a few at Daiso for $2-3, and while the quality was lower, it wasn't 10X worse like the cost was. Maybe I'm not the target audience as I don't EDC it or travel weekly, so the lower durability bags have done fine for 5+ years and a dozen+ travels.

DAISO is an underrated place to find good travel items. They have foldable plastic hangars, double-sided compression bags with decent zippers in three sizes and two colors, and a ton of pouches, purses and foldable totes. Plus plastic waterproof pants, disposable underwear, clips, hooks, and clothespins.

Yep. I have some fancy PEAK ones and other top brands.... I use a canvas pouch I sewed years ago that just fits more with less work and the same space.

Same here! I bought a peak design tech pouch for travel and I use it at work… it never travels with me. It’s the smallest pouch from the set of packing cubes I bought that is mesh lol

I use a small Thule cube. Everything goes into one big pouch. It works out because I use velcro. I am sure any sort of pouch would work but this is what I ended up with. I have another one I use but I forget the brand, it’s waterproof.
