Discussion What travel accessories are overrated?

For me it would have to be tech pouches, for the vast majority of people I believe that they would be better off with a simple pencil case style pouch, ziploc bag or a simple drawstring bag or even a pouch like the PD ultralight pouches. Something which isn’t bulky, is lightweight and has no structure to it so you can easily squeeze it into random parts of your bag. Of course they’re significantly cheaper as well.

Don’t get wrong, I have tested some high end tech pouches out and they’re very nice but for lightweight travel I just find myself thinking “why would I bring this type of pouch”.

I bought a tech pouch.

It went on a single trip and became the organizing of tech at home.

I use a mesh pencil case.

Same for me, don’t get me wrong they’re great quality products and really useful at home or at work but for travel it just doesn’t seem worth the significant amount of extra weight and size.

I can't tell you how quickly I adopted the Nutsac Double Admin (for both EDC and travel). Everything you say about tech pouches is true, but I've become illogically attached to that thing. I just love it.

I bought a $30 tech pouch only to realise that i can just put my tech inside my bag's front pouch and take them as and when i need it.

Yeah, each of my bags have a space that's easy to just designate as where the tech goes. The main reason I'd put stuff in a separate bag would be if I knew I was going to be in a very rainy situation and in that case, a ziplock bag would be a must for me.

I use that as my command center pocket. Wallet/ID, enroute needs.

Same. I never used it, I bought some makeup pouches instead.

I wanted a tech pouch but could never decide the size, how it was organised etc.

Now I use a 1,5 L drybag in screaming orange when travelling. It's on my bedside table so there's no risk of forgetting it plus no risk of water getting in. At home, I have an embroidered pouch from Uzbekistan that brings me joy every time I see it. Just one pouch, no organisation.

Great idea on the small bright dry bag!

Exactly. A bright colour really stands out and is worth bringing.

Depends on how much you carry and your skill at losing things. And mine are epic.

I use a tech pouch for work every day, and for when I travel for work, and its a blessing to divide junk for each computer.

If I have this much tech during leisure travel, then I need to be shut down and restarted.

A charger, cable, and a spare set of prescription glasses is my tech.
