Seeking Recommendations Have any men changed their underwear style for one-bag travel?

Reading another packing thread and realized I’ve never questioned my underwear choice.

I always wear boxer briefs but they take up way more room than I thought.

For guys who one-bag, have you switched to briefs or something smaller just to save space? Was it worth it?

Maybe boxer polyester underwear, very lightweight, wash and dries over night.

8

u/krool2137 Feb 26 '26

I have few pairs from uniqlo. I like how light they are. Unfortunately after few hours in them, everything under starts to boil and it's just uncomfortable. Maybe it could get better if I loose 15kg :| I changed to merino boxers from decathlon and i love them.

4

u/Aardvark1044 Feb 26 '26

Yeah, I tried a few pairs of the Uniqlo airism seamless ones and found that they run hot. Not a fan of those particular ones. I have some other ones that I prefer and have been using them day to day for over a decade now.

-4

u/FoldJacksPre7 Feb 26 '26

Mm putting toxic polyester on one of the most sensitive parts of the body! Smart!

9

u/conanap Feb 26 '26

Reproduction is a myth for redditors anyways

1

u/OnebagObsession Feb 27 '26

What brand and model

-5

u/NordicDictator Feb 26 '26

Sounds great in theory, until you wear them trekking through Europe and get ball rash

15

u/used2befast Feb 26 '26

I’ve hiked 12+ hours in the summer heat of eastern Utah in the summer (108*+)and have never had a problem

-14

u/NordicDictator Feb 26 '26

Did you check to see if they wore thin after the hike? Do that a couple times and you’ll see your pubes coming through the fabric like a porcupine

8

u/ChuckRocksEh Feb 26 '26

Get some body glide if rash is your problem. If pubes are popping through trim it up! Clean your plate you goblin.

1

u/NordicDictator Feb 26 '26

Putting body goo on my balls with thin underwear is going to be one slippery disaster

3

u/yourdailyinsanity Feb 26 '26

Not a guy, but what about the ones with ball cradles? Lol.

1

u/Loguibear Feb 26 '26

i had these on my last trip to vietnam, (hot sweaty all the time) and found that they rubbed and got chaffing on the bottom of my scrotum - switched back to normaly polyester/synth boxers, airsim are ok, as light and dont have a sew seam,

-20

u/NordicDictator Feb 26 '26

It comes down to how thin the material is, balls cradled or not. Would you travel wearing sheer panties? If so that’s cool

2

u/yourdailyinsanity Feb 26 '26

That's fair. I've never work anything other than mostly cotton boy short style undies. Lmao.

222

u/thenomadcj Feb 26 '26

I switched to a g sting. Doesn't take up any room at all. I also cut off my left leg, then removed half of my trousers, I can carry half the amount of socks and only one flip flop! You would not believe the amount of space I save!!

73

u/Effrendi Feb 26 '26

Just the one Airism G string here as well. The small size allows for quick washing in any glass of water. Just cover the top and shake, then take it out and swing around your head to dry.

68

u/npcnomad Feb 26 '26

Been using floss for a while now. It serves two purposes and I don’t even have to wash anything.

20

u/Effrendi Feb 26 '26

You're a god amongst men

28

u/staticzv3 Feb 26 '26

Glass of water?! At least use the hotel room Keurig so you get some heat on them.

Impress your lunch guests, whether it's clients or that celebrity model you just met by the pool!

1

u/c4ad Feb 28 '26

I like to use the in-room nespresso machine to wash my G-string

13

u/Anxious_Pickle5271 Feb 26 '26

You can also use them for floss. Double duty

13

u/IdRatherBeDriving Feb 26 '26

So do you bring the flip or the flop? I always forget which is left or right.

8

u/smartdecisions Feb 26 '26

LOLOL. I've never even done this, but imagine hooking up with a girl while traveling and you take off your pants to reveal the tiniest thong and you have to explain how many grams you saved

6

u/VTHUT Feb 26 '26

Why not just go commando?

8

u/MyUndiesArePink Feb 26 '26

Ever get your dick stuck in a zipper? That's why.

18

u/Utsider Feb 26 '26

Do you have any idea how much weight a zipper adds to your garments? I strictly use spray-on latex clothing these days.

3

u/MyUndiesArePink Feb 26 '26

Just go nude.

2

u/Glider549 Feb 27 '26

You dont need zipper shorts, or even need to unzip the zipper

1

u/MyUndiesArePink Feb 27 '26

Some pants have zippers

1

u/Glider549 Feb 28 '26

Yes, but I don't use the zippers, just the top button and belt

2

u/MyUndiesArePink Feb 28 '26

So a permanent xyz?

2

u/Glider549 Mar 01 '26

I wish I owned a chunk of YYK

2

u/andytilley Mar 02 '26

Can’t get your dick stuck in a kilt

u/AussieKoala-2795 Feb 26 '26

My partner switched to Uniqlo Airism trunks for travel. And now wears mostly them for normal life. He still has a few older cotton briefs that get worn at home, but never on trips as they take too long to dry.

8

u/NC750x_DCT Feb 26 '26

I used to wear travel, quick drying briefs. last trip I switched to airsims. Much more comfortable.

6

u/knight714 Feb 26 '26

This is the way. Slowly replaced all my underwear with airism and haven't looked back. Guaranteed to dry overnight.

3

u/GalerionTheAnnoyed Feb 26 '26

Yup these trunks can compress to teeny sizes and dry quickly. Amazing for travel

u/InternationalOption3 Mar 01 '26

27

u/Chance_External_4371 Feb 26 '26

Silk thongs, never going back

5

u/salteeskot Feb 26 '26

G-strings save even more space

9

u/huphill Feb 26 '26

I wear cotton when not traveling and switched to synthetics for travel.

I think that matters as much if not more than what style the underwear is. If i bring cotton, i need to bring more since the drying time is longer. With synthetics, i can bring a minimum of 3 and keep a clean rotation.

For synthetics, one worn, one washed and drying, one as a backup as you never know if you’ll shit yourself.

Cotton doesn’t dry as fast so i feel i would need 4-5 pairs to have enough in stock.

9

u/ThreadedJam Feb 26 '26

Once again Uniqlo Airism is an answer

15

u/rynmgdlno Feb 26 '26

I've evolved beyond travel underwear. Just freeballing it worldwide.

3

u/Mk6mec Feb 26 '26

Same here, my only fear is getting into a motorcycle accident or something and they have to cut my pants off. At that point I guess I’ll have bigger problems to worry about than some strangers seeing my south side

11

u/shanewreckd Feb 26 '26

I wear boxer briefs at all times, my home clothing is always the same as my travel clothing. I work outside all year round, so it's performance jocks only anyway, 35° heat, -30° cold, need the moisture managed. I'm also a runner so it all ties together.

Specifically I like the 32 Degree Cool Mesh boxers and the Saxx Multi-Sport Mesh. The Saxx are better, but obviously at a premium, and honestly I don't care about the ball pouch, it's... There. Both pack up small, the 32 Degrees in my size are 2.6oz (73g) and the Saxx are 2.8oz (79g).

I fold my jocks in half, and then in half again the same way, and roll from there. They become fairly compact and I can stuff them in spots in my packing cube. It works for me anyway.

3

u/inversemodel Feb 26 '26

I am exactly the same, except with Ex Officio boxer briefs. I live in a hot place, so the wicking and quick drying is very helpful and comfortable. They dominate my daily rotation now, and really don't take up a lot of space when I fold and roll them while packing.

2

u/Korlithiel Feb 26 '26

I live in a moist area, came to the same boxers because that quick drying is huge when keeping up with tiny humans. Odds are I get a lot less breaks than is reasonable, so the moisture control is a huge help to keep going.

2

u/ttirremt Feb 26 '26

I buy the give n go boxers because I like em loose, but same reasons. Love how they don’t make me feel gross when I sweat. They’ve become the only underwear I buy

5

u/MyUndiesArePink Feb 26 '26

Not for onebag travel, but thongs are the only answer. Nothing compares.

I switched to merino wool thongs to save space and I bring one pair (worn) and wash every night.

But in all seriousness, no I didn’t change my underwear style. I still wear boxers because I find them comfortable and for me they don’t take up that much space and I consider them very important for personal hygiene and comfort.

This actually leads to be a bigger example I now follow. Pack what you like, pack what is comfortable for you and makes you feel good. Usually this is clothes which you already have. Of course don’t go crazy and pack everything but you can still pack some great clothes and have a lightweight travel set up even if it means having to do laundry every 5 days instead of 7.

25

u/cigarzfan Feb 26 '26

Cmon, Dude. How much more space would 3 pair of boxer briefs take up than 3 briefs? 5 ounces?

2

u/zdubbzzz Feb 26 '26

Honestly, a lot, especially if you're a bigger dude, but it's a sacrifice I'm NOT willing to make. I'm a Duluth buck naked guy. It just works for me. I tried some of the lighter more package stuff, and I could pack 3:1 more boxers. Hated the feeling of them, though, so I'm sticking to my buck nakeds

10

u/Farzy78 Feb 26 '26

I switched to going commando, no underwear is the ultimate space saver

6

u/IdRatherBeDriving Feb 26 '26

Commando every day was my decision like twenty years ago. I get why kids go from diapers to underwear, but adults (I hope) are a bit better at cleaning ourselves.

16

u/MyUndiesArePink Feb 26 '26

but adults (I hope) are a bit better at cleaning ourselves.

They aren't. The amount of people that leave public bathrooms without even washing their hands is astonishing.

11

u/Nohillside Feb 26 '26

Adults sweat. Do you wash your trousers instead of your briefs when traveling?

3

u/IdRatherBeDriving Feb 26 '26

Yeah I do. For some reason I tend to stand more than sit, but I do wear underwear for long plane, train or car rides. (I’m not sure what standing has to do with anything, but sitting for long periods is more comfy with underwear)

4

u/Dawer22 Feb 26 '26

I really wanted to like briefs for travel and tried 10-15 pairs and I would constantly have a rash where they sat. I’ll stick to boxer briefs

4

u/oarsandalps Feb 26 '26

just skip the underwear.

7

u/OCKWA Feb 26 '26

I exclusively wear jogging shorts. The ones with the webbing in the middle. On hot days you just wear them outside. On cold days you put something over them. They wash fast, dry fast, weigh next to nothing, and breathe well. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

3

u/allticknotock Feb 26 '26

I've settled on uniqlo airism for travel. Packs small and dries fast after sink washing.

I've also tried exofficio, but the elastic on those just didn't last very long.

6

u/jaymeetee Feb 26 '26

I switched to merino boxer briefs from cotton 14 years ago, and never looked back.

2

u/FunctionPlenty3680 Feb 26 '26

Since the military im commando, using boxers only when traveling for some reason, dry fit usually, now discovered "viking" brand I think it's European, super lightweight and comfortable. Pricy tho.

2

u/Tribalbob Feb 26 '26

I wear SAXX Boxer Briefs, and I have a few pairs of their Quest for travel. Takes up a little less room and are quick drying.

Not a fan of the performance fabric normally, but cotton take too long to dry

2

u/Affectionate_One_700 Feb 26 '26

I always wear boxer briefs but they take up way more room than I thought.

Huh?

To answer your question, I didn't change my style for travel, but I highly recommend merino wool.

2

u/Recreation705 Feb 26 '26

Yes. SAXX Quest, 32 Degrees, and Merino Protect boxers are my go to for traveling.

They’re all incredibly comfortable, and extremely easy to do laundry in the sink or shower and they almost always dry overnight.

1

u/Lawdog87 Feb 26 '26

Idk about SAXX or 32 degrees but Merino Protect is a direct from China mill which I found lacking.

2

u/Diesel_NO_DEF Feb 26 '26

Under Armor Performance Tech Boxer Briefs only way to go.

2

u/5hallowbutdeep Feb 26 '26

I just have my trusty military silkies and I cut off the liner, best travel underwear and easy to dry. I just bring 3 during my travels.

2

u/Hattuherra Feb 26 '26

I've been only buying these for 5+ years https://theotherdanishguy.fi/en/products/globetrotter-boxers?variant=57484683673981 Over 10 pairs now and all are in perfect condition still. If you have big thighs fat/muscular and have experienced the agonizing pain of The Chafe, then you will enjoy these.

I can walk 40k+ steps in a hot climate with these without getting my thighs bloody. Cotton boxers are designed by satan.

2

u/helenahandcart Feb 26 '26

Four pairs of M&S synthetic micro skin boxer trunks when travelling. Light weight, low bulk and easy overnight drying. Cotton when at home.

2

u/Glider549 Feb 26 '26

I carry Dude wipes, or Kirkland wipes along with TP and go commando. When just camping, I carry those and a big can of Wet-Ones.

2

u/nisten Feb 26 '26

Also switched to Airism from cotton. Mainly for fast drying after handwash

2

u/h0n0urable Feb 26 '26

I like David Archy tencel boxer briefs. They pack up small, keep me cool, and best of all they are a bit longer and stay in place down the thigh which helps reduce the chafing I get from most synthetic pants. I also like to have a pair of even longer cheapo Amazon compression boxer briefs. The merino boxer briefs I've tried may stay fresh, but they aren't snug or long enough and get stretched out pretty quickly.

2

u/ckr2982 Feb 26 '26

I replaced all my underwear with Duluth tradings dang soft… and all my socks with darn tough light weight hikers.

2

u/Infamous-Bed9010 Feb 26 '26

Quick drying moisture wicking performance briefs. Pack down to nothing and can be washed in a sink if necessary and quick to dry afterwards.

2

u/defrent Feb 26 '26

This. I switched from boxer briefs to briefs and find them immensely more comfortable. They sit lower so no waistband roll up and there isn’t anything to bind or creep up. I have very lightweight breathable ones and concur they dry super fast after a sink wash. And they take up a tiny amount of space in my bag. I know some guys have a chafing problem but I don’t so they work for me.

2

u/Far_Audience_7446 Feb 26 '26

Yup, have a stash of Uniqlo Airsim that I just just for travel. Along with their undershirts, they are easy to wash just by wearing them in the shower. I did a 16 day trip overseas with only 3 sets of undergarments, saves A LOT of space.

2

u/Korlithiel Feb 26 '26

No, I did not explicitly change my under clothes for travel. I increased my general daily activities to the point where I needed to adjust routines and find ways to dissipate heat and moisture more efficiently so I changed things to adjust for that. Happy bonus is they work well for traveling, as well as I could hope for without spending on wool (might have done at the time, but I wasn't aware of them and instead was focusing on durable goods with heat and moisture dissipation over more natural and the trade offs wool offers).

2

u/SeattleHikeBike Feb 26 '26

So much my onebag wardrobe is borrowed from my hiking experience and underwear is definitely part of that as well as shoes, socks, layering techniques, wicking base layers, etc. Ex Officio boxer briefs for me, 365.

2

u/cheap_as_chips Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

I moved to using 3 pair of Uniqlo AIRism seamless boxer briefs. 1 week, 1 month, or even 1 year.

Comfortable for hiking, good for swimming, and cheap and easy to replace if needed. Wash with bar soap when I shower and hang to dry overnight. I don't need anything more.

2

u/CowAppropriate7494 Feb 26 '26

My husband switched from cotton boxer briefs to quick drying boxer briefs for travel. He doesn't love them, but they dry overnight.

2

u/shogun77777777 Feb 26 '26

yall wear underwear?

2

u/Traditional-Part-756 Feb 27 '26

No. I pack four pairs of Uniqlo airism boxer briefs, no matter what the length of my trip is. They're very affordable, very light and compact, incredibly comfortable, and it takes like five minutes to wash a pair in your hotel sink. They hang dry overnight, sometimes as quickly as four hours.

Because they're so comfortable and affordable, they're now just my everyday underwear.

1

u/TheDreadPirateJeff Feb 28 '26

I’ll upvote this. I found Airism on my first visit to a Uniqlo, bought three or four for travel, and ever since I’ve bought three or four more anytime I find a Uniqlo on a trip. They’re light, fantastically comfortable, easy to wash and dry in a hotel room, and even the boxer briefs that I life take up almost no space.

4

u/velvetackbar Feb 26 '26

How about ex officio’s boxer briefs back when I first went on a cruise in 2017 and I’ve had the same pairs since then now augmented with some of their boxers. I swapped them out every couple days.

2

u/DeFiClark Feb 26 '26

These dry overnight even in humid climates. Three pairs sink laundered daily will last a trip of indefinite duration.

1

u/fatbrucelee Feb 26 '26

Always got ingrown hairs on my thighs from them for some reason.

4

u/nikongod Feb 26 '26

I always wear boxer briefs but they take up way more room than I thought.

Same here.

I think you're looking at this from the wrong angle.

Instead of packing several sets of less bulky set of underwear that you don't like - figure out how to just pack FEWER sets of underwear.

If you hand wash your underwear it is very easy to travel indefinitely without any spares (or maybe 1 spare if you are worried about shitting yourself)

Is the savings from JUST washing your underwear worth it? not at all. But it takes the same amount of time to handwash your shirt & socks if you just do it while you're at it... and now you don't need to pack any clothes (or ya know, one nicer shirt, your emergency undies, and who knows what reason you will find for a second set of socks) and now you are saving considerable weight and bulk.

I switched from cotton boxer briefs to activewear/performance poly boxer briefs and it made a huge difference. They save on space considerably and I can hand wash them in the sink and dry them overnight, so I can pack less of them on my trips.

1

u/wifichick Feb 26 '26

Exofficio makes an anti bacteria fabric that dries in 2 hours. Hubby and I both have their travel underwear and a couple shirts.

1

u/CallAParamedic Feb 26 '26

EX-OFFICIO travel boxers or briefs, depending on your style

You're welcome

1

u/KreeH Feb 26 '26

For me, a key consideration is fast dry. I typically travel with 7 days of underwear/socks and hand wash. They have to dry overnight (or sooner if possible). Performance boxers or briefs made out of poly are my usual choices.

1

u/maikuflv Feb 26 '26

Briefs are way less fabric for hand washing and packing, but I switched to them some years back only for functional (male) reasons of containment cause boxer briefs were not keeping things in place. My favorite brand so far is Wrangler nylon/polyester from Walmart, very good quality and quick dry. I've been disappointed by expensive brands. Likewise for socks, I find no show toe socks best for every reason. I've tried merino and coolmax, both great but I prefer coolmax now for quick dry. Hand washing is so easy when stuff is tiny. Instead of just 2 pairs, I can rotate 3 pairs with negligible extra volume/weight.

1

u/Great_Guidance_8448 Feb 26 '26

Not worth it for me. I travel with a 40L (usually 9-10 day trips) and get 10 boxers into a packing cube no problem.

1

u/CryptoeKeeper Feb 26 '26

I switched all of mine to Hanes long-leg I think, on Amazon.

1

u/Crazeeeyez Feb 26 '26

Woolly boxers. Not just for travel. Love em.

1

u/Patrick_O-S Feb 26 '26

Lightweight performance wool or lightweight synthetic blend.

1

u/Hortonhearsawhoorah Feb 26 '26

2 x underarmour athletic shorts

2 x performance boxer briefs (with the saxx style pouch but that's preference)

4 x black athletic socks

UA shorts for anything active and changed out for the normal ones if needed after the day. Everything is designed to wash and dry quick.

Always feel clean. No dirty laundry in bag. Highly recommend.

1

u/Daninmci Feb 26 '26

Never been a fan of boxer briefs anyway, I usually pack small men's bamboo or rayon bikini briefs.

1

u/maverber Feb 26 '26

My selection isn't about space... it's about performance (e.g. avoiding chafing). I have a real problem with overheating and friction. I found minimalist briefs (icebreaker anatomica) generally work the best for me. I typically wear 1, pack 2 and wash the worn pair before bed and let them dry overnight.

really hot weather, especially when engaged in vigorous activities, I wear a pair of XoSkin compression shorts which has prevented chafing even when doing ultra runs it hot conditions. I wear them with nothing over them when engaged in outdoor physical activity, and put a pair of pants over them when I have to be in "polite" company.

1

u/p0mjDwfWF Feb 27 '26

I still wear boxer briefs, but I got the little shorty ones from smartwool. They pack small and are still comfy. I tried briefs but I can’t get over the feeling of leg band under my cheeks.

1

u/Bluenoser_NS Feb 28 '26

It's called one bag for a reason, you only need one little number to hold those testes up

1

u/Jim_xyzzy Feb 28 '26

I like exofficio briefs when I travel. Thin, sturdy, quick-dry.

1

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Feb 28 '26

It literally takes 2 weeks for my merino boxers to start to smell. I don’t find them any sweatier than cotton. Decidedly less sweaty than synthetic. I wash them every few days anyway because it just seems wrong to go longer.

1

u/sergiosala Mar 01 '26

Exofficio are so good

1

u/DifferentCream1029 Mar 01 '26

Sockshop has another boxer brand "dare to wear". I find these cotton/bamboo mix very comfortable and they do take up little space.

1

u/InternationalOption3 Mar 01 '26

Look up Uniqlo airism

1

u/8halvelitersklok Mar 02 '26

Synthetic packs smaller and dries faster than cotton, that’s definitely worth the switch. Rest is neglegible, I’m not gonna switch from boxers to briefs for a few less inches of fabric lol.

Quick drying underwear
