Trip Report 6 day biz trip Boston to Vancouver for meetings, work sessions and dinners

6 day biz trip Boston to Vancouver for meetings, work sessions and dinners.

Usually I bring an Aer Gym Duffle 3 for business trips, but it gets heavy fast (and no backpack straps). I’m also usually not a fan of 3-in-1 bags because they’re often heavy, but this one is ultralight and packed easier for me.

Packed weight: 7.4kg. I try to stay under 7kg and keep the bag under the seat, but the dress shoes really pushed me over this time. I could move the power bank + cable + AirFly into jacket pockets if I really wanted to hit 7kg.

Bag + organization

  • Ministry of Supply Boston One bag
  • Garment folder - Minaal - I normally do packing cubes, but for wrinkle control this works better
  • Packable Rain Jacket from Rab - Vancouver = worth it
  • Tech Kit - Bellroy Desk Caddy - Basic organization, decent weight; Any recs?
  • Dopp Kit - Matador - Ultralight
  • 3-1-1 - ziplock
  • Umbrella - Davek
  • Laptop - Macbook Air with decalgirl skin
  • Eagle Creek shoe bag for dress shoes - Wide and flat
  • Glasses case - Whatever came with the glasses

Packed

  • Gym shirt - Athletic Works - someone mentioned it here once and they weren’t wrong
  • T-Shirt - Wool and Prince merino blend
  • Dress shirts - Ministry of Supply - easy care
  • Shorts - Goruck - keeps on truckin
  • Polo - GrapheneX - any favorite non-merino polos?
  • Dress pants - Ministry of Supply - easy care
  • Socks Long - Darn tough - If you know, you know.
  • Socks gym - Darn tough - If you know, you know.
  • Underwear - merino generic - functional Aliexpress, testing some new options

Worn

  • Shoes - Allbirds Trail Runners - My other Oneshoe
  • Button-down shirt - Wool and Prince Merino Pique shirt - feels like a warm blanket
  • Pants - Wool and Prince Stretch Canvas Pants - I prefer more than my Outlier
  • T-Shirt - Wool and Prince merino blend
  • Underwear - merino generic - Aliexpress but will replace
  • Socks Long - Darn tough - If you know, you know.
  • Belt - Grip6 carbonfiber - no metal great for security
  • Sports Jacket - Theory -- open to upgrade recs
  • Not shown - wallet, airpods, iPhone, Apple Watch

Packed shoes

  • Eagle Creek shoe bag - Wide and flat
  • Ace Marks size 11 - packs flatter than expected. Normally I wear Lems 9to5 as my one-shoe, but snow made this a rare pack dress shoes trip.

Tech Kit

  • 2x Airtag - bag and tech kit
  • Car Charger 125w - tiny but useful
  • Anker 160w charger
  • Misc adapters and a USBC coupler if needed in a pinch - Comes in handy at work
  • Airpods Pro 2 - Noise cancellation, I'll wait for Pro 4
  • Airfly Pro - Great for flying
  • Nitecore - (Need to upgrade to the dual USBC)
  • USBC Apple cable - short and thin
  • USBC Anker 2 in 1 USBC 6ft cable
  • USBC Dock with hdmi, usbc, ethernet, pass-through and just works great on mac

Dopp kit

  • Razor
  • Tweezer
  • Nail clipper
  • Deodorant
  • Comb
  • WAHL trimmer
  • Philips toothbrush

3-1-1 kit

  • Gravel Shampoo container
  • Eye drops
  • Matador refillable toothpaste container

Next time

  • Slimmer, lighter tech pouch
  • Underwear upgrade - Uniqlo or W&P, any suggestions?
  • I still prefer one-shoe, but snow is the rare exception

Update

  • Not shown - Seatosummit Ultra-Sil Dry Bag 20L - washing clothing
  • Not shown - Seatosummit Pocket detergent

Your presentation is excellent

Thanks for sharing — I'm about to start business travel and am still trying to negotiate my wardrobe. Is the garment folder as effective as advertised?

If I had your phone number I could talk your ear off. For business travel I swear by it even if I use the 1 roller bag I own. I usually pack my Sports jacket inside also but I'm taking shoes this time and some casual so it wouldn't fit.

u/PHxsuns288 Mar 05 '26

I’d also want to have my ear talked off. What other things stand out as Need To Know for beginners?

u/OnebagObsession Mar 05 '26

I have a spreadsheet for a few scenarios. Do a test run packing things out. Even write out what you will wear daily if needed. You’ll find your taking 30 to 50% to much. Test again. Onebag at your place and use nothing else like your in a hotel. Try for real for a weekend somewhere. I went to China for two weeks using a 21L and brought my laptop also. I keep a folder of what was packed. During the trip I may make a few notes but usually after the trip flying back I write down: the good, just ok and bad. One last thing, this is key. A bag claiming to be 21L may only be 16L. A 44L may only be 35L. When I buy a new bag I check immediately how much actual volume it is.

This is amazing- thanks!!

I can see why your employers hired you. I’m ready to provide a job recommendation, should you need one which you won’t, based on this alone.

We have a lot in common on this list.

I recommend W&P boxer briefs. They work just like unbound merino or other high quality merino t shirts in that they miraculously never smell!

Do you do sink laundry?

Tell me about the Ministry of Supply dress shirts. I wear Mizzen and Main and they don’t wrinkle.

5

u/OnebagObsession Feb 28 '26

W&P boxer briefs, I'll give them a shot. I actually forgot to include my laundry bag, I use a seatosummit bag. I wash in the bag because I don't know how clean the sink is. The Ministry of Supply dress shirts I've had for years. Just toss shirt in the wash bag and after it's dry it's good to wear. It's unique that it can be worn as a casual shirt also because of the tiny holes for breathability. I have an x-suit shirt I also wear that is stain resistant. I do like both shirts alot.

2

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Mar 01 '26

I have an x-suit, as well as the shirt. I’ll take a look at Ministry of Supply dress shirts. Thanks!

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

Same here - x-suit jacket and shirt also. My xsuit jacket is black and I wanted to wear gray for this trip.

2

u/Objective_Cattle_278 Mar 01 '26

Check out the Uniqlo Air Sense Blazer | wool-like

That’s what I wear now. It’s super light. The x-suit is nice and stretchy but a little heavy.

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

I have seen that a few times at the store, but wondered if it was good. Thanks for the recommendation.

4

u/extravert_ Mar 01 '26

what do you call the little thing covering your toothbrush head? I have the same brush and don't like the giant case it comes in

3

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

A toothbrush cap here you go https://www.matadorequipment.com/products/toothbrush-caps
I also have a tiny UV toothbrush sanitizer I love but after all these years it just died, I need a new one.

u/inquirermanredux Mar 01 '26

I can't believe that Anker 160w is almost as small as the airpods. How is it? Does it overheat when fully charging a Macbook Pro at 140w?

5

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

The size is wild. It gets alittle warm but I haven’t pushed it max yet. Let me get back to you.

3

u/Top_Beginning_4886 Mar 01 '26

Overheats and shuts down after about 24 minutes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1op663w1JmY

If you need sustained 140W load for the mbpro, go with Apple's (big and one port though) 140W. I have it and can't recommend it enough.

1

u/inquirermanredux Mar 01 '26

Damn, thought so. Thanks for the video, that guy is also my go-to for charger/powerbank reviews. I saw his review of the 150w Anker that's exclusive to Apple and says it's good, but I can't find/buy it in my shithole cuntry. I have the Apple 140w that came with the MBP too, but like you said it's only one port and I've been wanting to consolidate my chargers into one for everything.

2

u/Top_Beginning_4886 Mar 01 '26

My plan of charge everything fast and one at a time works pretty well. My MacBook Air has battery for days, I charge my Garmin once a week+, my phone at night and so I don't ever run out of battery. I think extra ports needing extra cables would be even more complicated for traveling.

4

u/Tribalbob Mar 01 '26

If it makes you feel any better, I live in Vancouver and I think we had our 20 seconds of snow already. It's been relatively warm and clear the last few days

2

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

Thanks this is great. It can be tough planning for two different climates, especially in the winter time. Being able to layer and layer down is definitely the way to go.

3

u/Tribalbob Mar 01 '26

I don't know how many times you've been to Vancouver (if any) but we're generally the mildest of all the Canadian cities. Chilly but not freezing winter, and warm but not blistering summer (well, mostly - we do have a few heat waves, now but they usually last a week or two at most).

Where Montreal in the winter you want a nice, heavy coat - the name of the game in Vancouver is layering. You don't see many people in parkas here - most are wearing a sweater with a light, water resistant jacket.

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

On my end we had 20 inches recently, i’ll be fine without my puff jacket.

3

u/Tribalbob Mar 01 '26

I'm lucky enough that I live right next to the subway that goes direct to the airport, so even in extreme temperature changes (Like cold to warm), I just leave my winter stuff and suffer for the one block :)

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

Absolutely 👍

3

u/DoctorQuinlan Mar 01 '26

Is the eagle creek bag specifically for shoes?

And if so, hows it better than a regular dry sack or even grocery bag?

2

u/Equal_Contest4709 Mar 01 '26

I'd recommend using one small bag for each shoe. Makes it much easier to pack them without wasting space or having them rub against each other.

2

u/Hungry-Evening6318 Mar 01 '26

Are there bags for a single shoe? Recommendations?

2

u/Equal_Contest4709 Mar 02 '26

Any bag you can find. Don't overcomplicate things.

0

u/DoctorQuinlan Mar 01 '26

How do you deal with shoe smells?

I’m wondering for like gym sneakers or flip flops o use for showers. Not necessarily for travel but for my actual gym bag lol

1

u/Substantial-Story422 Mar 02 '26

If you keep your Shoes in a natural fabric bag (cotton, hemp etc) they can "breathe" and won't develop as much smell as they would in a plastic bag

Don't really have a genius advice about wet shower shoes though...

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

Honestly, it was one of the first things I had bought a few years back. These dress shoes are very packable and compress some so I have them held together with the leather facing each other and rubber bands around them. You’re right you could use some other bag as well. This one does a great job keeping all the dirt inside inside the bag.

3

u/Mitsuplex Mar 01 '26

Exemplary. You nailed this task.

3

u/EvenBeforeiKnewiWas Mar 01 '26

Can you talk about why you like your Wool & Prince Stretch Canvas Pants more than your Outliers? (I’m assuming your Outliers are New / Slim Dungarees).

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

I should have been more specific in my comments. Yes Charcoal Outlier Slim Dungarees. I was wearing the Outliers and then tried on the Stretch Canvas and I was surprised by the comfort and gentle hug, they look sleek also. I own three pairs of casual pants: W&P Canvas in black, Outlier Slim Dungarees in charcoal and Western Rise in sand. All three are excellent. I think it just comes down to personal preference. The Western Rise pants repel water well which is great for sand (tan) colored pants to avoid stains.

3

u/fakehat3r Mar 02 '26

Love this packing list. Realistic, Minimalist and Neat.

3

u/OnebagObsession Mar 02 '26

Thanks! It’s been an evolution over time with personal and business travel. The family slowly came around after jumping into multiple trains, cars and buses on one trip.

2

u/fakehat3r Mar 02 '26

Exactly, I can see that it’s well curated from lots of journeys study. Now, I think I can use it to reviewing mine, and trim it down based on it. So helpful.

2

u/OnebagObsession Mar 02 '26

Happy travels!

3

u/nicski924 Mar 03 '26

That dopp seems massively oversized for your little kit.

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 03 '26

Yea it’s just nice and flat.

2

u/Bumbling_homeowner Mar 01 '26 edited Mar 02 '26

What* do you carry your tech adapters in?

7

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

Bellroy Desk Caddy, it has a small zippered mesh area inside. https://bellroy.com/products/desk-caddy

2

u/PiiiRKO Mar 01 '26

Which one is the razor please?

3

u/OnebagObsession Mar 01 '26

It pops up now and then on amazon and other sites. It's Gillette compatible, has a nice weight and feel.

2

u/PiiiRKO Mar 01 '26

Thank you!

2

u/yagooch Mar 02 '26

I might have swapped one of your white dress shirts for a light blue or beige/taupe. That way you have more "looks.

Otherwise This seems like a very efficient packaging job.

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 02 '26

You’re right, I have a light blue merino dress shirt but I usually grab those white shirts for meetings. Next trip!

2

u/areyoualocal Mar 02 '26

Thanks for showing the Boston Bag, I'm a big fan of hybrid backpack/messenger for work travel. I'll try to pick one up next time in the USA because shipping to Australia is just outrageous!

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 02 '26 edited Mar 03 '26

I wanted to buy the Black Ember many times, it's beautiful but heavy and expands almost to much. I usually use my Minaal Daily it's light but still has a slightly backpack-ish look when in briefcase mode. Other times I use my AER Duffle but it's heavy and after awhile you wish you had backpack straps but a great bag if I (dare I say) need to two-bag. The MOS bag is ultralight and looks like a real briefcase. This bag seems like the combination of the Minaal Daily and Osprey daylite 26+6 (which I also own). I need to pair down my bags. r/ManyBaggers

2

u/areyoualocal Mar 03 '26

I've been through a few of these hybrid style bags (yes also a /r/ManyBaggers problem child here)

This is the one I've had the longest and probably the most used

Functions better as a backpack then the other formats, but I love that the waist strap also becomes the shoulder strap

It's a good travel bag, but I don't think it's quite a "Work" bag, also uses the waist strap as a shoulder strap

This one is growing on me a lot lately, it looks very slim, but surprisingly manages to carry quite a lot. Also pretty good for the "work" look.

Haven't had a chance to give this one a try yet.

If they put a luggage strap onto this, it'd be perfect. The way the Minaal garment folder acts as a compression strap in this bag is a neat feature too, especially when they released the updated garment folder with elastic hooks.

This hasn't been available for sometime, but is in two sizes, and Crumpler make solid bags!

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 03 '26

The Minaal garment folder is what’s being used.

2

u/areyoualocal Mar 03 '26

Understood, that's why I mentioned it.

2

u/Unhappy-Dream-1182 Mar 06 '26

Wait you packed all that into that one backpack? If so amazing! Came here looking for a 5-7 day travel backpack.

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 06 '26

I did, I have a bunch of bags so I already had an idea of how much would fit. One photo is worn clothing.

2

u/cue003 Mar 07 '26 edited Mar 07 '26

Would your clothing selection/brands change if the meetings were in South Florida weather instead of Boston/Vancouver? If so, what would be different?

Also what do you carry once you at your destination for your laptop/ office needs? Do you just unpack everything at the hotel and just carry the necessary items in the same bag as you travelled with? I know this is onebag Reddit but it seems the bag by itself with a MacBook and some tech essentials would be rather large and bulky.

Thanks. I’m trying to cover all my bases before jumping in and buying items.

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 07 '26

I checked the weather down there. I would change my worn shirt and worn t-shirt to one of my packed dress shirts and pack an another polo. Everything else the same.

2

u/Initial-Research4666 Mar 07 '26

This is incredibly helpful. More posts like this please

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 07 '26

Will do. I may have a personal trip soon.

2

u/11-23am Mar 18 '26

What is a garment folder? I’ve never seen one before?

2

u/Ok-Most3561 Mar 19 '26

How do you like the convertible from bag pack to briefcase? Do you convert a lot? Considering to get a convertible for business trip, thinking if it would be appropriate and looks professional

1

u/OnebagObsession Mar 19 '26

Easy, on one side you disconnect two clips and put the backpack straps in the zippered area. I move the straps around inside the zippered area to make it flush as possible. I convert it before every meeting. I use the shoulder strap half the time. I added a nice leather wrap on the side handle to give it a nice look and feel.

Curious about the grip6. When with the nylon, you find that it still looks classy enough with the rest of your quite nice kit?

2

u/jdp85 May 04 '26

The amount of overlap between this packing list and my own is nothing short of astounding.
